Leea | 1437 comments Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

I hosted this year and made a beautiful Prime Rib, so yummy! We had a glorious holiday because we finally got to stay home. We'd been driving to Sacramento (1 hr away from our home) each day for 3 days for family parties. So, just getting to relax in our home and let the boys enjoy their gifts. Basically we relaxed, played many games and ate too much. Perfect holiday!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Have you looked at your favorite authors lately?
Do you update them? (remove authors who are no longer favorites)
Do you regularly add new authors?

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 67 comments Yes!! I've started to play catch up on my fave authors. The past years have been so hectic that I had no idea what some of them were doing. And *gasp* I had completely forgotten about some that I had absolutely adored!!

No. If they're good they stay forever!

Yes, I do! All the time. My TBR pile is never ending.

How about you Ian?

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I think we should do an audiobook challenge. Something that will last the entire year. Maybe 12 audiobooks over the year.

I have suggestions galore.

#1

1. Contemporary Romance
2. Historical Romance
3. Paranormal Romance
4. Romantic Suspense
5. Two books in different genres narrated by the same person.
6. Female Narrator
7. Male Narrator
8. New Release
9. pre-2000
10. Novella / Short Story (under 3 hours)
11. Over 12 hours.
12. A genre you haven't read before.

Any thoughts?

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments What about a book scavenger hunt? So you read whatever you're reading but you have a list of items you have to find. At the end of the year the person who has the most gets a prize. Nothing expensive...maybe a $15 Amazon gift card (I'd be happy to donate that).

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just took Bella to the vet. She was so excited when I got her harness....was even quite excited at the vet....then when the nurse took her through it was like, "Wait, what? You're leaving me here?"

She is getting an x-ray tomorrow .... small dog issue, her patella might be popping out causing her some pain. Anyway after the x-ray the vet will probably give her an injection they mostly use for older dogs. She doesn't think surgery is the best option just yet.

message 658: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (bvicki) I hope she'll be ok, Ian.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Vicki wrote: "I hope she'll be ok, Ian."

She's OK...sort of.
She has Hip Dysplasia. There is a surgical remedy but it's quite extreme. It involves removing part of the bone. Too extreme.

The less extreme way forward is a weekly injection for the next 4 weeks and then a monthly injection going forward.

I'll also build her some ramps so she can get up on the bed.

message 660: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (bvicki) How long will the monthly injections continue?

My understanding is one injection per week for a month, then moving her to monthly injections with the possibility of scaling them back to quarterly or biannually. But for now it will be monthly and seeing how Bella goes.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Not sure if I've mentioned this before but I had been going to my old vet for years and when Roscoe was hit by a car I took him there. Anyway, he didn't do anything. Just put him in a cage overnight and by the morning he was dead.

I decided then to look for a new vet but I've only recently done anything about it. I tried Green Cross Vets which are a fairly big company with vets all over Australia. I took Bella to them with this issue and she said it was her patella, gave me some anti-inflamatories and sent me on my way. I wasn't overly impressed but I went back a couple of times and finally decided they are a one trick pony.

After that I asked the folks at the dog park for recs and they gave me 3. Winston Hills Vet was the first I tried because they were the closest and I'm pretty happy with them. Dr Pilkington said it was likely Bella's patella but wanted to do x-rays to be sure....and it turns out the problem is hip dysplasia. So now we know what the problem is and can manage it rather than treating something that isn't the real problem as her hips get worse and worse as she ages.

'Just put him in a cage overnight...'

This made me so angry.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Yeah. I was heart-broken and furious. I mean he might have still died, but he should have at least tried....or if there was nothing he could do told me.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I read around 150 books a year. Most are in the genres of Fantasy and Romance though there are also quite a few in Mystery.

So...of the finalists in the GR Choice Awards, I've read 2...one of which was a hack knock off of another (much better) book.

These awards really are a bit of a joke. It should be called the Goodreads Best Airport Books Awards.

I definitely agree with you.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 67 comments Yeah. This years seem even worse.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Something that really annoys me.
People I don't know defending books I didn't like and reviewed negatively.

How dare you dislike their favourite book? :)

Leea | 1437 comments Ian, i'm so sorry! That is just heartbreaking.

I have a Red Boston Terrier, Rocco and he's just a joy. Took him to the vet last week and he was the same as Bella. Until they wanted us to go into the exam room and he was like, no thank you, lets go mom.

Let me see if you I can post a picture, it's been awhile.

message 671: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Leea, Boston Terriers are my most favorite breed in the world. Every time you post a picture of Rocco on Instagram I die a little inside. He is so flipping adorable! (Years ago, when Lex was little, we had a Boston named Rocky, how funny is that?)

Speaking of Lex, for those of you who may remember me from before, she's now 18, in a committed relationship, and living in an apartment with her BF. It's a strange sensation, having my baby leave the nest. It's been a change, but in some ways it's been nice. My husband and I are finding our second wind. We hit the gym regularly, we're both down in weight (my 70lbs down, he's 100lbs down). We're pierced and tatted.... like teens all over again. I'm sure Lex finds us embarrassing. :D

We did trade an 18 year old for an 88 year old. My grandma lives with us, and she's just as Emo as my teenager was. It can be exhausting.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 67 comments Wow! It makes me fell so old hearing Lex is all grown up now and living her life! >_<

Ah, that's great she's living with you, and being a care taker can be exhausting.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I feel old, too! when I joined GR, she was only 6 years old. Now im dropping off groceries to my newly adult daughter. I mean, we're all still trying to get by, but there's 43 years old getting by, and 19 years old getting by.

And legit, I have a video of my grandma saying, "I wouldn't own a dorky coat." she's 88, and I've never heard her say "dorky" before in my entire life.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 67 comments Wow! Made me realize I've been on goodreads since 2010. My how time flies! Ah, at least you're enjoying a new phase together.

Ha-ha, your grandma sounds like quite the character.

message 675: by Ian (last edited Jan 29, 2023 09:19PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments My mother and father used to say "shag" all the time. I can't remember exactly what they thought it meant but the meaning had well and truly changed. I kept telling them they should probably stop using it but you can't really tell an 80 year old what they should or shouldn't do.

And if you like Boston Terriers....this is Joseph. He is Elizabeth's dog. Also in the clip is Bella (my doggo) and Wilbur the samoyed. Elizabeth thinks Joey is the smartest dog in the world but in my opinion he's a loveable idiot.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments A GR Friend sent me this stone she picked up on a beach in California. Apparently it's quite common to find stones with positive messages in some parts of California and presumably other states as well.

So I started leaving little messages in local parks....maybe one a month. They always disappear so I guess they are getting picked up by folks who need to hear a kind word.
