What Are You Reading - Part Deux
Jackie wrote: "Today I'm going to start reading Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys."Enjoy. It's a really good book.
Thanks, Lisa. I do think I'm going to like it; I'm only 20 odd pages in but am looking forward to getting stuck into it later, which is a good sign :)
I have moved on from Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis which I finished and will do the rest of my venting at my ftf book club. I'm still annoyed about that darned book. Anyway now I'm reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts One and Two which is so not written by J k Rowling and a very old scifi book by a master of the genre The Corridors of Time by Poul Anderson.
I startedA Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles last night but didn't get too far. I'm hoping that I do better tonight. So far, its highly entertaining.
Hi all - I just joined and thought I would chime in with my current reads: Beautiful Chaos, and City of Fallen Angels.
Everybody dreams in Behold the Dreamers, the debut novel of Cameroonian-born author Imbolo Mbue. Then the GFC of 2008 hits NYC.4.5★ My review

Stargirl – Jerry Spinelli – 5*****
I’m long past high school, but I still remember the “pack” mentality that required conformity. It’s painful to revisit that, but Spinelli does a great job exploring what might happen, and how the events might affect some of the students.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon – Grace Lin – 4****
What a delightful story for middle-school readers (and adults). Inspired by Chinese folklore, Lin weaves a fantasy tale of one young woman’s quest to help her family. Minli’s courage, grace, kindness and perseverance are to be admired. I am reminded of the stories my grandparents, aunts and uncles told on many a night, as we sat on the front porch in the dark, my imagination running wild with tales of adventure.

Finished Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts One and Two and I gave it 3.5 which I initially had as 3 stars and then decided to use 4 stars but I really wish we could officially give 3.5 or 4.5. Some books just miss the mark.I'm almost done reading The Corridors of Time by Poul Anderson which is a classic scifi book and I'm loving it!
Hi everyone!I am new and wanted to join in on the thread. I am currently reading Love in the time of cholera written by Gabriel Garcia Márquez.
Hi ThereI'm new and wanted to join in too. I'm currently reading The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler. It's really good. Very intense...

This is another one of the books calling to me from the shelf. Someday! But in the mean time I have started reading The Woman on the Orient Express who is, of course, Agatha Christie.

Hi Marianella - I haven't yet read Love in the Time of Cholera, but I'm glad you reminded me of it. I hope you will let us know if you review it!
I have a challenge going with another group and I needed to read a book written by an actor. I selected Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant by Dyan Cannon. There doesn't appear to be a co-author/ghost so I have to say she's done a very nice job of making (what I've read so) honest and at times funny. I'm really enjoying this book.
Hi everyone! Everyone's got a good book to get them through the holiday weekend?
I just started reading an advanced copy of Alex Behr's debut collection Planet Grim. It'll release in October. It's quite good so far!

Starting Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult tonight. Looking forward to it as I've always enjoyed her books.
The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins – 3***
In a future dystopian North America, twenty-four contestants fight to the death on live TV. Collins draws the reader in and made me care about Katniss. She’s a strong, intelligent, resourceful female heroine. The cliff-hanger ending is a pet peeve and I dropped a star for that.

Maurice – E M Forster – 4****
Written between 1913 and 1914, Forster’s novel of a young man’s awakening homosexuality was not published until 1971, a year after the author’s death. I loved the way that Forster developed this character, showing Maurice’s progress from a naïve student, to a young man awakening to the possibilities that a mature and loving relationship might offer him.

Reading a classic, Around the World in Eighty Days and a fun read, cozy Agatha Raisin and the Wizard of Evesham.
Islam isn't sexist and feminism isn't "Western". Old cultural practices are just that - old. Susan Carland's new book, Fighting Hislam: Women, Faith and Sexism, explains it well. Don't blame religion for bad behaviour!

Jackie wrote: "I've just started Watching Edie by Camilla Way. I'm interested to hear what you think about it once you've finished.

A lot of people loved it, and while I wasn't quite that enthusiastic, you can safely read my review - no spoilers! - and see if you agree when you're done.

5★ Compassionate look at early-onset Alzheimer's disease: Who are we when we aren't ourselves? Still Alice is by neuroscientist and author Lisa Genova. I don't know whether or not the lower case i in the title, ALiCE, is to show that she is disappearing, but that there is still a bit of her left at the core.

Hi Shannon, I gave Watching Edie 3.5 stars. Thought it was pretty good but the ending felt a bit rushed for me.Have just finished Small Great Things by Jodie Picoult which I gave 5 stars to. Something about her books just pull me in every time.
Today I'm making a start on His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet. Sounds very interesting from the blurb.
Shannon wrote: "Pamela wrote: "Hi, guys! Just finished Even the Wicked by Lawrence Block and now have to decide whether to read another of his books or something different. I've recent..."Well, it also doesn't help that despite having a sizable stash of books to read already, I went to a library book sale over the weekend and walked away with 19 books for $14! So, I'm pretty much closing my eyes and just grabbing :))
Kidding aside, I tried to pick up some classics and authors I had long wanted to read, so I figured it was still a good thing, even if I now have not only books beside the bed, under the love seat but a bag as well!
I discovered that I'm back up to several of the same author so dove into more Elizabeth Peters. My cousin had sent me several and I've read a few this year and was down to two, and opened one last night to begin reading, when I realized that I had just bought an earlier book in her Amelia Peabody series, so of course, I got up, went rummaging and found
The Hippopotamus Pool. Thank goodness they are quick to read. Maybe I can get both books read this week and return to winnowing down the olde stash!
Just finished reading We Bought a Zoo. The basic premise of buying a zoo was used in the movie but everything else is different so I enjoyed reading it. Now I'm reading Turtle Diary and Tricky Twenty-Two. Almost up to date with Ms. Stephanie Plum.
Enjoying this bit of history from the Civil War. Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion, and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson is about the legendary Stonewall Jackson and the author keeps it moving.
This week I read: Apoca[hot]lips by Paula Houseman (hilarious Rom-Com); The Unlikeable Demon Hunter II by Deborah Wilde (book I was terrific and I loved book II even more!); The Mask of Duplicity by Julia Branna (I liked it so much I got the whole series!), Clockwise by Elie Strauss (YA - time travel - highly recommended!)
Loved my re-read of The Happiest Refugee: A Memoir by Vietnamese-born Australian comedian, (lawyer, who knew?), artist (we know now) Anh Do.

Well post last night & today's reading binges I finished Turtle Diary and Tricky Twenty-Two so tomorrow I will start reading Heidi and The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat.
Absolutely mesmerising, compelling, overwhelming. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara is both harrowing and full of love.

It's such a small world. I worked with Hanya's uncle in Hawaii and he gave me a copy of her other book, The People In The Trees, not long ago. He said it's intense, but I haven't started it. Have you read that one yet?
My scheduled reading got interrupted by an email from the Library. Before We Were Yours came in for pick up. Book is not scheduled for publication until 6/17 but I put myself on the wait list and I got it early! Don't know if libraries get books before the stores do but I'm happy!

I read it and it gives an insight to some hillbillies and their way of thinking. I hated the author by the end. He came off as too pompous for me. The story also left gaps in a lot of his relationships.
