Leea | 1437 comments Peggy, thanks for sharing. That's a great price!!

I got some time to read this morning and i'm really enjoying Son of the Morning by Linda Howard , it's this great mix of history and suspense.

I can't to listen to this audio book. Anne Bishop definitely doesn't write stuff everyone else is writing. Her Black Jewels series is very different but good:

Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels, #1) by Anne Bishop

wow that book has so many up and down ratings -- 1-2 and then 4-5.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I started reading How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff and am really enjoying it. She has a very different style of writing, but I love it. She is remembering what happened, rather than experiencing it in the now and it is very short book - only 194 pages.

I am over halfway through The Shining (The Shining, #1) by Stephen King - the audio is so amazing. I am really impressed with the character development in this story.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I just read a book where certain characters eat the flesh of humans and I can't remember now what it was! you think that would be something that would stick with me.

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I barely had time to read today. I participated in a Breast Cancer 5K walk and I'm wiped out. However, I did finish Sweet (True, #2) by Erin McCarthy early this morning which was probably like a 2.5ish for me.

message 3612: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'm reading At Grave's End (Night Huntress, #3) by Jeaniene Frost .

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments The polls have closed and we have winners for the next two months of group reads.

October : Enemy Within (Enemy, #1) by Marcella Burnard

November : Black Ice (Ice, #1) by Anne Stuart

December's poll will be coming soon. There will be no nominations. Instead, there will be a second chance vote for previous runners-up.

message 3614: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Just finished When the Marquess Met His Match (An American Heiress in London, #1) by Laura Lee Guhrke . The book wasn't bad but it didn't touch me. Don't know why...can't put my fingers on it.

I haven't continued with Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop , but mostly because I don't get to listen as much at home, specially because my husband is always around. :) Tomorrow I'll make some headway!

message 3616: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) i am reading both Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell . Both are good, but Verity is kind of slow for me and Fangirl is just flying by.

Totally with you, Ian. I'm one of those tougher raters. Stacia and I've talked about this, too. To me, a good book is a 3.5 star book, so many of the books I read get that rating. The book has to be better than good to get a 4 star rating; I realize it's still subjective, but some books just have that extra "something" that tickles my fancy or puts it into another category.

If everything's a 5, then nothing is. (A non-unique quote based on the movie "The Incredibles".)

I am feeling the same way. I do not like how Frost portrays Vlad in his books. He is sort of a douchebag.

message 3633: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) OK, so one more post from me in a row - LOL!

Finishing up Linda Howard's Son of the Morning by Linda Howard . It's definitely a Linda Howard book, but it's not at all what I expected. Surprising... and I'm still trying to figure out how she brings the hot, scary Highlander/Templar together with the contemporary learning-to-be-a-badass-because-she-has-to heroine, Grace.

Got a few new books that just released. I'm really into the Lexi Blake series, so I'm happily reading Love and Let Die (Masters and Mercenaries, #5) by Lexi Blake with Ian Taggart. About time for his story!

Then the latest Mackenzie book by Jennifer Ashley is out, The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie (Highland Pleasures, #6) by Jennifer Ashley .

Lots of books on the TBR shelf - literally and figuratively. I feel like I have ADHD, 'cuz it's tough to stick with one book. I have too many to choose from right now!

Still on the job prowl... tough market. I knew that, but it's a whole new world of online apps and trying to network/connect my way through the first few possible levels of getting an app past the initial screening. It's not like I'm technically challenged, it's just a whole new world of ways and means to find those golden opportunities. It's been really knocking it out of me lately.

message 3634: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I just finished The Shining (The Shining, #1) by Stephen King which I loved. The narration is so good.

I just started the audio of Ex-Heroes (Ex-Heroes, #1) by Peter Clines

message 3635: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Marcella, I LOVE Vlad, even his badass-ness... and his grouchiness. It makes him, for me. I kinda like that cantankerous bad boy, sad but true.

I just don't like who she paired him with. She seems too whiny for me. Or something.

message 3636: by Marcella (last edited Oct 01, 2013 12:25PM) (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Vlad, I wanted the Vlad Frost portrayed in NH. He was serious but playful. I was hoping to see that side of him here. He just seems so cold towards Leila considering that is his love interest. I am just not liking that. I think he is more open to Cat than her. Doesn't make sense to me.

message 3637: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) To me, it's 'cuz Vlad and Leila don't belong together... and Vlad felt that he and Cat did, at one point. But again, that's probably just me.

message 3638: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Then why in the hell would (view spoiler)

message 3639: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Yeah, I hear ya, Marcella. I think it's an alpha male thing, and perhaps they do belong together. I saw it more in book 2 than book 1, but I'm still not a huge Leila fan. Maybe she'll grow on me, but she's not what I pictured for Vlad.

The other pairings (Mencheres and Spade) seemed better to me. Maybe because I'm such a Vlad fan, I expected more? But I'm probably being a grump about it. I just think Leila is waaaay too young, both in years and maturity, for Vlad.

I agree with your assessment of Leila's lack of maturity and youth. Then again, maybe the author thinks Vlad needs someone like that to loosen him up. Guess we just have to wait and see.

i felt the same Marcella after reading bk1. i wanted the old Vlad from NH. but in the second book i liked the development of Leila and Vlad's relationship. i also forgot about my opinion of him in bk1 once i read bk2. i think that's why i liked it so much.
it's almost like bk2 should have been bk1 and parts of bk1 should have been in bk2. hehe. i don't know.

i was pissed too with him at the beginning, but if i remember correctly he explains and redeems himself. plus all the fighting and conflict is what did it for me in this book. ur mind may change as u continue to read. maybe =D

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Son of the Morning by Linda Howard and loved it. It reminded me of a fun (but outdated) b-movie romantic thriller movie combined with a version of Outlander-lite.

Starting Dying Is My Business by Nicholas Kaufmann I need a badass book in my life. I have been told that this will be the badass book I need.

And finally getting a chance to get back to Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky, #3) by Veronica Rossi
