message 3565: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1 comments I'm Sam: I just joined because I have a few Goodreads friends in this group, and the reading mix is exactly in line with my eclectic taste.

I love contemporary and classic fiction, bio, fantasy, general nonfiction, some YA, some sci-fi, some memoir.
Besides reading, my other big passion is travel: have visited 29 of 50 US states, about 30 countries to date (I'm 30) and hope to visit more! Favorite countries visited so far include Japan, Chile, South Africa, and Italy; my must go list includes New Zealand, India, Antarctica, and Peru.

Excited to participate in some group readings for Nov/Dec!

message 3570: by George P. (new)

George P. | 422 comments Hi I'm George. I've been a Goodreads member for 2 or 3 years. One of my GR friends, Gary, is in this group (he is the most astonishingly eclectic reader I know of).
I've read lots of classic novels and would be interested in the apparent upcoming group reads of Daphne du Maurier's The Birds, and Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day. I really enjoyed other books by these writers: Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Never Let Me Go. I like that the group has several books to choose from each month.

message 3571: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, George. As an eclectic reader I can definitely attest to the benefit of having a variety of books to choose from each month. Glad you joined and looking forward to seeing you in the discussions.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome George and Manda, I'm glad you've joined us! We like to have a selection of group reads to choose from each month, so there should always be something for everyone.

I'm also excited for the short story read of The Birds next month, as I've really enjoyed a few of du Maurier's novels.

you wouldn't be working off the Guardian 1000 list by any chance?
that's the one I'm mainly using - I am also in the specific Group for that too!

message 3582: by elin (new)

elin (elinsbooks) | 2 comments I cannot believe I've just found this group! I was just commenting to a friend how I need to find a group that focuses on the classics and here this group has appeared to me today.

My name is Elin and I'm a librarian in western Pennsylvania. I love to cook and bake, have a passion for continuing my studies in history, and love exploring the world of scotch.

My favorite book is either Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf or Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. When I'm not reading classics, I do try and keep up with some YA books, as that's a large part of my job, and I read a lot of historical non-fiction. (Mostly British history, although I've been reading quite a lot of Russian history lately.)

I'm looking forward to reading along with all of you!

message 3583: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2169 comments Welcome elin! :o)
I have Mrs Dalloway slated for early 2017, so will let you know what I think!
I see you have over 6,000 books on your TBR shelf - that should keep you busy! :oO

I'd love to read and discuss Mrs. Dalloway! I try and re-read some of my favorites each year. My TBR list grows each time I order books for work, although my eyes are usually bigger than my reading stomach can actually handle and I go in and weed it from time to time.

Looking forward to discussion.

Sandra (bookwormblue) | 9 comments Hi, I'm Sandra. I just found this group. My favorite novel is Jane Eyre (also a fierce Austenite) and I tend to be drawn to classics with a gothic or romantic edge. I'm also a big fan of historical fiction, modern fairytales, and works by foreign authors. I tend to read in phases and am having a "dark and twisty" phase at the moment.

I'm looking forward to reading and talking with all of you :-)

message 3590: by Brina (new)
