Mdhurt2 | 7 comments Don't remember much about this adventure book for children.
A child (boy?) is at grandmother's house. At one point in the beginning a barometer and possibly weathervane are talking to each other. Flying horse appears. Talking cat. Child goes on adventure to magical land with horse and cat. At one point there are the four winds (north, south, east and west) talking/ arguing. Possibly a princess towards the end.
I read it in mid to late 90's. my grandmother got it for me from the local library. Actually she checked out the audio cassette version.
I remember the cover of the audio version had the child riding the winged horse and the cat was also on the horse.
Please help!

Bonnie Bess the weathervane horse by Alvin Tresselt?

Maybe not??

bookel | 4027 comments Or a chapter book? http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13...

The winged Colt of Casa Mia by Betsy Byars.
Edit: after checking the Kirkus review, not enough fantasy in that so my guess is no.

message 5: by Mdhurt2 (new)

Mdhurt2 | 7 comments Neither of those. The weather instruments had a small part in the beginning. I don't remember them interacting with the child but only commentators of the mystical happenings unfolding in the house as the cat began to talk, winged horse shows up, ect.

It was a chapter book.

Cheryl (cherylllr) dang, when you mention the cat riding the horse, I can see the image as clearly as if I'm remembering a book I've read.. but I'm still stumped.... This one sounds like a good candidate for Listopia, key words Flying HOrse, Pegasus, etc.

Mdhurt2 | 7 comments Could you explain how I'd used Listopia? I'm new to
Goodreads

message 8: by bookel (new)

bookel | 4027 comments It's not Lyrico by the way, that has a girl main character. This should be findable with more searching. I'll check later.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Sure. See the 'Explore' tab up top, near the right? Click. Listopia is the second link. Click. Near where your mouse should still be, there's a search box. Type a keyword, look at the results. If you don't like the results, try a different keyword, or another one together with the first.

The most useful Listopias for the purposes of this group are the ones created by members. For example, if it turns out you find no list for Flying Horses, you could create a list using all the books suggested in this thread.

Btw, my instructions are for use on a PC. I have no idea if they apply to mobile devices or apps.

I strongly suggest that if a list already exists for a topic, such as Flying Horses, that new ones not be created, but the original one(s) added to. It helps if lists aim for comprehensiveness. (GR also asks that users do this, search to see if the list you are creating already exists.)

Many people ignore this suggestion and that's why we have 500 lists for YA Science Fiction, YA Fantasy, Books set in India, etc.

bookel | 4027 comments I've been browsing WorldCat
Search results for 'su:horses fantasy' > '1950..1999' > 'Book' > 'Fiction' > 'English' > 'Juvenile'
second page suddenly came across this, and the Amazon review sounds promising.

The island of the grass king : the further adventures of Anatole
by Nancy Willard; David McPhail
Book : Fiction : Juvenile audience
Language: English
Publisher: New York : Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, ©1979.
Anatole embarks on a fantastical journey to the island where the wild fennel grows.

"Plumpet, the cat, could talk, and that Suzanna was made of glass. I think that the book is great also, because Anatole goes on the journey to the Island of Sychorax so his grandma can get rid of her asthma."

And the cover image looks to be of a flying horse ... and there's a cat, too!

The trilogy:

Anatole Trilogy
1. Sailing to Cythera : And Other Anatole Stories
2. The Island of the Grass King
3. Uncle Terrible

Mdhurt2 | 7 comments This Island of the Grass King could very well be it. I'm not certain but the idea of getting the special herb to treat asthma and the girl/ princess made of glass struck a cord as vaguely familiar. I am not 100% but its a 50/50 shot this could be the one. I'm going to buy it on amazon and see when it arrives.

bookel | 4027 comments You should be able to look at quotes via Google books search inside feature. I'm sure I saw things in context about weather and winds. Sounds like the book to me.

message 14: by Mdhurt2 (new)

Mdhurt2 | 7 comments I googled it in google books and only got 3 short snippets. That was all they had of the book. None sounded familiar but it didn't turn me off to the idea. It's only $5 with shipping on amazon. Even if its not the book, I'll have that one to read as well.

Krazykiwi | 152 comments If Island of the Grass King is book 2, is it possible you read one of the other two of the series?

message 16: by Mdhurt2 (new)

Mdhurt2 | 7 comments Oh wait... I see now on Google Books where you can click on the contact words. I'm like 99% sure this is the book because when I clicked on North Wind it came up with segments of the book where the four winds are talking and doing stuff like personification. Unless another book with a talking cat, winged horse and a boy staying with grandmother also has winds personified this is it!

message 17: by bookel (new)

bookel | 4027 comments If you put the title in quotes into Google Images you can see three different covers. If your memory wasn't triggered by
the front on view then perhaps the side on view of the horse, boy and cat will.

Mdhurt2 | 7 comments Yay! That's it!!!! This is the cover image I remembered from the Audio Cassette version! This is 110% it!!!!!

Cheryl (cherylllr) Congrats! As I was entering this book to the group shelves, I noticed that it has already been the answer to someone's quest - but they remembered girl of glass and golden whistle... interesting...
