Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It's soooooo good. I have 110 pgs to go, and I just started it this afternoon. I would have finished it entirely, but I came to a very convenient stopping place and I have to work in the morning. :)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) How are you liking The Boy in the Striped Pajamas?

message 1053: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 82 comments Misty I loved Sea Glass. I tend to like stories that focus on people. Let me know how you wind up feeling on the book

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I just read Graceling... last week? The week before? I REALLY liked it... Enjoy!!

I just found out I can only have THREE books on hold at a time. That's just ridiculous.

Renee, did you also read Storm Glass? What were your thoughts on it? I'm reading it now, and having a hard time getting into it.

It's okay. I'm still in the beginning...darn school. Hopefully it gets better, right now it seems kind of repetitive, although that could just be the style. Not quite sure yet since I'm still only a few chapters into it. *sigh*

The beginning didn't cut it for me. Part of the reason is I've forgotten things since book one, so some stuff felt out of left field. But still, it didn't cut it for me. But around 50 or 75 pages, it started picking up. I'm completely in it now, so it certainly gets better. Her beginnings are always iffy for me, but once she gets going, I always end up liking the book.

And now's the time where I stop complaining. That just SUCKS!!!

message 1060: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments That is bizarre to me. At mine, we can request and put holds on all we want, but we can only have so many things checked out at once (something like 5 DVDs, 12 CDs, books = limitless). I don't know what I would do.

Anywho, I just finished up Sea Glass, going to start on The Ask and the Answer.

JG (Introverted Reader) Complain away, Sara! ;). I've gone to the same library all my life and I just ran into it, so it's obviously not something I use that often. But now that I found the limit, I'll probably START smacking into it all the time. Isn't that the way it usually goes?

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments After finishing the latest Diana Gabaldon tome, An Echo in the Bone, and loving it, I wanted something short and Halloweeny (yes, it's a word in my world) and YA, so I went with Thirsty by M.T. Anderson. Hmm, I'm to chapter 3 and it's okay, but I'm hoping I will start enjoying it just a bit more. Of course, I may just be exhausted from Echo. I wanted to read a shorter book before beginning Audrey Niffenegger's new novel, Her Fearful Symmetry.

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments I havent been reading much at all. What is wrong with me?? My goal is 50 books by Dec 31 and I got to 45 and stopped. Ugh! Anyways, I just picked up (again) The Girl Who Plays With Fire... and I STILL have Catching Fire, Revelations & The 13th Child staring at me. And I bought Shiver over the weekend.

message 1065: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments That's 50 all together! Just read those, and you'll be good. 1 book every 2 weeks, and you'll make it!

message 1069: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments Not YA, but I've been totally sucked into The Da Vinci Code. People call it formulaic, and WOW, it SURE IS — and I rarely notice things like that. The writing is really really really really cheesy, and it's UTTERLY predictable... to a point, of course. Dan Brown only gives you so much information at a time, but... But I'm sucked in. Completely. I'm listening to the audiobook as I type! I've listened to 3 discs this evening....

message 1071: by Zainab (new)

Zainab | 164 comments haha Sara. i think his best one was angels and demons. that one was bloody awesome. da vinci code was pretty good, but i also rekon it was a tad predictable.
ive been checking the book shop constantly for Shiver, but they wont get itt!!! am extremely frustrated at the moment...aargh!
am reading ink exchange on my phone, but it takes a lot of battery, so i onli read it occasionally...have been reading sky people, brignads mc-cherub and another book that i keep forgeting the name of for awhile now...i really need to finish those books..:)

LOL! Have you noticed, Sara, that when it's reading you stay up for, you can somehow make it through the next day's work or whatever. If it was anything else, we would probably be bitching about having to stay up.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) I'm reading A Certain Slant of Light and the writing is just beautiful. I'm starting to get really into it.

message 1074: by Sara ♥ (last edited Oct 08, 2009 07:54PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments Yes, I have definitely noticed. I didn't even take a nap today, because I came home after my morning class (7:00-7:45) and listened to more Da Vinci Code!!! I finished at about 5:00pm. Oye. Funny thing about that book. I read a lot of books that, well... won't be winning Pulitzers any time soon... Many many that are super cheesy and ridiculous (*coughGeorgiaNicolsoncough*)... I've read lots of romance novels, even... but I've never felt like I needed to create a "guilty-pleasures" bookshelf until now!! It was so incredibly cheesy and predictable and contrived and the writing.... Every time Dan Brown introduced a new character, it was like the book stopped and Dan Brown appeared to introduce them, "Hello, reader. Meet this new character, Sara. She's 5'5", medium build—quite curvy, has shoulder-length brown hair, hazel eyes that are more green than brown, and is from Texas, but doesn't have a Southern accent because she's from a large city." I mean, seriously. Bad bad description. But I was so drawn in... I mean, GEEZ! It was inexcusable. I mean, I rolled my eyes, and went "NO WAY! That's just NOT TRUE!" a lot... but I couldn't put the dang thing down. And can I just say, I totally didn't guess who the bad guy was! I completely fell for the misdirection that I'm sure Dan Brown put in there on purpose....

ANYWAY! Now I need to finish Inkspell (audio). My husband loves when I listen to audiobooks, because I usually clean while I listen! ;)

Alisha - I LOVE A Certain Slant of Light! Enjoy!

See, I just couldn't get past that. I wanted to be able to get into it and enjoy it because I thought the idea was compelling. But his abilities weren't. I especially loathed the tiny little chapters that flitted back and forth. I think the goal was to build suspense, but it just pissed me off. I won't read another of his works.

And Alisha, isn't that a fantastic book? It has such a unique feel.

REALLY? That must be personal preference, because I LOVE short chapters. That book had under 500 pages, and OVER 100 chapters. I love that. And those mini chapters weren't long enough to build suspense! I mean, when a chapter takes 30 seconds to read, can you really call it suspense? *shrugs* Silly Dan Brown.

What did this comment remind me of..... I Am the Messenger. A bunch of people said that all the short, one-lined paragraphs in IAtM drove them crazy. I love those, too (although I've only LISTENED to I Am the Messenger... twice).

I'm making progress on Inkspell. I'm in the middle of disc 13 of 16. But The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl by Shauna Reid is due back to the library by 5:00 PM tomorrow... It's an Interlibrary Loan, so I can't extend my time or drop it in the drop-off slot late Saturday night.... And I've got 250 pages left. Of course, it reads a lot like the blog it's based on, so that won't be hard to plow through it!

Misty | 1505 comments I haven't read The Fetch yet, though I completely intend to. I loved Certain Slant, and I think I've talked my book club into picking it for next year. And I can't wait for Leviathan either. I love Scott Westerfeld.

I just started Gil's All Fright Diner. I'm surprised in some ways that it's classified as YA.

I have not read this yet-- but in all the stores out here in my area of California, this book is definitely in the "adult" section of the bookstore (aka, it's in the regular SF/F section).

message 1080: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Yeah, the library I got it from has YA on the spine, and I've seen it in catalogs as YA, and I've started reading it, and I'm like, wtf? Really? It's pretty adult to me. Goddamn was one of the first spoken words on the first page, and it just keeps going. Not that kids don't curse, but books with language-overkill don't tend to be marketed toward them unless it's a kid doing the cursing.

message 1083: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) I finished A Certain Slant of Light last night and absolutely loved it! The writing was just absolutely beautiful. I do have The Fetch by Laura Whitcomb and will probably picking it up soon.

Anyway, since A Certain Slant of Light was so great, I figured the next book I read won't be as good. And when I start thinking like that, I get into a sort of reading slump. So, to curb the slump, I decided to re-read The Second Summer of the Sisterhood. A re-read helps to sort of cleanse my palate and that way I can pick up a new book afterward.

Donna (dfiggz) | 1332 comments I am now reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

Thereafter I might either work on my Libba Bray series or my City of Ember series. I have read the first book of each series and own all the other ones but just never got a round to it.

You need to add that to the reading habits thread. That's hilarious.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments It's true though! Or sometimes when I'm in an emotional slump, I reread a favorite book... sometimes just my favorite parts, and it picks me right up! This week I reread the whole Secret Society Girl series.... :) Love those books!

I've been really bad about reading period. I finished one book in September. And I finally finished The Girl Who Played with Fire last night. It was the neverending story for me. Although, I did enjoy it. I just could never find the time to read it and it lasted much too long for my taste because of it. I am going on a YA reading splurge next... Burned, Catching Fire, and Shiver are all up next. :-)
