Was anyone else disappointed in the ending?

I enjoyed reading this book until I got to the ending. It was one of the most ridiculous endings I have read in quite some time. I was truly disappointed after following such a good plot.

I can't say I was disappointed in the ending because I truly could not decide who I disliked more- Nick or Amy. In my opinion, the ending had to be as such because both characters were pretty messed up and actually belonged together in many ways. Great read regardless!

I feel like it was an appropriate ending to the book. It was different. Every one expected Nick to some how get the best of Amy in the end. But that didn't happen. I think people are upset with the ending because "good" did not prevail over "evil."

I was disappointed in the ending. To bad for Nick. I was kind of pissed when I finished the book.

Flynn deserves high marks only for devising the format and weaving a lot of intricate details that resulted in a compelling mystery. But no resolution to all that happens in the story - no justice, no growth, no learning - was a real disappointment when so much of the work that went into this book was otherwise brilliant.

Going to be honest, I loved the ending so much. I got like a literal rush of adrenaline when I finished and was raving to my friends on how awesome it was. It felt fitting for the characters since they're both so manipulative and untrustworthy and the ending didn't feel that bizarre given that fact.

Loved the book and read it voraciously. Was very disappointed by the ending.

I thought the ending was perfect as they both got what they deserved - - each other.

I think the ending was a non-ending. It didn't wrap everything up in a neat little package. It left you wondering. Artistically, it was probably the best ending the author could have written. But it just wasn't satisfying in my opinion.

I think this book is over-rated. I thought it was predictable and poorly written. I don't get what people like about it.

Yeah, I found the ending believable. But I didn't like it,and hopefully they save up not for college but therapy for the unborn child. I've known too many people who stay in abusive situations because they have "feelings" for the other person, even if that feeling can't possibly be anything but fear and revulsion. They're ( Nick and Amy) both just sick enough to call it love.

I was alright with the end when I thought the trilogy was all about Nick and Amy, but when I saw the next one isn't, I feel a little deflated by it. If there was a continuation of their story, where she does something else, that would be fantastic, but now I know there isn't I think it could have been better. Having said that, I can't think of anything, so if anyone has any ideas... Lol xxxx

The ending seemed to escalate rather than wrap up, so it definitely felt different in terms of a typical ending to a story.

No. I think the ending was the point of the book. The entire book was written so that Amy would prevail.

The ending freaking terrified me. I would've liked Amy to be put in an insane asylum because that's where she belongs but I think the ending the way Gillian Flynn wrote it is much more poignant. I don't even know if I used that word write. That's what I get when I try to use fancy words >_<

Thoroughly enjoyed the book with all of its twists and turns but the ending took me by surprise. That was the biggest twist of all in my opinion. I hoped nick would be the better man and walk away but maybe they do deserve each other, considering how they treated each other.

I agree. I really enjoyed the twists and turns throughout the book, but the ending was flat and anti-climatic.

To me the ending was a great surprise - actually the whole book was a pretty good surprise. Nick made me angry, especially with the whole affair situation, and I have to tell you I was starting to suspect that maybe he had something to do with Amy's dissapearance, so it was a shock when I found out Amy actually plotted the whole damn thing - it was the time Nick became "the good guy" again and I, used to fairness and what not, demanded justice. But Nick is not perfect and, in a way, Amy was right about some of her critics. So we have two hugely flawed characters, who are, put simply, stuck with each other. Some of us expected "justice" to be made, but Nick saw things as chosing between a bad thing and a bad thing - life isn't always "happily ever after" or even "the good will prevail", and seeing that portrayed in a book was actually kind of refreshing.

I agree with those that liked the ending. I did as well. It was as perfectly twisted as the rest of the book!

Yes, very disappointed. I thought with all the detail and description with the rest of the story that the end would follow suit. It felt very abrupt.

I don't get why everyone makes such a big deal about the ending. Nick needs her money to keep the bar. She'll ruin him if he leaves. She's obsessed with looking perfect at all costs. His big storm out the door would have been anti-climatic. Where was he going to go?

Huge let down!

The ending pissed me off to no end. I have been disappointed in endings before but never have an ending pissed me off! I still get all worked up when I think about this book.

I actually like the ending. I don't know if I'm the only one that read something sinister into Amy's final thoughts in the book. I was thinking maybe Nick should watch his back because I think he made Amy a little mad, and that would not be a good thing. So, I thought it was rather a chilling end.

Totally lame ending. The last chapter was completely dissatisfying. After all the detail and intricate plotting, it felt as if Flynn just rushed through the last chapter. This book deserved better,

I agree that having Amy end up in a mental institution or going to prison would be a little too predictable, but the fact that the she killed someone and wasn't even arrested for it made the story unbelievable and I found myself longing for the cliche ending.

This entire book as been about details. Details discussed and brought back up later, and we just brush past the fact that instead of running away when she got "free" from Desi, she takes the time to kill him first. We get one mention in the book that the police feel stupid for spending so much energy on Nick, but in the real world, Amy would have been arrested. She may have had charges dropped, but she admitted to killing someone and that warrants arrest.

But the book couldn't have ended the way she wanted it to with Amy getting pregnant and pulling the wool over Nick's eyes one last and final time, if Amy would have been in jail and possibly charged with manslaughter (which in court she would argue extreme emotional distress and be found not guilty).

I just feel a little cheated out of an ending that was up to par with the rest of the book.

I kind of was disappointed with the ending. Honestly it's an average story. I specifically hated the character of Amy.

I fully agree. I wanted to like this book, and the ending, but it just didn't do it for me. I said to myself, "This can't be the ending...it doesn't even make sense. NO ONE would stay with someone like that, whatever the consequences were." It just didn't seem believable to me. I am not one for always having a happy or satisfying ending, as I don't believe those endings are satisfying because they aren't true to life...but this ending just seemed, very strange. I didn't buy it, which made the rest of the book, which was quite entertaining, seem a little less interesting.

I think about this kind of thing whenever I write a book and I am working on the ending. There is a fine line between doing what you want (or can) and giving the audience what they want and expect. I don't always think the audience should get what they want, but the ending has to at least make sense to some degree.

I was somewhat disappointed by the ending also. But I guess that as she built us up to both love and hate Nick and Amy in equal but vacillating measures throughout the story, both of them - by getting each other - got what they deserved!

I was not diapointed in the ending,I thought, considering the both characters and what they were like. They deserved the ending to be together. And don't forget, maybe Gillian Flynn is coming out with a #2 book to carry on:)I loved this book!!It was the best book I read in 2012!And I have also read her other 2 books as well.I still prefer Gone Girl.

In hindsight I felt the ending was out of character. Nick is anything but a 'right to lifer'; he's totally selfish & it wouldn't have bothered him a bit if Amy had an abortion. But if she had the baby - can you see Amy as a single parent tho'? - he could have sued for sole custody on the grounds that Amy is a psychotic & an unfit mother.

Filming starts this week for the movie and Ben Affleck is in it :) yummy.

Yes disappointed

He could have used the sperm bank to nail her, but he stayed with her because she was carrying his baby. I'm surprised they didn't think to check where Desi was when he supposedly kidnapped her. They didn't think about that. She had no idea what Desi was up to before she called him to help her. I would have preferred the ending if they'd have caught her out. The book tried to be too clever for my liking but it was a fun read.

The book was very good, until the end. Sometimes I think writers just run out of juice and want to "get it over with". I happen upon crappy written endings often! Very aggravating, makes you want to never read another story by that particular author.

Gone Girl is my local library book club's Oct 2013 choice. I can't say that I liked any of the characters, but I was disappointed in the ending anyway, until I realized that I've met people like them and it often ends up that way--they continue on their foolish journey together, addicted to each other. It also felt like a setup for continuing with another saga.

My comment at the end: WTF, is that it?!?

I was SO disappointed in th ending. I was enjoying the book throughout, but the ending left me me really angry. I suppose that is the sign of excellent writing when the reader has a strong reaction either way, butnid rather be satisfied with the ending.

i really didnt care for this book but I want to reread it again and give it a second chance.

I hated the ending. He derved so much better than amy, I agree with rachel and just wanted to scream while reading ending,

I couldn't wait to read this book and then I was so disappointed in it. I think the Authors writing was very good, the story had me from the beginning but the ending was terrible.

They deserved each other.

I give it this, I didn't see THAT coming! I liked it because I was shocked and it doesn't sit well with me. I didn't like it because it doesn't sit well with me...

I admire that the author didn't try to make it a happy ending. As previous posters had said, they did kind of deserve each other.

I disliked the entire book, including the ending. The only reason I finished it was because I kept expecting it to get better. It got such raves, surely there had to be SOME redeeming quality to the book! Sadly, no. There was absolutely nothing likeable about it.

Gillian Flynn is has a flair for writing characters who the audience loves to hate. In Sharp Objects it’s Amma, in ‘Dark Places’ it’s Diondra and finally, Amy grabs the reader’s attention in ‘Gone Girl’.

Flynn’s talent grows with each installment of her published works, but in ‘Gone Girl’ I felt like the last chapter had yet to be written

Mutual suicide pact, that's all I have to say.

Talk about anti-climatic. I still loved the book. Maybe Flynn wrote it that way to get people talking?

I was infuriated throughout the whole book! I could not put it down, but I was torn with the ending. On the one hand they deserve each other, but on the other hand I feel sorry for the fictional child...

My gripe was the unbelievable bit where she escapes (don't want to ruin this for others :)) . It did not ring true and was a keystone in the subsequent plot.

I have to agree. It took long enough for the book to even get good and then the completely destroyed the book. Everyone hypes this book up to be one of the best new reads, but I completely disagree. The only good part was the mid section.

I figured out the ending within the first few chapters (right after being told about the scavenger hunts). I read the last bit, found out I was right, and was just disappointed. I'd heard so many good things too!

I agree! Was very disappointed with the ending...after all the hype over this book I expected more. I actually like her other two books better.
