I think that was the point. There are people in this world who refuse to learn or grow. Unfortunately, all too often they get away with their actions. I was impressed with the twists and turns of this book-my allegiance went from one character to the other and back, before realizing that they were both pretty wicked. They have each other caught in a perfect chinese puzzle.
I think that it is super honest in this respect. How often do issues in our lives (personality defects, f-ed up relationships, etc.) really get resolved? The ending to the book is that there is no ending. Nick and Amy will live the next 18 years in perpetual mistrust and competition for power in the relationship. There is no resolution because what real resolutions do we have in life?
