Saad K (reader_s) | 14 comments Sorry to upset the custom, but i am ill read, with a bare book shelf, like a window shopper i simply admire covers and read simply the backs by way of introduction. Until one day my pocket allowance allows a clean copy, to be held, cos well my library can only stock so well. Thus when the groups request reached my inbox, to participate in a poll, i was hesitant to proceed clicking on titles i have never heard. of lifes of author's i know nothing about, including all their beliefs, no sir voting thus has little use in my life. i rather introduce myself to the more well read, the better connected to the family of authors, the one that can recommend a read to add benefit to my life making more personal matches, having conversed and shared in my company. Not simply what the majority decree. Then, let not my non participation be mistaken for being inactive, for I keenly look forward to what more knowledgeable people have agreed. I share my profile and thoughts so lines of acquiantances can be forged for the said above purposes of healthier books to my own development. I am enjoying my first ever read of a Thomas Hardy book, i like his subtle humor and he writes with poetic prose that makes the imagery easier to set for a novice like I. Rare find indeed, such a soft hand, and o what humor so delicately prosed so not be of show, but appreciated by the one who gives it the respectful thought it deserves - early days only 6% in.

message 3403: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Saad, there's no requirement to vote in the polls, or to join in any of the group reads, especially if none of the books have any particular interest to you. Read what inspires you, share your thoughts if you want to and join in here with whatever aspects of the group that you enjoy. We're happy to have you around whether you participate a lot, or a little. We all have to start somewhere as book novices, only by trying new things can we learn what our tastes are and develop as readers. If you're having trouble accessing books, then you might like to try Project Gutenberg, which has a huge online resource of free out of copyright books to choose from. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your first Hardy, feel free to let us know your thoughts when you're finished, but only if you want to :)

Jim Townsend | 143 comments Good morning!

Well put, Saad, on your first reading of a Thomas Hardy book--which one? As Pink said, glad you're enjoying it. I was reading A Laodicean : a Story of To-day until I lost my Kindle Paperwhite last year in the aftermath of a flood in my kitchen and living room caused by a burst hose on my clothes washer. I have a Kindle for PC with 334 books on it including The Laodicean. I purchased for it, less than a week ago for a buddy read in another Goodreads group, an omnibus of H.P. Lovecraft's complete fiction. Earlier this year I read Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles, which was okay except that I didn't much like Tess.

Now reading When Pride Still Mattered: A Life Of Vince Lombardi for a buddy read.

Sorry if I rambled on and on.

Jim

Lulu (lulureads365) | 0 comments Hello! I'm Lulu from Texas. I love to read historical fiction and mystery/thrillers. Over the past couple of years I have been branching out more. I'm not a literary genius, but I do love a good story. Some classics that people adore, I hate and vice versa. Lol

I absolutely loved Tess of the D'Urbervilles and absolutely hated Madame Bovary .... just to show how horrible my opinions are! LOL.

I look forward to reading more classics and making more friends. :)

"Wellcome! So many books, so little time!"

MKay, sorry to interrupt, welcome to Charlotte, but i do find the time is plenty, plenty enough to finish a book, only an impending natural disaster will stop I when I sail forth, and not let a nap get in the way. I have vast ambitions to read, morning, day, and night, read in the dew, read at dawn, read at dusk, read a little with a "hello google" by my side. Read under the clouds, read under the stars, read in the rain, read in the cold, read all winter long.

O no Jim, that is an awful lot of books to read on PC, I too have experienced the benefits of a kindle the ealier keyboard version. Does the paperwhite work at night or does it require a side light?
You do have to be careful, I recommend wrapping a clear polyester bag and making it waterproof if your going to be near water, i 've made a special retreat out back water tight, fighting away the British winter, but still within acceptable standards of Amazon Fire use, and breathing in the fresh air, fresh oxygen to the brain helps comprehension. Having said that once the kindle simply sat on my bed and when I got up the codes had frozen, but Amazon promptly sent out a replacement.

I am reading Far away from the madding crowd. Ahh the folly of the tumbler, i've wrestled too with the storm of dirty water and cross contamination, to be spun again and again, no can't say I am but a fan of the conventional washer. I take a slower pace to life, I clean a single garment by the hand, at first it was frustrating, I made an error reproducing the pounding of a motor straining, but as I watched the peaceful brisk of the wind, and appreciated the drops from a natural shower, I appreciated the constant gentle draining away of filth in nature. Like a statement to the police, i swore then, in my oath, i shall not ever return to the motor - do what they may.

I will check out Tess_of_the_D_Urbervilles, high praise from Lulu too. i like the title of the book you mentioned last Jim, but i rather investigate Thomas some more.

Good day.

Matt | 1 comments Hello! My name I Matt. I live in New England and love the history up here.
I have been a huge fan of classics now and one of my favorites are 1984 and The Outsiders.

I am big on the dystopian fiction for a while too such as Fahrenheit 451 and A Clockwork Orange.

My favorite classic book is definitely The Great Gatsby since its nice cool roaring 20s lifestyle makes it so great. It has a lot of great symbolism in it too.

I am a huge fan of 2 very talented authors named Ray Bradbury and Stephen King, I'm sure you've heard of them before. My favorite work of Stephen King would be The Long Walk because I just love the characters and I still miss them to this day.

The first two books that got me into reading and made me very interested in Literature were The Outsiders and And Then There Were None. I was assigned them in school and I've been reading ever since.

Recently I joined a challenge on another group to read books about Ireland and/or by Irish authors. I started reading "Portrait of the Artist" which I had read a really long time ago, and realized how much I enjoyed the classics. I see you guys are reading "Picture of Dorian Gray" next month so I figured why not join in! :)

Balmora Hello everyone, I'm from Minnesota USA. I am a fan of Sci Fi, but as of late, I haven't been reading. To the point were I will always play a video game instead of reading, even a silly phone game. Recently I have noticed that I have become entranced with my gaming that I don't write or read at all anymore. I decided to join your group in hopes that with a bit of self motivation I can at least start reading again. When I was a younger man, reading was a large part of my life; even if it was mostly star wars books.

Si (books & coffee) Hi all, I live in the UK and would describe myself as a 'bad weather reader' (I read the most during the darker months). I'm fairly new to classics but have recently decided that I would like to read as many as I can and hope that joining this group will help me identify as many as possible. I've read a few classics over the last few weeks and an early leader for favourite is 1984......

I am a huge, no, HUGE Dickens fan and have been saving a couple of his works to finish the set whilst gorging on some crime thrillers and modern classics to fill the gaps. Thanks for listening!

Kim. E. | 8 comments Hope I'm doing this right.... Everything takes me awhile to learn and practice a lot because I had a stroke at 40 and life changed in a second. (Took 3 years to relearn how to read, but it takes longer than it used to.)
I'm Kim from Indiana, have a delightful, very engaging daughter who has the nerve to live out west, but stays in touch.

I'm happy to be here because there are so many classics people will refer to and somehow I missed them all. This will encourage. Hi all
