Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I love this thread over on TNBBC, so I thought I'd start one here.

I need to complain about this "Wild Things" group! Ever since I joined (less than 24 HOURS ago), my e-mail inbox has been STUFFED with update notices! I feel like I'm treading water in a bottomless pool of comments! ;)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I like the notices... They help distract me from work.... Errr.... Ummm... I mean, what? Huh?

You can borrow my mom if you want! She's pretty much the opposite of yours, from the sound of it....

message 3: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Women! They can be so moody sometimes....like 18 year-old daughters for example! They have the perfect lives, perfect bodies, perfect future, and yet they find something to complain about. OMG! I have a pimple! OMG! This house is a prison camp!

I could go on, but you get the drift....

teenage angst....I oughta sic the Menses Gestapo on her butt...

message 4: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah, I have to say I criticize my mom LOTS less now that I am one myself. It changes your whole perspective.

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Oooh. Not very nice mum!

message 6: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Although I do call my daughter "wretched-ness" on a fairly constant basis.

But she IS wretched!!!

Your mom sounds like she needs Laura's drugs. lol.

message 8: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yes, over-the-counter Progesterone cream. I can send some out in your next package lol.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments All right! I'm off to a conference out of town... We'll see if my BlackBerry will let me comment on these threads remotely! Either way, I'm going to have a BUTTLOAD of e-mails when I get back.... The better to whiddle away hours on Saturday with, my dear!

Also, wish me luck with not getting Swine Flu! I'm going to be about 20 miles outside of San Antonio...

message 10: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yea, might be a little overkill on the freak mode with the swine flu.

*just a little*

message 11: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Exactly! Many more people die every year from the seasonal flu, but you rarely hear about it.

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah. One toddler died in US just recently of it. But that's the only death so far here in US.

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) No, I'm actually agreeing completely with you - just wanted to update the info Saved had shared.

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments People just need to use common sense. It is amazing, though, how many people you see who don't cough into their elbows, who pick their noses(and these are adults, on the el train)and who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom or before they eat. Whenever I see people doing these nasty things I want to scream at them!

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Good point. Why invite trouble?

There was a terrible flu that went around a couple months ago here in the US. My daughter had it, and half her school had it - they almost closed the school. The kids were going to school sick because they didn't want to miss tests, lectures, etc. Why didn't they close the school? Hello??

Anyway, I live in a small town in central MD and a teenaged student at a local private school died of that flu. So it happens all the time.

message 16: by Kandice (new)

Kandice My daughter is so worked up over this double damned Swine flu! It makes me mad, because like you guys have said, people die all the time, but the school had an assembly about it, a nurse visit each classroom and the news has it on every 2 minutes. She's a little nervous wreck!!!

message 17: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I'm a germ-a-phobe. Even though this whole Swine Flu thing concerns me a little I'm not that overworked about it though. I've lived in the college dorms and have seen other people's nasty habits. So I just try to protect myself the best way possible. Beyond that I don't think there is much you can do and I don't see why people panic over practicing common sense.

message 18: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Mine didn't know a thing about it until I mentioned it yesterday...but she's inclined to be like her dad and actually there's a balance to hit with this I think. You can't discount it completely or pay attention too much, but you have to at least be aware of what's going on, esp. if you go to a place like a school every day where there are hundreds of people.

message 19: by Kandice (new)

Kandice My worry, is that she is TEN!!! I mean, why are they getting them all freaked out in elementary school? It's like they are encouraging these kids to be little Monks. I mean Adrian Monk, the OCD detective?

Anyway, I hate that she is so scared. If someone coughs, she will scoot over. A sneeze? She flinches. She asks us to feel her forehead all the time. It's too much, and I certainly did not encourage this.

message 20: by Kandice (new)

Kandice It's funny, Fioan, but along the same line of thought, Darby's soccer coach always makes the girls roll around on the ground before a game. Even if it's muddy he makes them, so they wont be afraid to get dirty. They already are!

message 21: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments My 8 year old heard about Swine Flu on the radio yesterday and was asking a lot of questions. I'm sure this is scary for young kids. I'm surprised they haven't made a big deal out of this at his school. The nurse at his school is an alarmist!

Jackie (thenightowl) Kandice wrote: "My worry, is that she is TEN!!! I mean, why are they getting them all freaked out in elementary school? It's like they are encouraging these kids to be little Monks. I mean Adrian Monk, the OCD det..."

Don't encourage her because she will either become a hypochondriac or like Monk. lol.

Fiona, I have read that before. I know it's been said that we overuse sanitzer which is why we aren't as immune to germs anymore. I can't help it. I have a bottle of Purell everywhere. I only got like this because once I did get really sick from a virus. I had used the college's computer room and was snacking there. I was so sick I had to go to the emergency for dehydration. After that Purell has been my friend.

message 23: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments LOL, I like Purell myself and keep it in my purse. I wouldn't say I over use it either, but there are instances when you NEED to use it!

White Track suit strikes me funny! I have a perfect mental image of a "chav" now.

message 31: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I had already added those little details! We have chavs too, but we call them ganstas, or playas! LOL

You should try watching The Office on NBC. I find some of the humour on there to be rather clever at times, and other times over the top.

message 38: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) As comedies go, I think it's the best one out there right now April.

message 39: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yup, and so would I. It can be pretty crude, but I haven't seen any non-crude comedies in awhile, other than some re-runs.

message 40: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I like The Office on BBC too. Our American Michale Scott is an ass, but a charming ass. The BBC equivalent is just mean.

message 41: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 30 comments How I Met Your Mother is pretty darn funny, too. That and The Office are my two favorite comedies. And I'm shamefully addicted to Grey's Anatomy, but I won't argue that it's quality television, just hard to tear myself away from.

Really, if I had my way, I'd cancel cable and just get anything I wanted once it came out on DVD. I'd rather spend my time reading. But the bf watches a lot of TV, and so I end up watching more because of it. Although! Mr. Non-Reader has recently been roped into Harry Potter and can't put it down. He's finished the first and moved immediately on to the next, which means he's already read more books than he read all last year. :)

message 42: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) My favorite tv shows are: The Office and Chuck and Big Love and Bones... I think that is it. I used to be hooked on Dancing with the Stars, but I haven't watched in a couple of seasons.

I used to love Boy Meets World. Now they have crap like Hannah Montana and stuff like that for tweens to watch.

message 44: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Okay, my major rant... For my marketing class we were split up into groups and we had to create a marketing plan for a not-for-profit organization. Our team has six people in it and I feel like the group leader and I did all of the work. I just finished spending the last four hours correcting it (27 pages single spaced) and I feel like my head is about to bust open. It makes me angry at my other group members because they are such slackers and didn't do anything. But this is worth 30% of the class grade so I couldn't like not do anything without them and make them suffer or whatever.

I am reminded of when, from a group of five or six, I ended up doing the entire presentation project on The Canterbury Tales.

The rest of them so did not deserve my grade on it, either!

message 46: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments I hate when group work is assigned and everyone gets the same grade. When I am a teacher, I am definately not going to give all members of the group the same grade. I think to make it fair, I am going to ask each member of the group to describe what they contributed to the project, this way people don't get stuck in those situations!!

message 47: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Awww, Fiona that blows.

Here's a mini-rant: I only recently as in yesterday, discovered that my university library has a limited YA section. I finish the semester in 8 days, I could have been getting wonderful books for free during my time here...

message 48: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments My rant is that I want classes to be over! I get my review at work tomorrow and I'm biting my teeth over it. *sigh* I'm mad I forgot a book to start at work tonight. Ummm and my fiance came to work to visit me and is in the basement watching Farscape and I haven't seen him since we ate dinner together two and 1/2 hours ago!

message 49: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) April, the other problem with that is that you just have a group that tells everyone what they "did" because no one wants to be a bad guy that causes other people to get a worse grade because then you will be hated forever. My professor gave us an evaluation sheet to fill out about all of the other group members, but I don't feel like I can mark them down without it coming back to bite me in the butt. My group leader did just write and say that when he divides the points or whatever, he will make sure I get a few extra for my hard work, so that is a good thing...

message 50: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Oh, no, not like that Kathryn, I meant, let's say I am in a group, I make the Powerpoint, on my sheet I would then say this is what I specifically contributed as well as attended and participated in 3 group meetings. I would not ask them to rate the other students in their group.
As a future teacher, it's not my job to be my students' friend, I am there to teach and help the students attain analyzation skill-sets.

About the whole bad-guy thing, at this point in my academic career, I could care less whether people in my classes like me or not, big deal if I don't get invited to the big frat party. You get the grade that you earn plain and simple, why should I lie about someone who made me waste my own time doing their piece of the project?

I sound really curmudgeonly. I'm probably going to grow up to be the person who always says,"You damn kids keep off my lawn!" and I'd be waving my cane at the kids then go back in to hang out with my 50 cats. In conclusion, please don't take what I said the wrong way, I'm not a crazy cat lady ---yet.
