Cameron Byron Where any of the characters in this book based on people you know/used to know? Because I felt that, in-particular, Krystal, might have been based by someone you knew at school.

Sarah Jacqueline wrote: "I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, obsessed really and I loved Casual Vacancy. I am wondering how you felt with the critism from HP fans and others because of the language and story line?"

* Good questions for the author. I am a huge JK Rowlings -HP fan. I did purchase The Casual Vacancy- and within a few pages- had to return it. I truly appreciated her cleverness and language use in Harry Potter. When people curse- it just shows a lack of respect to all those around them. That's just how I felt. I didn't want to read anything more of the book.

message 1503: by RJD (new)

RJD Cao After the huge impact of the Harry Potter series and the success of Casual Vacancy, what would you like to write about next? Will Casual Vacancy have another book related to it?

message 1504: by Ellie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ellie The Casual Vacancy is a beautiful work of art. Most other examinations of modern society are made easier to swallow with a candy coating of satire or science fiction. Having no coating does make this pill hard to swallow. Was it hard to write because of the harsh nature of the subject? Were you ever tempted to soften some blows or dip the whole concept in candy coating?

message 1505: by Chris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chris Baker Was this book purposely a retelling of the Parable of the Good Samaritan?

message 1506: by Alexa (new)

Alexa Lopez How was it writing something that wasn't part of the Harry potter series? Was the change refreshing? Was there relation to Barry and Harry at all?

message 1507: by Andry (new) - rated it 4 stars

Andry Chang If a "casual vacancy" should happen in a complex metropolitan like Jakarta, what do you think will happen?

message 1508: by Kit (new)

Kit How did you come up with such a wonderful idea for a story?!

message 1509: by Juliet (new) - rated it 3 stars

Juliet Krystal is such a strong character whose persistence and fight and refusal to take no for an answer is what binds so many readers to her. Why, then, suicide? How does that fit with her personality? If suicide had not been an option, just from a hypothetical standpoint, what would she have done instead?

(Krystal is great, but Fats Wall is a brilliant, original, yet very real character. Well done.)

Michelle I was intrigued by the Jawandas. What kind of research did you have to do to create those characters? Why was the father so underdeveloped (as compared to Parminder and Sukhvinder)?

They were my favorite characters, and I was glad you had some immigrants in the book. Was it an intentional contrast to the usual bucolic and lily white stereotype of the English countryside?

message 1511: by Laulizz (new) - rated it 4 stars

Laulizz What about the poetic revenge at the end of the book? Didn't you think about finishing everything like in its right place, giving a lesson to every character instead of killing the weakest one?

message 1512: by Gabby (new)

Gabby I have read all your books (and plan on reading your new one.) Is The Casual Vacancy anything like Harry Potter?

Alexandra Once I began to feel for the characters of The Casual Vacancy, the book ended. Did you ever consider expanding this book into a series? Maybe the first book of a trilogy? As an avid HP fan, I believe that you are brillant at creating a larger world for your readers to dip into - and stay there - for a while.

message 1514: by Tammy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tammy I missed the deadline, but anyway, I would ask, what I asked her on Goodreads -> who is the protagonist and why....

message 1515: by Ayushi (new)

Ayushi Sareen Were you scared that Casual Vacancy wont get the same attention as Harry Potter did? Did it make you feel insecure about your career as a writer?

message 1516: by Salazar (new)

Amna Wasim when are the results going to be displayed

message 1523: by Gayle (new) - rated it 3 stars

Gayle Williams What struck me most when I read interviews about you, was how long you had been imagining the Harry Potter characters and story plot for - that they had been brewing away in your head for years and years and developing into such full and vivid characters and situations.

Was this a similar process to creating this novel? Were you able to feel as close to these characters or did time constraints mean that you had to use other means?

message 1524: by Dhruv (new)

Dhruv Sharma Do you plan on taking the Harry Potter series any further ? Is there any scene there might be a book about Harry's children...

Carrie Talbot-Ashby Seems such a simple question compared to some of the others, but myself and my partner are massive fans of the Harry Potter books, for ourselves and reading them to our children, and also having read 'The Casual Vacancy' I would love to know what genre of book do you prefer to write? Obviously you are amazing at delving into the mind of a child lol, but if you could only write ONE genre, what would you choose? xxx

message 1537: by Evan (new)

Evan What was this book about? (I haven't read it).

Ian George Not to do with The Casual Vacany, but do you think you will ever write a prequel to the Potter Series a bit like The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien or the star wars' prequels?

message 1548: by Anam (new) - added it

Anam Zahra Have you ever experienced some of those issues in your real life that the characters in your book did?

message 1549: by Bethany (new)

Bethany This is such a drastic change from your previous books such as the harry potter series; the major themes in the novel deal with social issues like drugs, prostitution and rape. How did you get these social issues across without 'harming anyone's feelings' but still portraying it in the way it really is?

message 1550: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Riopel I would love to see her continue with Harry potter
