Kym | 1056 comments Is the unsolved folder getting out of hand due to so many older threads being bumped by a non moderator?

☯ DαякєηRнαℓ ❛ ᶜʳᵒᵘᶜʰᶤᶰᵍ ʰᵘᵐᵃᶰ ; ʰᶤᵈᵈᵉᶰ ᵗᶤᵗᵃᶰ ❜ (darkhearteternal) | 856 comments I don't think so. I mean, I am no moderator here however the threads being bumped are old, and of course, most have proven to be abandoned by people no longer logging into GR. So if they aren't looked at now, their just basically becoming a piling heap of nothing. Which would still be there tomorrow.

She certainly does seem to have quite an enthusiasm for bumping :) (no offense intended).

Side effect is the newest ones have been pushed some pages behind.

It would happen regardless, the only difference is that its happening now. And again, the old dead threads ARE getting sorted. Always positives and negatives to almost everything I think.

Sure, there are both sides to everything. For the really abandoned ones to be moved, there have to be comment from moderator and 2 years of no response from the OP after that, I think. So bumps in such potentially abandoned threads just prolong their agony :)
Otherwise I'd be interested in bumping the ones which don't have any response from the OP beyond the initial post, too, as that might help the active ones getting more focus.

Arielle Masters | 252 comments I figured bumping the oldest ones would let a lot of new eyes look them over - and in some cases, that's exactly what has happened. In others, they're just obsolete and the mods are deleting them (sooner rather than later, as one of you said). Thought I was helping, but since I'm not, I'll stop other than for threads I have possible insights for.

☯ DαякєηRнαℓ ❛ ᶜʳᵒᵘᶜʰᶤᶰᵍ ʰᵘᵐᵃᶰ ; ʰᶤᵈᵈᵉᶰ ᵗᶤᵗᵃᶰ ❜ (darkhearteternal) | 856 comments Oh no! No no that isn't what anyone meant! At least I didn't mean it that way. You've been a big help I'm sure :)

The thing is I've looked at most of these old threads and when I look at the group page nowadays with some amount of them bumped I don't find the new ones so easily. But I'm sure you've been of help, too.

Mods don't delete threads no matter how obsolete. If there is no response from OP it gets moved to the Abandoned folder, from where it can be moved out should she/he choose to come back.

I certainly didn't mean to upset you Arielle. My only concern was the amount of bumped threads in a day that pushed the new threads back a few pages. Sorry :(

☯ DαякєηRнαℓ ❛ ᶜʳᵒᵘᶜʰᶤᶰᵍ ʰᵘᵐᵃᶰ ; ʰᶤᵈᵈᵉᶰ ᵗᶤᵗᵃᶰ ❜ (darkhearteternal) | 856 comments Okay so, technically, this has been reviewed by two moderators, however there is this duplicate thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

where the second thread is much more 'active' then the first. Why not delete the first and keep the second?

Also, this is just to say, the group is very unorganized. You have a general folder with miscellaneous items in it, then you have the book folders then suddenly another 'general' type folder with more miscellaneous items and then a moderator's thread. I dunno, maybe review what sort of miscellaneous threads there are, see what is truly crucial and keep those while deleting the rest? Or maybe move certain threads into another folder? Or move folders? I just feel like the group is very busy and a little cluttered. It could be organized better, with no offence meant.

When there is more than 1 comment, something might be worth preserving, some opinions here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Plus someone may be following the-thread-that-gets-deleted and may not notice the pending deletion in time to migrate to the other one. I think there was one post about such occasion.

☯ DαякєηRнαℓ ❛ ᶜʳᵒᵘᶜʰᶤᶰᵍ ʰᵘᵐᵃᶰ ; ʰᶤᵈᵈᵉᶰ ᵗᶤᵗᵃᶰ ❜ (darkhearteternal) | 856 comments Perhaps, however a moderator could very easily copy and paste the information over into the other thread, what's more a deletion notice could go up for a month or so, giving everyone plenty of time to migrate over. I just feel its unnecessary / there are alternative options instead of keeping duplicate threads which ultimately only add to the clutter.

message 185: by Ayshe (new)

Ayshe | 4721 comments I like the current folder structure, the General folder has few important for first time posters threads (not that all of them read, but still).

I think most of the clutter is due to the fact that some people don't bother to reply after creating a thread (or life gets in the way, but some of the non-responded-to topics' creators are otherwise active on GR :/). From what I read on similar groups/boards on librarything and abebooks that (people not replying) is not so unusual though.

I looked at all of your examples and they're fine; i.e., we generally do not delete fairly long threads where lots of people have posted, even when they are duplicate threads. We close one and keep the other active.

In cases of duplicate threads where one is substantially briefer, we do sometimes delete it after copying and pasting any pertinent information. A thread usually has to be fairly short (1-3 posts, generally) if we are going to delete it.

message 188: by Ayshe (new)

Ayshe | 4721 comments Yona, this is thead for threads that are out of place and should be moved.

For the book you're looking for, please see your thread and reply there: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

DαякєηRнαℓ and others, thank you for your comments about the folder organization. This is an ongoing issue for a large group that's been around for many years. After a careful review by the moderators, we updated the folder labels and order. Already we see an improvement with fewer requests going into the wrong folders, which means less work for the moderators and hopefully greater clarity for our members. Thanks again.

Any time a moderator takes the time out to listen to the members is appreciated, so thank you Kris and all other moderators :)

#198 done. Thanks Ayshe. Deleted members can be tricky to spot when we're quickly scanning new posts.

General note: It may take moderators up to a couple of days to work through the queues and move threads to appropriate folders. Thanks for your patience.
