I felt she could have done so much more with her character and story and unfortunately it seemed like an unedited draft. Be interested in seeing your thoughts at the end.

Aw, bummer. So close!

Crazy traffic. I live in RPV and my parents in Huntington Beach. It's 27 miles to their house, but during traffic time it's an hour and a half drive. Any other time it's 40 minutes. Stinkin' SoCal, ha ha...

The Pace is reading more and more like Twilight's ugly twin . . . I am disappointed! It was so promising in the beginning!

Arya - So glad I am not the only one who felt that way.

Alyson - have you read Fallen? There is a little bit of that thrown in for good measure. I usually like books that are similar to other books I like, but this is sort of sad. I definitely like Sophie better than Bella so far though. . . at least she is demanding answers.

We were talking about The Pace but really it isn't very good even if you liked Fallen and Twilight.

I found myself wishing that Ms. Shorts had just left all of the "magic" or "science" or whatever out of the book because the magic-free beginning was the best part. . .guess I need to read some regular fiction for awhile. Seems like I'm getting a little tired of fantasy.

I continue to read The Magician."
WHAT!! Why the two stars for Mockingjay (make sure and mark spoilers because Alan hasn't read it yet).

Thanks Arya! Good to know someone is keeping an eye out for me :-) I saw Paula's two stars. Had me wondering about my ambiguous review of the first book.

I think I gave Mockingjay 3 stars. I loved Hunger Games, really really liked Catching Fire and thought Mockingjay was just okay. Agreed about violence, and just general 180º of the story. Glad I'm not the only one thoroughly disappointed!

If you haven't read the book don't read this . . .
Last warning . . .
Ok, here is my comment:
I didn't like Mockingjay near as much as the first two either, but I thought the writing was well done. I think the reason I didn't like it was Peeta's conspicuous absence through most of the book! I mean don't get me wrong I LOVE Gale, but Peeta brings out the best in Katniss and without him her character really went downhill.
I bet with time you will realize the beauty of this book. Yes there was violence, but there was violence in the first two books, and I found this violence to have more of a "purpose" than the violence in THG and CF. In this book the violence was actually for a reason - the freeing of the districts.
Of course I could have done without some of it (particularly some of the deaths!) I mean come on Finnick dies - what is with THAT?? But Suzanne Collins has never been one to be squeamish about the hard reality of life- that both good and "bad" guys die. It is something that I really respect about her, though it sometimes makes me really upset. It is a sad truth that this book makes us face.
I also didn't like the ending. Peeta's "illness" never really got resolved satisfactorily, but I think we all knew that the series that began with the Hunger Games would not have a classic "Happily Ever After". The ending worked with the series, no matter how un-satisfactory it was. Anyway sorry to "rant" at you, I have wanted to say all of that for a long time now.
She is a great author, but you are right, this book wasn't "fun". It was horrible, but it was beautiful.

I didn't really like The Magician. I didn't think it was YA -- it was marketed for adults, as I recall. You're absolutely right that there is just something missing from it.
Right now I'm reading Clockwork Angel, by Cassandra Clare, which finally came from the library. I love it and can't believe I have to wait another year for the next one!!

Me too. :( Everyone sounds just like me. Which is lame.

(Well, actually listen, but same difference)

this makes me sad...I returned this book to the library without reading it because it had so many negative reviews.
I'm reading Paranormalcy and I'm really enjoying it. I'm having a harder time with The Piper's Son

It's such a great book! I'll have to check out audible to see what the voice is like :)

I'll let you know how I like it, but I am not picky :)
I'm starting it on my way home from training today.

I've ordered the book. Looking forward to reading it (excuse garbled earlier message)

I heard so many bad things about this book! I had decided not to read it but . . . now it is on my to-be-read shelf! You are recruiting a lot of people for Halo I see *high five*.

Uglies is an awesome book. I loved it. I might need to reread it!

I just started The Homeward Bounders today. I always love Diana Wynne Jones so I'm geared up for a good read.

Guess I should look at my books more carefully, as it is NOT young adult! Ugh... I thought it was a bit risque in some parts and then the ending was what made me look it up on GR. Nope, no YA classification. haha...

Okay, maybe that is why. Thanks Alyson!
