For our group, we use the definition that the setting of the work needs to be at least 50 years before the publication date.
For dual storylines - 50% must be in the historical setting. We do not count historical fantasy, magical realism or alternate history for the HF bonus.
I realize I did not put in the rules, but "regulars" were following the rules so I feel like we need to keep with them. If you counted a book that had any fantasy (magic elements) or time travel and you counted it as HF, please back out the bonus points.

JoLene, I am disappointed that the three books are not going to be recognized as HF. I based my book choices upon the definition I found on Goodreads for HF and they are listed as HF on the site. I chose to read these particular works because of their historical setting in a time period I am not as familiar with. I am glad to have read each of these...all award winning pieces of literature. Just really disappointed.
