Review:
Overall I really enjoyed this YA paranormal story. Despite some things being easily guessed, there were some MAJOR surprises that kept me on my toes. As the book goes further into the story, the reader knows who to trust less and less. Trust or not... Eli is HAWT on a cycle (motorcycle no less- a Harley, too). Even if he is a manic-depressive douche (or at least seems like it... almost all the time). I am very keen to see where the story goes, there were aspects I liked and didn't like, but overall it's a 'win'.
Book provided by the Author through PNR NaUBA group Author/Reader Exchange.

So "icing on the cake" is OK then, right?

We have to focus on cookie, cake, and chocolate. The last item will be called 7/19 so it only leaves 2 more weeks of reading after this week. Please leave fruit alone unless it's called. Other wise what we've already claimed for cookie, cake, and chocolate won't even count. It won't be possible to complete it if another food item gets called before the challenge is over. We took too many hits in the food category :(
My book this week has both cake and chocolate in it. I haven't decided which I'll claim. I will definitely be claiming cat and kitchen. Then I'll be all finished with the architecture category. Suzanne will be done with the furniture category this week as well.

That's going to be tough because my book I think only has fruit in it, but I'll have to check again to make sure.

I did find another book that I currently have on hand to read that has cake in it.

so I guess "tossing their cookies" doesn't work either....
The only other one I can find is fruit: "I can't stand the fruity shit." Would that work?

This reminded me of a supernatural version of Beauty and the Beast. Miranda is a fire starter who's family has become absolutely broke. When the mysterious and feared Lord Archer propositions her father for her hand in marriage her father can't and won't refuse the money. Archer hides behind cloaks and a mask and the rumors and dread know no limit. Even though he keeps himself covered and sheltered Miranda sees through it and there's no doubt love is in the making. Both have terrible secrets from one another and to top it all off there's a killer on the loose that's setting Archer up. The only way to come out on top is if they both let go of their fears and secrets and help one another to catch the killer before it's too late.
The romantic tension between Archer and Miranda was just the right amount. In fact there are some scenes in this book that are some of the hottest I've read even though nothing really happens. The mystery element of this book kept me turning the pages and I liked that Miranda wasn't a helpless female. With this book being set in the 1800's it was nice to see that Miranda didn't stick to the stereotypical mold for women of that time frame. If you like paranormal and historical reads this might be the book for you. The two mixed nicely and Ms. Callihan did a good job balancing both in this book.

I would go on the "Items Questions" or discuss (or whatever it's called) thread and ask Dawn

I have one lined up next week that's perfect for the items I have left, depending on what's called. Everybody cross their fingers that desk gets called this week that would be perfect for us!

Icing on the cake is kinda iffy but I'll take it.
Let me know if I missed any other questions.

This was a really good book! When I started reading at first, I found the story to be slow at first, but as I read on, it got more interesting. I like the whole idea of drawings coming to life except some of them can hurt you or anyone else if you aren't too careful!
Items:
Couch(Sofa): I strode past her and collapsed onto the tiny purple couch in the living room (Page 33)
Cake: She brought homemade sweets to go with the tea, pink nerikiri flower cakes and manju filled with red-bean paste. (Page 58-59)
Snake: At least twenty snakes made of ink wriggled under the rice-paper door. (Page 268)
Garage: The room was a big parking garage, and our steps sounded hollow against the concrete floor. (Page 259)
God/Goddess: "The most famous kami is Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun." (Page 131)

4½ Brilliant Stars, Hearts, and Mystery Shots!

I have to be 100% honest here, I was expecting a 'fluff romance'. Now, to me, there is NOTHING wrong with a fluff romance. There are times where that was exactly what the Doctor ordered. I couldn't have been farther from the truth when it came to Loving Liberty. It was far deeper, more emotional, and darker than anything I had anticipated. I loved each and every moment, and wanted (oh-so-badly) to jump into the pages and help corrupt Liberty a bit.
I was so emotionally invested in this book, I shook with fury and had to put my Kindle down and walk away for a 'chapter break'. I was worried not coming from the same background as Liberty might create a barrier to feeling sympathy. Once again, totally wrong. If anything, it really opened my eyes. 'The grass is always greener on the other side' until I read Liberty's story. That is some dead, trampled, ugly, poisoned grass that's just been glossed over with expensive green paint to hide it's true nature.
I gasped, I railed, I misted up, I gripped my Kindle in a vice of death, I didn't want the story to end! And color me surprised, a relatively 'clean' romance (but don't mistake that as meaning a YA story, this is NOT a book for kids)... I left this smut lover stunned at how much I loved this very 'vanilla' romance.
Throw away your preconceived notions of the allure of the 'it' crowd and that 'upper class' old money crowd. You know, never mind, it doesn't matter if you throw them away or not. I can't imagine anyone not falling for the innocence, romance, and incredible hardship and bravery found in these pages. I just can't express enough how amazed I was by Loving Liberty.
I received an ARC from Belinda Boring in exchange for an unbiased, honest review. My thoughts are my own, and I received no monetary gain for my review.

Sofa Location 2494 "I crossed over to the fireplace, keeping the sofa couch between us."

"At what point do they believe what's been branded on their skin instead of just knowing who they are inside?"
It was a a jarring tale of a descent into the very bowels of Hell, because I can't imagine Hell being much worse than the world in this book. It's like taking the horrific tales of the Salem Witch Trials, only adding a Dystopian, futuristic post-war society controlled by essentially a sociopath dictator. No trial, or even a sham of one. No jury, just ostracized immediately by everyone you've ever known. Just one accusation and you lose everything. Your home, your family, your freedom, your safety, your dignity; you now belong to the Hole.
“To the outside, I'm filth now. I'll never be allowed to return to the life I knew. No one ever does.”
It's chilling; no Camp Cupcake, no early release for good behavior, no pardons...
Relationship are forbidden between the guards and the sinners. The most dire of consequences await those that disobey this rule. At yet love finds a way in the unlikeliest of places... Why does the forbidden fruit always make the taste that much sweeter? The tender moments of love between Cole and Lexi provide the perfect foil to the bleak reality that slaps them in the face each morning.
“He takes my face into his hand, and reassures me. "So outside of these walls, we can't stand each other."
Despite many other reader's experiences, the beginning did not grab me at first. I think I was getting A Handmaid's Tale flashbacks for a moment, and did a mini freak out and had to take a chapter break. Yes it's YA, yes it's Dystopian, yes it has romance... but it's just SO bleak. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Once I had fortified myself, I was able to continue. Then, oh boy, did I continue. Into the wee hours, greedily (Darn it that's a sin, gotten watch that around this book,) inhaling the pages to find out what happens next. For me, once that initial slump was conquered, I happily climbed the mountain and flung myself into the story.
Lexi, Lexi, Lexi. I'm so conflicted over you. On one hand, you have your fierce moments and on the other hand, you are running head first into trouble like you want to get killed. I have to give a shout out moment here to Duchess Nicole*, I think she mirrors my thoughts on Lexi perfectly:
"She started becoming the idiot girl in a B movie, going into the dark stairway with nothing but a flashlight and her boobs to protect her." This. All of this. Exactly. It wasn't enough to completely throw a wrench in my enjoyment, but it was a there. Some moments, more often fleeting and rare, but I would see strength in Lexi. It's quite the contradiction, I know.
“I never planned on falling for you. You were just an assignment. But it just sort of happened and now... There's not a single thing I would change about you. When you smile, my entire world stops. All I see is you. I need you.”
Okay, I think I have to admit here, and I'm a freak (I'll just say it now) but hands down my favorite character (now I really know I'm in trouble) was Zeus, the dog. He adopted Lexi from the start, couldn't care less why she was there, he was smart and loyal... it really tipped my ratings scales just on Zeus alone. Okay, I know I'm getting jumped by all those Cole fans for putting Zeus first, but maybe I like living on the edge.
I cannot stress the brutality of this book enough. Imagine the Hunger Games meets Gangs of New York, and maybe a dash of the romance and forbidden love from West Side Story and then spray bullets on all that and flesh singeing brands... fluffy this is not. Blood, death, torture, the most base desires of humanity. It's entirely anti-fluffy with a few softer moments that rounded the edges. I can't help but want to continue the series to see what is in store for them!
“You can overcome anything...short of death."
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Items:
Horse Location 400 "I've never seen a horse, I mean, dog with -." & Location 402 "He's like a miniature horse."
Mirror Location 365 "I glance at the small, cracked mirror mounted above the sink and see a stranger."
Garage Location 273 "Turning into a side garage, Cole turns off the engine, but I'm too traumatized to get out when he opens the door."
Desk Location 606 "... revealing a well-lit room with a desk at the opposite end. Two chairs sit in front of it."

I couldn't find wolf, and other than horse that was all I was missing. So I didn't claim any animals

Okie dokie!

Review:I liked the story but if I had to hear one more time about how wonderful Safe Houses were for battered women, I was going to vomit. It was like no one ever heard of them and she had to tell EVERYONE in the story about them and how important they are. It got very "after-school spectial" at the end.
