Nicola | 770 comments I've started Cranford, which is about women behaving so correctly it's terrible and Bel-Ami which is about a bad man behaving so incorrectly it's likewise.

message 2112: by Dree (new)

Dree | 160 comments I started The Blind Owl, and am struggling to get through the introduction. I often skip intros to American and British novels because I have read widely from those countries, know a fair amount of history, etc. I know very little about Iran and Persian history and nothing of this author, but UGH this intro is pretentious, exhausting, and long. Th book itself has got to be better.

I never read intro's myself, at least not at the start of the book. The number of times I've seen spoilers in them... Especially for other books. I guess they don't think it counts if they blurt out crucial plot points for other novels the author has written if it isn't actually the one you are currently holding.

Excellent book, but I do wonder why it's on the list. But you won't be sorry to read it.

message 2146: by Dree (new)

message 2147: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Dree - why are you struggling? I haven't read it yet, am interested what makes it difficult for you.

message 2148: by Dree (new)

Dree | 160 comments It is overly descriptive yet nothing happens. An entire page about drawing a hopscotch game and then jumping through. One person going one time. YAWN!

Nicola | 770 comments Dree wrote: "It is overly descriptive yet nothing happens. An entire page about drawing a hopscotch game and then jumping through. One person going one time. YAWN!"

Yes it left me cold. Great writing, but it bored the socks off of me.

Nicola | 770 comments Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ - The first section with the 3 wise men was a trial but it's improved a little now we are past that very tedious introduction.

I'm also finally reading Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy after putting it off for about a year.
