I used to read P&P on an annual basis until I rearranged by books and it got trapped in a box. I decided that with TBR pile getting larger and larger I should read something else for a while.

Of the several Jane Austin books I've read, P&P was my favorite.

Amy I'll chime back in once I've read Lament. It's on my to read list.

I liked it and I'm really looking forward to reading the next book.

message 2507: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) Picked up Catching Fire and was carried away immediately. Suddenly finding myself at page 113 without even thinking. The book had me buzzing. I've only ever felt that once before with a book: The Midwich Cuckoos.

Amy Me three on Paranormalacy. I need to make another library request soon.

Yep it sure is a fast read. Make sure you set alarms to do things (like eat and sleep) or you might come out of a CF daze at 2 a.m. with a growling stomach and a confused expression on your face, it is that addicting! :D

Kellyflower | 136 comments Jules wrote: "I'm going to have to look up Paranormalcy. Everybody seems to be recommending it."

Jules, it's def YA. The heroine is very much a teenager and acts like one. I thought it to be flirty & fun.

Thanks for the warning, Arya. I've read some 250 pages since yesterday and am tempted not to go to bed yet, but family life tends to regulate such things ...

Paula (pauldajo) I'm listening to Paranormalcy.

I remember reading Flowers for Algernon in middle school. I really loved it. It's one of those types of books that I find myself thinking about from time to time.

Alan (alanmccluskey) Exhausted! just reached the end of Catching Fire the 2nd book of Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games. Exhausted and dubitative.

message 2521: by juliegoonie (new)

juliegoonie I went to the library yesterday to check out a few books that you guys have recommended. Every single book that I wanted was either checked out or they just didn't have it - boooooo. I ended up checking out A Wrinkle In Time. I've never read it before. So far, it's really good. Looks like I'm going to Barnes & Noble this weekend!

Switzerland? As I've lived in the country for many years, I wonder what its name is meant to mean here?

Jules
does your library do Interlibrary loan? I've gotten several books like that. I usually go through WorldCat for it.

Alan, I will have to check & see if my library has that. I'm sure they probably do. I'm actually thinking about getting an ereader. Having a hard time deciding between the Kindle & the Nook.

HI. It's a conspiracy on the part of libraries to get people to buy books. It's called the Support Books Campaign.
A Wrinkle In Time? Is that the Madeleine l'Engle book? She wrote, in the afterword: "When I have something to say I think will be too difficult for adults, I write it in a book for children."

Just to dispel a myth, if there's one country that is not neutral it's Switzerland. How could it be with all those banks etc.? Suspect anybody who says Switzerland is neutral of either being blind, bigoted or having vested interests. PS By marriage I am Swiss and have lived in the country for nearly forty years. :-)

message 2531: by Arya (new)

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments Oh that is so cool - that you live in Switzerland.

I don't pretend to know anything about Switzerland's neutrality of not, but ever since Twilight came out that has been the question "Are you Team Edward, Team Jacob, or Switzerland". Maybe it is a bad question, but that is where I got my "faery, wolf or Switzerland" question from! :D

The whole Switzerland question does not bug me in the slightest, if ever I gave that impression. How about team Isabella :-) Actually I prefer The Host by Stephenie Meyer. have you read it?

message 2534: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) I've just begun Paranormalcy by Kiersten White. When i read the word vampire in the first page I could hardly suppress a groan. I realise vampires are not by thing.

I really like The Host. I was a bit prejudiced against it going in because I was still jonesing for more Twilight (go ahead and roll your eyes, haha). But I thought it was an interesting story and was really hoping she would've followed it up by now.

Now I am anxious to hear your thoughts on book 3. It seems that most people agree that book 1 and 2 were pretty darn good. It's book 3 that gets mixed reviews...

I always thought the shirts that said "Team Mike Newton" were hilarious! I loved The Host. It seemed much more interesting and original to me! Though I have to admit I was one of the people who enjoyed Twilight . . . I did like The Host better. I hope she does actually publish a sequel . . . I want to know what happens!

message 2538: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) I loved Twilight too. No shame there.
I doubt if there will be a sequel to The Host. She's not left enough threads open to hang a new book on. It rounds of well and has a finalised feel to it, me thinks.

Host after Twilight: I had expectations too but I was greatly surprised. Here was something new and refreshing where I had feared more of the same. Hats off to Stephenie! I've read it once and listened to it in audiobook format several times.

but it's really not about vampires, it's about Evie..and the company she works for. I thought it was a really cute read.

I totally understand - just be thankful that you get to choose how long you leave off reading it - I had to wait a WHOLE YEAR!! That was not fun!

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Alan - I know that there are mixed reviews about book 3. I tried to keep it in perspective that the ending was not what I as a reader might have wanted but what Suzanne Collins wanted to say about the topic. If I look at it from that perspective then I have completely different feelings about the book. I respect an author's right to take a story where they see fit and consistent with their views. Just my thoughts.

message 2546: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 89 comments I read Orlando in high school Cheryl, it was an unusual concept and I liked it, but I'm still not sure about everything! Maybe something I need to re-read at some point.

I'm reading Pirate Latitudes now. Love me some Crichton. So sad he's no longer here to write mad adventures.

that's the very first movie I saw Tilda Swinton in.
It doesn't hurt that Billy Zane's in that = ) (well back when he was HOT)

message 2550: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I don't watch movies, so I don't know Billy Zane - what character was he? I'll have to look it up when I get further along.

I too loved Wrinkle in Time as a child. Our 5th grade teacher read it aloud to us - outside on the grass, each afternoon all Autumn. Bliss!
