Hollie is really sweet, I agree. However, I don't think she should have been allowed a second chance. I mean, she won't have a second chance on The Royal Variety Show, will she?

I can't stand reality TV for the reasons you mentioned above Fiona. I think it shows the worst of human nature and really puts integrity on the line for the all mighty dollar (or Euro). The big news over here is Jon and Kate and who cheated on who and who's abusive to who... I mean, c'mon, this stuff happens all the time to all sorts of people, why would I want to watch people be mean and obnoxious to others? And this is why I still have rabbit ears on top of my TV.... ;)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) Ya got your digital converter, Jennifer? LOL

I'll be glad when the conversion's over and done with, just to stop seeing the ads!

Hehe, I do, but I only get 1 channel anyway, and it might not convert. Fine with me, I'll stick to my books. ;)

message 155: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) The only one I watch with any regularity is What Not to Wear (US version with Stacy and Clinton). (And I watch that religiously.) I like it because it's not a competition and they are genuinely trying to help the person. Sometimes it's with tough love, but at the end the "contributor" is always happy and grateful. At first glance the show may seem shallow but it's not at all.

I admit I sometimes pause on the dancing ones, but that's because I like watching big dance numbers. (Probably because I can't do it!)

message 156: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments When ARE they supposed to convert to digital? It's been put off by over a year now, right? Or is it just 3 or 4 months?

I love What Not to Wear! :) My mother-in-law watches it, too, and I have noticed a DRASTIC change in her clothing over the past 6 years... for the better! I'm soooooo proud of her! I think she even likes clothes shopping now! :)

message 157: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments It was supposed to be in Feb!

message 158: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Now it's June 12th. We just dumped our cable because we never watched it, and we bought the converter boxes about 2 weeks ago.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) Less than two weeks - get yer digital converters now if ya got rabbit ears!

I am also a big fan of What Not to Wear.

message 160: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments We'd never get rid of cable, my boyfriend would die without ESPN.

What Not To Wear is awesome, I picture Stacy and Clinton and what they would say whenever I buy buisness clothes.

message 161: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) This is not so much a rant as a complaint. I start my summer classes tomorrow (two online classes all summer, and night classes for six weeks, Mon-Thur 6-9:20pm). And I feel like crap. I was out for 2 hours in the rain on Thursday and developed a sore throat. Then I spent Friday with a fever. I've been coughing and hacking all weekend but since it's the only week off I had before summer session, I still went out every day and did stuff. Basically, I've been ignoring the fact that I'm sick. I've had a lot of fun, but I feel like crap, and my sleep schedule is destroyed. (Sleeping about 4am-10am.) This should be the least of my worries, but I don't want to start class as "that sick girl." Ugh. And assigning $100 textbooks for short summer classes should not be allowed. I don't care what curriculum you've set, find something else.

message 162: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I can see spending $100 on a textbook if it's pretty and has glossy color pictures, etc. But why is it that the $100 textbooks are always the ugly, boring, black-and-white ones that are printed on the lowest quality paper available? What gives???

(Sorry you have to buy expensive textbooks! I hope you feel better soon!!)

message 163: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Alexis can you order an older edition of the textbook? I know some professors don't mind, especialy if all you are using the textbook for is background reading.
Also, have you tried getting it on interlibrary loan? I know I used WorldCat for most of my textbooks since there is no way I'd ever spend 100$ on books I don't want when Borders has plenty of awesome books I do want for under 100$!!

message 164: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I search for textbooks (and all other books I want to buy) at www.addall.com -- that website searches a tons of different websites to find the lowest price.

message 165: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments SO OMG I need to rant. Yesterday I wake up to no electricity, and my boyfriend comes in the room and says we need to move out. Our landlord had told us we were allowed to stay until the 7th, but apparently magically forgot, so we had to move all of our things to my boyfriend's parents garage. Then we came to the place we are moving into and the other person still isn't out so we started cleaning, vacuuming dust bunnies, picking up trash to help get a move on, and they got all angry, because God forbid someone actually put trash in the trash. UGHHHHHH, plus everyone keeps different hours than me so they get mad when I stay up late to keep my sleeping schedule uniform. Yeah, so I spent last night in the bathroom reading which was a good thing, I guess, but I would have been much more comfortable in my chair at my old apartment. Like seriously, landlord, how hard is 24 hour notice.

The only consolation is I had a tiny bit of downtime today to begin and get into the Lightning Thief which is amazing.

message 166: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments That's horrible April! I'm not looking forward to moving again this November if I get this job I interviewed for.

My small rant is that they haven't called me yet and it's been a week! Grrrr.

message 167: by Jennifer W, WT Moderator (new)

Jennifer W | 1289 comments Mod
Jeez, April, that's pretty crappy. I hate moving, but it's gotta be ridiculous trying to do it in a day!

message 168: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Yeah thank God for large trashbags, instead of folding my clothes and packing them neatly, I just tossed them in the bag! The worst was packing my books. My boyfriend just wanted to leave them in the apartment overnight and we'd come back to get them, but I flatout refused, because what if the landlord put them out on the lawn? Someone would take them and that would be a ridic amount of money down the drain. Plus my books are like my kids, I couldn't just leave them. I bet you all understand that hahaha

message 169: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Oh yes, we understand about the books. We moved a couple months ago and my boyfriend and I argued a lot about my books. I got rid of a lot of them and now I use the library, but I still have 3 bookcases. I wouldn't have left them either! It sucks that you had to go through all that unexpectedly. At the next place will you have a lease to protect your rights as a tenant? Or is the next place the "dump" you'd mentioned? I love looking for cheap decorating tips if you ever want to talk about it.

message 170: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments The next place is the dump. We're going to paint it and shampoo the rugs, and hopefully my bookcases will class it up a bit ;-)

message 171: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments I haven't been on as much as I have been and sadly I haven't been reading at my normal pace because I'm currently visiting family here in California. But as much as this was supposed to be a little vacation, I am doing things for my brothers renewal of vows. Today I spent my day ironing the table cloths and chair covers for the reception. And we've only done like 2 bags of the 7...and they need to be done by friday and there's other things to do...not enough time for me to read...GRRRR

message 172: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments So, ran into my friend who was in on my interview two weeks ago. They offered the job to someone else. But they offered it last Monday and have not heard back from her yet... so I'm crossing my fingers. Otherwise, time to start applying again... *sigh*

message 173: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments Ugh! I hope they don't hear from her so you can have it!

message 174: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I'm hoping she gets some other job and I get that one! Bleh, on to search for more jobs. . . yuck yuck yuck!

message 175: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments I know what you mean Kristin! Right now I'm a SAHM but once Jacob gets old enough to stay by himself after school I'll be looking for a job. I don't mind working at all but I HATE job interviews!

message 176: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Well at least there are about 5 - 10 jobs within 1 and 1/2 hours of me. I forgot my flash drive, so I'll be working on that tomorrow night. *sigh* I hate having to start the process over again.. arg!

message 177: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments So I went to wal-mart today to buy some board games, hoping I could get original Clue and original Catch Phrase. BUT NO! All they had was f-in Harry Potter clue and DVD clue. Don't even get me started on Catch Phrase.

Seriously, those games are sooo fun, why ruin them with cheap marketing ploys?!

message 178: by [deleted user] (new)

They tend to have a lot of the original games during Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) shopping.

message 179: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Hang in there Kristen there is a job out there for you. Sometimes it just takes time to find it.

message 180: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Oi, I know. I've got a billion to apply for now.. *sigh* I keep putting it off. I do have a job to go back to if I can't find a better one, but it's hourly, not salary pay and the administration is now rocky there.

message 181: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 459 comments April, have you seen the Scrabble Slam? My husband has been all over town looking for that damn game and can't find it anywhere. It's sold out everywhere he goes! There are some hard-core scrabble players out there apparently!

message 182: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 390 comments We bought Scrabble Slam about 6 weeks ago at Target. It's a lot of fun!

message 183: by Kandice (new)

Kandice This is no one's fault but my own. I had Gaiman's time mixed up in my head, thinking it was 1p.m. my time, when it's actually 11 a.m. I have to pick up a child from school early today as it's the last day and will likely miss it:(

I will still get to read it later, but was so excited...

message 184: by [deleted user] (new)

Where on the site do I have to be for the Q&A?

message 185: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks! I will be there!

message 186: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Okay, so I previously posted about having a job. Well turns out it's a 40 mile commute, 80 mile round trip, my boss is racist and homophobic, and they think I am incompetant because I get my tasks done quickly and it often looks as though I am doing nothing. I think I am going to quit in a few hours.

I know with the job market being what it is, quitting is not the best option, BUT I feel I'd rather not have a job, than have one which puts about 400 miles per week on my car which already has over 100,000 miles on it, and have to deal with constant dread of work.

Has any one else ever quit a job?

message 187: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Yeah, but always when I had something new to walk right into - or at least knew it was on the way. Of course, I've been fortunate to love most of my jobs.

message 188: by Robert (new)

Robert (flagon_dragon) I quit a job to become a student again.

message 189: by [deleted user] (new)

I left a job a few years ago when (a little late, I'm afraid) I realized that the management had been playing dirty tricks (they went into fraudulent bankruptcy a few months later), especially with me, the assistant director of studies. I swallowed the big chief's story, hook, line and sinker and still feel like such an idiot, and a traitor to the colleagues who I was supposed to be protecting.

I'm still unemployed, but refuse to work for less than I am worth or for a situation that is less than clear (although I took one job that didn't pan out, but at least this time I could tell the woman was a crook and left before I got too far in.)

April, I think you should stick to what your conscience tells you. 400 miles a week might be worth it for the perfect job, but if you're not convinced any distance will feel too far.

message 190: by Nirmala (new)

Nirmala | 18 comments Hi,

Year ago, I went into work after having worked over the weekend. To find that the management had changed the schedule for the project that we were working on and had decided that everyone would be working extra hours during the week and on working weekends. Also that all holidays in th enext few months were to be cancelled, well I have two weeks books as holiday.
Well, I decieded that it was not worth it. So I just resigned that morning.
April, A bit like you, I did not have a job to go to. But life to short to spend at a job that you do not enjoy and having to travel so far to get there as well.
The funny things was, I received a phone call from a friend later that same day and within a week I had a new job to start when ever I wanted.
That was the best thing I ever did, loved the job and made so many life long friends at the new place.
So my advice would be, go with your instinct, you will never regret it, what you might regret is not having done something sooner.

message 191: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments Can I just say you all are so wonderful and fantastic? I really appreciate the advice and the personal stories.
This group makes my day! :-D

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments Today the delivery people came with a box that my mom and I had shipped from the States (it contained some of the things we bought, including some books, but it weighed too much for us to bring back on the plane). But by the time I ran out to the gate to open it, they were already in their truck driving away. They didn't even wait. even though I was shouting that I was coming and they didn't leave a note saying when they'll return or a phone number to call.

message 193: by Sara ♥ (last edited Aug 03, 2009 10:33AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments How rude! Geez!

I don't necessarily want to rant, but I lost my job at the end of May, and while we have some money in savings, but I'm starting to freak... I really really need a job, and it has to be local, as my husband is in school here. And there just aren't many openings right now. The University has a hiring freeze... everything is just slow slow slow... I'd like to know when Obama's "brilliant plan" is going to start working...

message 194: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments I hope you find a job. :-) I know not having one suckssss. Have you thought about working a crap job temporarily until something opens in your field, just to have some money coming in??

message 195: by Sara ♥ (last edited Aug 03, 2009 11:04AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments Yes. I've pretty much resigned myself to that. It's hard when you have a degree in something that should make you very employable, but being in a small area with no openings.... (I know I've been prideful... not willing to "lower" myself...)

Or having not enough of a degree... There's a community college here, and I thought, "Hey--I could totally teach college algebra!" but they want you to have a B.S. in Math. I have a minor in math...

Right now, I just want to work at Barnes & Noble.

message 196: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 312 comments You would be great for B&N temporarily, I bet your knowledge of YA is superior to many other candidates.

Also, I think if you have a math background you could do Teach FOr America, they are starving for people to teach math/science. Oh oh oh, and maybe even just subbing in the mean time. I know to sub in NY all you need is a high school degree and a pulse. Plus the ability to press play on the vcr/dvd players.

message 197: by [deleted user] (new)

Barnes & Noble sounds like an awesome in-between job! :)

message 198: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I could definitely sub, once school starts back up.

I talked to the manager at B&N, and they weren't going to start hiring until the middle/end of August, so I need to put my application in. I definitely know a lot about YA! Plus, I think many people who want to work there are students, who have to work around their class schedule. I can work all day, every day. *shrugs*

message 199: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 623 comments being a former manager at a retail store...if you can work any hours...that's huge...i hope things work out

message 200: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandaroby) Can I join in the rant about jobs? I just found this thread. I think I mentioned in a different thread that my husband lost his job of two years a couple of months ago. They told him he "wasn't a good fit" for the company (after two years!). He was up for a raise. The guy they hired was just out of high school, while my husband has a degree and ten+ years work experience. Thus, we think it was about money.

So it shouldn't have surprised us when they disputed unemployment. It hurt horribly, being attacked by this company that he had put two years of grueling work into.

They won! They lied about my husband, and won the dispute. We have an appeal on Thursday the 13th, which we hope to win. It's all very upsetting. In the meantime, we have no money. I'm disabled, which means I can't work at all. I get disability, but that's $400 a month.

My church family is helping us out tremendously, as well as our families. It's a depressing situation. If you are the praying sort, could you pray for us on the morning of the 13th? We'd really appreciate the help.

I won't be around much in August. It's hard to stay motivated to do much, and I just don't feel social. Which is nothing at all against you guys (the best YA group in the world). I promise to be back, laughing and chatting as soon as I can.

I'll still lurk, I'm sure. I just can't bring myself to chat often.

Amanda R. in Louisville
