Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) Heather, just click on this link:

And then you can make your own ticker. And then it shows you the steps from there. A lot of us used it in TNBBC Spring Challenge.

I just finished task 30.1. I read I Am the Messenger and Kira-Kira. They were both good books. I don't know if I really can say if they deserved their awards, not knowing the competition. I enjoyed reading both of them, but I can't say they really knocked my socks off, either. I liked the originality of Messenger and I enjoyed Kira-Kira because it was a different time and place than I would have pictured setting that story, so I guess they were both unique. Have others read them? What do you think?

message 453: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassielo) I have another question about the challenge. I am actually just reading books as I normally would and then seeing if they fit into the challenge (except, of course, for the challenges that specify how a book is chosen, like the library one).

My question is about the challenge for the three genres. If I feel like a book is action/adventure, but the book has a thread in fantasy, can I still call it action/adventure to fit the challenge since I'm using a different book for fantasy that is definitely not action/adventure?

The book, by the way, is The Titan's Curse. I've always considered the Percy Jackson series to be action/adventure and fantasy.

message 454: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments It's a tough call when a book can be easily placed in more than one genre. "Adventure" is a classic part of many fantasy novels - the protagonist going on a dangerous journey to accomplish a certain mission. This Wikipedia article on adventure novels lists several well-known fantasy and science fiction authors in the adventure category. But then those books are definitely fantasy and/or science fiction as well as adventure. I'm glad our moderators are the ones who get to make these tough decisions for the challenge!

message 455: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hi C, I agree with Fiona on this, although it's a tough call. I see adventure as something real, while fantasy can have many of the same aspects with magical or unreal characters.

message 456: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassielo) Thanks, guys, I've fit it in somewhere else :)

message 457: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Good C, because I hate to somehow discourage reading in any form. Maybe we can put a smile on your froggy face!

:)

message 458: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 274 comments Just got to thinking I should have posted this portion of my report here instead of with my points report:

For task 20.1, I first watched the classic Romeo and Juliet film directed by Franco Zeffirelli, which I haven't seen since high school, and then reread Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which I also haven't read since high school. I thought the film did a great job of making the story accessible and very understandable. I'm sure what they showed us in high school was an edited version because I don't remember that much skin in the bedroom scene! Also, the film did cut out much more of the play than I originally realized - even the deaths of several characters. I like being able to experience Shakespeare's words both ways - reading them myself (sometimes aloud) and in the film. I would love to now go see a production of the play! I also want to re-watch West Side Story and Romeo + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments Quick question- I am reading (just finished actually...) The Chronicles of Narnia books. I haven't posted them as points yet, because I was waiting to finish them all first...

In the Fantasy section, they are all listed as The Chronicles of Narnia. Can I use just one book for my post to a discussion task? Or, would I have to use all 7 for that one task?
Thanks in advance!

message 460: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) They were all originally published as separate books, so if you read any of them you can use it for that task. The thread is just titled that as it encompasses all of the books. :)

message 461: by Becky (last edited May 20, 2009 11:47PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) There was actually a discussion a while back as to how many of the Narnia books could be fit into the challenge... You could see if you can find that if you just finished all of them, to see if you could use the other books somewhere as well. It is in this thread, but I'm not sure exactly how long ago.

message 462: by K.S.R. (last edited May 21, 2009 05:25AM) (new)

K.S.R. (kareyshane) | 77 comments I don't know why, but this challenge thing is way too hard for my brain. I must not be a numbers person. Wait, I know I'm not. And understanding numbered directions is like staring at a newspaper written in Farsi. Sigh.

message 463: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 468 comments Becky, the Narnia discussion was with me before too. I have a way to fit all of them in right now, but wanted to make sure that doing one individually would be ok to discuss. Just double checking. Thanks for the response!

message 464: by Kandice (new)

Kandice As far as figuring out points...I'm lost too. I didn't even make my own list (loser) Becky did it for me. I'm just crossing off as I read and will worry about the points later.

message 465: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I am not a loser! ;D

Ashley, I'm sorry that I didn't remember it was you that I talked about the Narnia books with! There are so many people, and I have just unofficially taken it upon myself to help answer questions! LOL

message 466: by Kandice (new)

Kandice No, no, no I AM THE LOSER because I couldn't make my own list. Please tell me you really knew that.

message 467: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I did. ;) I was just giving you a hard time. And you are not a loser either.

message 468: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I AM a challenge list making loser;) You, however, are Billion Book Becky the Bomb!!!!!

message 469: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *rolls eyes* If you say so...

message 470: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Watch out, they may get stuck that way. Didn't your mom tell you?

message 471: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Nope. I'm not crossing them, I'm just rolling them in my exasperation at your insistence that you are a loser. Because you are not.

message 474: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hi Rui, it's nice to have you here, but please don't push your blog in every post you make, because that is annoying and our members don't enjoy that kind of interaction.

If you want to discuss YA books, we would love to have you. But if you just want to push your blog, we will delete you.

Sorry, but I've seen your blog pushed in the last three threads I've been in and it's getting to be a bit much.

message 475: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok Sorry I was just introducing myself ...first posts

By the way: the book "wind by the windmils" is about what?

message 476: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) You can type any book title in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and it will locate a list of books with that name and similar names. If you click on the book you want, you can find a description there of what the book is about so you can decide if you want to read it.

message 477: by [deleted user] (new)

ok in the upper LEFT-hand corner of the (my) screen

I just finished The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen for task 20.4 and I liked it. I generally like Sarah Dessen's books and I've read two of hers this year alone (and I have one more that I took out from the library), but I liked the other one I read this year, Keeping the Moon, a little bit more. I can't really explain why. Maybe it's because I liked the characters in Keeping the Moon, more than the ones in The Truth About Forever, though I liked those fine. I don't know....

I love the Dresden series but did you find Fool Moon in YA?

I have heard great things about The Mysterious Benedict Society. I'll have to pick that up eventually.

message 488: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I was just wondering: Are any of you who have participated in Cynthia's challenges bowing out this next round? There are a lot of fun tasks, but there are so many of them that I think I will focus on the challenge here and read some of the other books I've been meaning to read but can't fit in. I really love the managable challenge we've got here - it's fun and low stress! I haven't read a non-challenge book since I started participating, I think, and I'd like to just be able to pick up a book on a whim once in a while!

message 489: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I am still planning on participating in the Summer challenge... There are quite a few tasks that I am really looking forward to. Especially the movie task (the one where you read a book that has not been made into a movie and cast it yourself. That one sounds like fun!)

message 490: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Becky wrote: "I am still planning on participating in the Summer challenge... There are quite a few tasks that I am really looking forward to. Especially the movie task (the one where you read a book that has no..."

That was my favorite one, too. I'm thinking I may just read what I want to and then see how my books fit in, but I don't want to get obsessive this time about finishing it or even reaching a certain goal. It never really works out for me, since there's always something that pops up that prevents me from reading as much as I'd planned.

message 491: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I am thinking of doing the same thing... I didn't finish (am not going to finish) my set goal for the Spring challenge, so I might be a little more lenient with myself for Summer.

message 492: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'm definitely psyched for the summer challenge from Cynthia. I made sure my challenge was all about YA. :) I'm trying to fit in books from this summer challenge into that one. Sometimes tricky. I really enjoyed it this last time around because I read some books I never would have picked up otherwise. I did read outside the challenge and still finished early.

message 493: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) I am doing the same thing Kristen. I never finish Cynthia's challenge but I do try to do better than the last one, unfortunatly this time around I just plain sucked at it. LOL
This time I put as many YA from my list here to match up on her list there. We will see what happens. :~)
I really need to read more and get off this darn computer. LOL

message 494: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I know what you mean. I sometimes listen to an audiobook when I'm doing less tedious work online.

message 495: by Leora (new)

Leora I am glad you made your 25 pointer about YA Kristen! Makes it easier to overlap the books for both challenges. The summer one will be fun!

message 496: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Hehe, that's what I was thinking too ;).

message 497: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Kristen, I saw that too, and I restrained myself from telling you to run from the lynch-mob! TWO TNBBC Official challenges with high point level, multiple-book YA tasks? I felt sure that you'd be boycotted!! LOL

But we appreciate you here! :D

message 498: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Lol. Yeah, I actually wanted to do three YA books that had to be from different series, but Cynthia said it was too much (esp. for people who hate YA) and so I went with three reg. YA books. They'll either buck up and read three YA books.. which really - if they're old fogies, they can reread old classic books they read as a kid.. or they'll skip my challenge. :)
