Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments I am liking The Pace so far. So far nothing strange has happened, and I love how the main characters met through a car crash. I think it is supposed to be paranormal though, so it will be interesting how Ms. Shorts brings that all into play, right now it just seems like a fairly normal romance.

I felt she could have done so much more with her character and story and unfortunately it seemed like an unedited draft. Be interested in seeing your thoughts at the end.

Amy I just started Dark of the Moon. Book three in this "shifter" series. Quick read and enjoyable.

Crazy traffic. I live in RPV and my parents in Huntington Beach. It's 27 miles to their house, but during traffic time it's an hour and a half drive. Any other time it's 40 minutes. Stinkin' SoCal, ha ha...

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments Alyson-

The Pace is reading more and more like Twilight's ugly twin . . . I am disappointed! It was so promising in the beginning!

message 2410: by Amy (new)

Amy Finished Dark of the Moon (I was super motivated today) and starting Halo. I picked it b/c the cover is gorgeous and who doesn't love an angel story?

message 2411: by Heather (new)

Heather McCorkle (heathermccorkle) I just started BLOOD PROMISE, #4 of the Vampire Academy series. The series just won't let me go!

message 2412: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanmccluskey) After the emotional roller-coaster of The Hunger Games, the 2nd book of the Rogue Agent by K.E. Mills Witches Incorporated is a bit like budgies twittering. Luckily I find such things amusing ...

Alyson - have you read Fallen? There is a little bit of that thrown in for good measure. I usually like books that are similar to other books I like, but this is sort of sad. I definitely like Sophie better than Bella so far though. . . at least she is demanding answers.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Ayra liked the characters and the concept but it fell flat and the ending was confusing. I too like this genre but didn't think this was well done.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I have just started Stolen: A letter to my captor by Lucy Christopher on audiobook.

message 2417: by Amy (new)

Amy Arya...which book are you talking about? I can't seem to find the message. I loved Fallen and Twilight so I'll read anything similar. Right now I'm reading Halo, which is a super easy read. It's a thick book but it goes quickly.

We were talking about The Pace but really it isn't very good even if you liked Fallen and Twilight.

message 2419: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finished reading Mockingjay this weekend. I gave it 2 stars.

I continue to read The Magician.

message 2420: by Arya (new)

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments I actually thought that the ending was the most interesting part. Ms. Shorts managed to come up with a great villian (about three pages from the end of her book). I enjoyed it, but I think I would have loved it if I hadn't read Twilight and Fallen first, as it was I thought that it was a combination of the two into a rather messy book.

I found myself wishing that Ms. Shorts had just left all of the "magic" or "science" or whatever out of the book because the magic-free beginning was the best part. . .guess I need to read some regular fiction for awhile. Seems like I'm getting a little tired of fantasy.

Thanks Arya! Good to know someone is keeping an eye out for me :-) I saw Paula's two stars. Had me wondering about my ambiguous review of the first book.

message 2423: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) One of the reasons was the continuousn, gratuitous violence. After a while I just got bored and irritated with it all. I finished the book yesterday, so maybe in the future I'll feel kinder toward the book. I doubt it, but it could happen. The first book was great, the second book was less great, but still very good.

I think I gave Mockingjay 3 stars. I loved Hunger Games, really really liked Catching Fire and thought Mockingjay was just okay. Agreed about violence, and just general 180º of the story. Glad I'm not the only one thoroughly disappointed!

message 2425: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I was going to give Mockingjay 3 stars, but went with 2 stars because of the personal irritation factor.

message 2426: by Arya (new)

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments ****** Spoilers ******

If you haven't read the book don't read this . . .

Last warning . . .

Ok, here is my comment:

I didn't like Mockingjay near as much as the first two either, but I thought the writing was well done. I think the reason I didn't like it was Peeta's conspicuous absence through most of the book! I mean don't get me wrong I LOVE Gale, but Peeta brings out the best in Katniss and without him her character really went downhill.

I bet with time you will realize the beauty of this book. Yes there was violence, but there was violence in the first two books, and I found this violence to have more of a "purpose" than the violence in THG and CF. In this book the violence was actually for a reason - the freeing of the districts.

Of course I could have done without some of it (particularly some of the deaths!) I mean come on Finnick dies - what is with THAT?? But Suzanne Collins has never been one to be squeamish about the hard reality of life- that both good and "bad" guys die. It is something that I really respect about her, though it sometimes makes me really upset. It is a sad truth that this book makes us face.

I also didn't like the ending. Peeta's "illness" never really got resolved satisfactorily, but I think we all knew that the series that began with the Hunger Games would not have a classic "Happily Ever After". The ending worked with the series, no matter how un-satisfactory it was. Anyway sorry to "rant" at you, I have wanted to say all of that for a long time now.

She is a great author, but you are right, this book wasn't "fun". It was horrible, but it was beautiful.

I didn't really like The Magician. I didn't think it was YA -- it was marketed for adults, as I recall. You're absolutely right that there is just something missing from it.

Right now I'm reading Clockwork Angel, by Cassandra Clare, which finally came from the library. I love it and can't believe I have to wait another year for the next one!!

message 2428: by Arya (new)

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments YAY!!! Kristen - I am sooooo excited about The Clockwork Angel . . . still haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but I am really happy you are enjoying it. It makes me even more excited about reading it!

Amy I almost bought it but then realized it was only hardcover and I didn't want to shell out the money. Looking forward to reading it.

Arya (izlandzadi) | 686 comments I am re-reading The Coming of Dragons, so far so good, though it is definitely a younger book . . .probably more juvenille then YA.

I'm starting it on my way home from training today.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I just finished Nation. It's not humor, and it's not Discworld - but it's very good. Lots of themes for MG and YA, including puberty, religion, racism, non-violence, gender roles. Leavened with enough wit and excitement to make it thoroughly engaging.

I heard so many bad things about this book! I had decided not to read it but . . . now it is on my to-be-read shelf! You are recruiting a lot of people for Halo I see *high five*.

message 2442: by Amy (new)

Amy I don't ever go by th reviews b/c I usually like what the reviews hate. Interested in seeing what others think of Halo. It's such an easy read, flows well and I really love the writing style. I'm not that far into it but it's very simple and I love that.

Uglies is an awesome book. I loved it. I might need to reread it!

message 2443: by Madeline (last edited Oct 13, 2010 07:02PM) (new)

Madeline | 89 comments Uglies is super good! I've been wanting to read Nation, I wish a copy would fall into my lap, lately I'm not letting myself buy books unless they're obscenely cheap, hah.

I just started The Homeward Bounders today. I always love Diana Wynne Jones so I'm geared up for a good read.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I just finished Stolen: A letter to my captor which I really, really liked and Soulless by Gail Carriger which I'd planned to use for the Reading Challenge.

Guess I should look at my books more carefully, as it is NOT young adult! Ugh... I thought it was a bit risque in some parts and then the ending was what made me look it up on GR. Nope, no YA classification. haha...

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Angela Soulless was a YALSA pick for teen crossover appeal which may be where the confusion came in.
