Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments i'm just soo disappointed with the "romance" nominees this year...the books were only ehhh, and none of the narrations are blowing me away

message 6002: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Is this the list? http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by...

Yeah the nominees for romance aren't great.

message 6003: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments yep that's it...I cant' believe i'm saying it, but out of the 3 i've listened to so far, the Nicholas Sparks one is the best - and believe it or not, its much more of a traditional romance than his typical stuff - (view spoiler)

message 6004: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That is amazing! I usually bypass him bc I don't like purposeful emotional manipulation in order to gain praise for a book. And I feel like thanks what he does.

message 6005: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments The Longest Ride was actually pretty good - but I was soo used to his typical MO, that i kept waiting for something bad to happen and it never did, which I think kind of distracted me...

I have the Gena Showalter and then the Laura Kinsale to listen to to finish up the category, but yeah...

message 6006: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am not a fan of Gena Showalter, but I have only read one book by her.

I may look into Sparks' book, but it isn't like I need any more audio books!

message 6007: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments i REALLY wish that audible had a loan program, like a one time only, maybe for a month...although, I did borrow TLR from the library, so I couldn't even loan it

message 6008: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read and enjoyed Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #1) by Diana Rowland

Regina, does it start to get more depth to the relationships?

message 6009: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Yes. The first was a very typical "first" for a UF. The next ones are better. You get much more on Kara's relationship with Ryan, a particular demon, her aunt, and Jill. I am on 4 now and there has been a lot of development and surprises.

Dee I so agree!!

Thanks. I haven't read that author before. I will add it to my list.

message 6012: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Kay - I can take a look and see if any of her books are loan able on kindle if you want

message 6013: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I'm reading Board Resolution - it's been loitering on Mt TBR for a couple of years - I'm sitting at the hospital, trying not to squirm while reading

Still working on this too. You have me excited to keep reading and get over this funk.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just started Dreams of Gods and Monsters. Oh my.

Have any of you experienced the Laini Taylor effect. Happens every time. Books read immediately before or after reading something by her, lose a star. So a book which normally you would rate 4 Stars, suddenly feels like a 3 Star book.

message 6017: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Yep - I often go back and re-evaluate stars given

message 6018: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Finished Undying Desire (The Enclave, #3) by Jessica Lee I was interested in a submissive alpha male vamp but that aspect which was fine, couldn't overcome the backstory info dump at the beginning, the sheer number of powers which when push came to shove weren't useful at all, and the utter stupidity of the protagonist about 2/3 of the way in. Ugh.

message 6019: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished Rachel and the Hired Gun (Men of Defiance, #1) by Elaine Levine and continuing on this western ride with Summer Breeze (Keegan-Paxton #3) by Catherine Anderson next. I'm off today with no kiddies at home. So hopefully I can get some reading in.

message 6020: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments sorry Kay - I realized that i've bought all of Beth Williamson's books via the publisher not amazon, so they aren't loanable :(

message 6021: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments It's ok, Dee. Thanks for checking.

message 6022: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments she also writes under the name Emma Lang - but I like her BW books better

message 6023: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Hey I wanted to let you all know (bc I think there are audible members on this list - -Dee?), audible is "giving" away a $5 credit for Easter: http://www.audible.com/promo/offer/17...

message 6024: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Looks like it only works if u have your audible/amazon accounts linked which I don't - mostly because they fucked it up initially and everyone's audible stuff was on their kindle accounts and I didn't want tgat

message 6025: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Druid's Sword (The Troy Game, #4) by Sara Douglass Finished off the massive Troy Game series. Really glad I read it. I enjoyed how historical events were re-interpreted through this mythological and magical framework and how in this final book, in particular, it geared down to become more of a character piece than arch magic wielding beings.

message 6026: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished Summer Breeze (Keegan-Paxton #3) by Catherine Anderson and it was a nice not so typical historical western. The heroine in this one hasn't left her house in 5 years.

I also finished a cute YA Better off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg and next up is Hard Time by Cara McKenna which I'm so excited to read!

I hope everyone had a nice weekend!

message 6027: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Oh I can't wait to see what you think!!!

Tellulah, that series is pulling me -- I am on and off with fantasy but something seems interesting to me about it.

I am 30% in to Dreams of Gods & Monsters (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #3) by Laini Taylor and it is of course amazing. I just don't have time to read. I am irritated (for that have read it) that (view spoiler) I hate that sort of dumb tension. But otherwise I am loving it.

I am about 20% into the audio of #5 in the Kara Gillian series and still enjoying it Touch of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #5) by Diana Rowland

Let me know if you pick it up, Regina. I'm kind of surprised by how much I enjoyed it, given how arch it could be, but it was a extremely fun read.

Leea | 1437 comments Regina you're flying through the Kara Gillian series. Now I just need to finish the first book.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 173 comments listening to Reaper's Property (Reapers MC, #1) by Joanna Wylde , a bit silly but has some great love scenes. and still reading City of Bones

Yes. I'll start tonight! :)

message 6038: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Angie & Samantha, I'm 50% in to Hard Time. I don't feel like I'm reading an escape novel b/c these characters are like real people living their everyday fucked up lives. Cara McKenna always seems to write this way and I love it. I probably won't be able to read anymore until tonight.

message 6039: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'll be behind you, anyway. Good to know it's not escapism!

message 6040: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I love Cara McKenna. She is my favorite.

message 6041: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments This will be my first of hers that she has written as 'Cara McKenna.' I have read her Meg Maguire books at your rec, Regina, and I've really enjoyed them. They have a certain grit to them that is believable and not over the top.

message 6042: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I would never have read Cara if it weren't for this group. She is one of my most favorite authors that I have learned about.

I think I like After Hours and Willing Victim more than Hart Time, but I just really like them all. Unbound is written so well and so believably, the sex just wasn't my thing. But well done stuff.

I also really enjoyed her new one Her Best Laid Plans by Cara McKenna and I cannot wait for Lay It Down by Cara McKenna

Oh, I stand corrected. I read and loved Willing Victim!

message 6044: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments LOL, it is a great gateway to her. :) I was lukewarm about Don't Call Her Angel by Cara McKenna Curio (Curio, #1) by Cara McKenna

But they were well done.

This is good to know. I'm going to get into it tonight. I look forward to it.

I didn't know she wrote under another name. I really liked Willing Victim.

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments OK...supper is in the oven and I am going in with Hard Time by Cara McKenna !

message 6047: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I was able to get 25% in. How are you liking it, Samantha?

message 6048: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Picked up Kressley Cole's The Professionals (the complete story) from NG. Aside from some huge believability and WTF why are you behaving this way issues, I just keep snickering at the language used. Seriously, I'd be crying with laughter if some of this stuff was said to me.

message 6049: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments reading The Hero - this series has been hit/miss for me, but I keep trying...the whole woman on the run in this one, reminds me of the VR book...

message 6050: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Kay, were you able to read anymore of Hard Time by Cara McKenna ?

(view spoiler)
