When I’m not reading, I love to play boxed games like Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly and Scattergories. While the first two would be hard to tweak into a challenge, Scattergories seemed like one that could – so here we have Scattergories SRC Style.

HOW TO PLAY:
Step 1: Draw a random letter using the following link: Random Letter Generator
The letter chosen will be the one you use to fulfill your categories. For the purpose of this task, if you draw a Q, X or Z – you may draw again.

Step 2: Roll two dice - Roll here -- If you get two of the same number, roll again until you get two different numbers

The dice numbers will be used to determine which categories the books you read fit into:

Categories (your random letter should match the first letter of the following):
1. Male Author (first, middle, or last name; no initials)
2. Female Character Name
3. Word in Title or Subtitle (excluding the, is, a, an, was)
4. Female Author (first, middle, or last name; no initials)
5. Male Character Name
6. Word in Series Name

*For Character Name – the character should appear in at least 50% of the book in order to be used. The name should be the one they are referred to primarily during the book – for example, if their name is William, but they go by Bill for the book, then Bill is the name to be used. A character named Mary Lou could be used for M, but not for L (unless other characters routinely call her Lou).

You may fulfill the task requirements with 1 or 2 books.
For the 2 book option – one requirement must be met by each book, no minimum page count is required (other than standard SRC rules) for the 2 books.
For the 1 book option – both requirements must be met by the book, minimum of 450 pages for the book.

Required: State the letter you draw, the numbers you rolled, and explain how your book fits very clearly in your post.
Example posting:
30.7 - Scattergories SRC Style
Lover At Last by J.R. Ward
I drew a B with the random letter generator
I rolled a 5: one of the main characters is Blaylock (Blay)
and a 6: the series is the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
I chose the one book option- the book is more than 450 pages at 591 pages

NOTE: Books with genre "Children's" or "Kids" with 100+ pages may be used for this task.

NOTE: Genres “Graphic Novel,” “Sequential Art,” “Comics,” and “Manga” may be used for this task.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Lemme think Aleksandra :) but I'll put up ideas in one of the reserved thresds

message 8: by Sam (new)

Sam | 174 comments Ok I've got an F & I rolled a 3 & 6 & after much trawling through my to read list I think I have a one book option.

A Feast for Crows- Feast in the title, Fire in the series title & my copy is over 900 pages.

Have I understood that right?

message 9: by mstan (new)

mstan | 868 comments Aleksandra - if you like William Shakespeare, maybe Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream?

message 10: by Bea (new)

Bea Just curious...

Letter W, Dice 2 & 3

Would Willow work for one book option?

message 11: by Ty (new)

Ty | 563 comments Dee, this is seriously complicated, kudos! But I think I figured it out!(aside: omg, the tasks are harder this season, I'm scared of the 25 pointers...).

Is this okay?
Letter M, rolled 3 and 5. one book option - Lover Mine with John Matthew as the male protagonist.

That's correct Sam!

right idea, but it isn't long enough - if you use the 1 book option it needs to be minimum 450 pages - Willow is only 350, but it works for one of 2 books

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Aleksandra wrote: "I'm looking for a male character whose name begins with L. Appreciate any ideas :)"

if you like Paranormal romance - the first book in Nalini Singh's Psy-changing series has a Lucas - Slave to Sensation

Ty - i'm going to say no, because of the John - sorry - he is referred to as John more in the book than he is to John Matthew - sorry

Bea Dee wrote: "right idea, but it isn't long enough - if you use the 1 book option it needs to be minimum 450 pages."

Yeah, I just realized that. Oh, well.

message 17: by Fran (new)

Fran | 730 comments Love the task Dee!

Letter R, rolled a 2,4

The R female author will be no problem.

Is there an easy way to search character names?

message 18: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments here are some - http://www.behindthename.com/namesake... - these look to be mostly classics

message 19: by Fandury (new)

Fandury | 957 comments I've got the leter C, and rolled a 5 & 6.

Can I use The Fall of Hyperion

The Book is part of the Hyperion Cantos und one of the characters is called the Consul throughout the book.

message 20: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments yes it looks that like it will work - I can't verify the use of the name Consul - but I will trust you to decide if they don't meet the 50% rule to not sure the book

dang. So, first or last name is okay? or just first names only?

message 22: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments first name only - the reason JM doesn't work is that a) it is a 2 name name, so only the first name counts; and b) he is called JM or John more than Matthew...if his name had been JM and he was called Matthew all the time, it would have worked (does that make sense?)

message 23: by Ty (new)

Ty | 563 comments Alrighty, no problemo! He is called John through most of the series, so I agree with ya. More hunting through my TBR. It's a serious addiction, this challenge stuff...

message 24: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments lol - you have no idea...aren't you glad I told you about it ;)

message 25: by kiki (new)

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments for #3, will you accept words in the subtitle also? thanks for your help! :)

message 26: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Yes - titles and subtitles count

Fandury | 957 comments Dee wrote: "yes it looks that like it will work - I can't verify the use of the name Consul - but I will trust you to decide if they don't meet the 50% rule to not sure the book"

As he is one of the few who will survive till the end of this book, and wasn't called anything else in the first part of the series, I'm rather optimistic. But if it doesn't fit in the end, I will use something else.

message 28: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Sounds good to me then

message 29: by Claire (new)

Claire (proud-mum) | 1086 comments I got letter I and rolled 5 & 6.

Bea @ Tien: Nick & Norah

For 5, if you haven't read Gone Girl, the main character's name is Nick.

message 41: by Tien (last edited May 20, 2013 04:32AM) (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2304 comments Thanks, Kate. I've just found a book with a Nick, now I need a N-girl

@Bea: Thanks anyway. I've read that too and quite enjoyed it!

message 43: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 2062 comments If you read YA, I just finished a good one with the main female lead named Nora:

The Book of Blood and Shadow

message 44: by Christine PNW (last edited May 20, 2013 07:17AM) (new)

Christine PNW (moonlight_reader) | 33 comments Dee - I rolled 3 & 5, letter L. Just making sure the word in title can also be the name of the character - as in The Lies of Locke Lamora?

message 45: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Yep that's fine (plenty of L's in that title)

message 46: by April (last edited May 20, 2013 08:01AM) (new)

April Will this work for 1 book?

I rolled an A with 2,3

Affliction with main character Anita Blake Book is 576 pgs

message 47: by Bec (new)

Bec (foreverfnm) | 132 comments I feel like it's a little bit too easy, but I rolled a 5 & 6, and got the letter N.

Would Deep Black work as a one book option? The series name Nick Stone also happens to be the main character's name - Nick. It is long enough - 512 pages.

message 48: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments #46 and #47 - both look good - I figure for some the combos will be hard for others easy

message 49: by Ann A (last edited May 21, 2013 02:51PM) (new)

Ann A (readerann) | 1091 comments Fun task, Dee!

Can anyone help me with a female author name beginning with 'O'?

ETA - Just found one: Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns, but would appreciate any other ideas!

The only one I can come up with is Baroness Orczy of The Scarlet Pimpernel fame.
