Kelly (sisimka) Hi Bill,

I just recently read the Time Machine, after having loved the movie for a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, what a great book!

Welcome to Beyond Reality.

Bill Shears (billshears) | 4 comments Thanks, Ron. Yep, voted. Went with Triffids . I have the paperback. But that's not the only reason. Saw the movie on the big screen at a Saturday matinee as a kid. Had nightmares. goit the book and read it later, and saw the movie again too. Didn't have the same effect. Nightmares now are about real life. Trivial frights like triffids get elbowed out.

Yes. Another movie that did well by the book.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for posting your faves, I wasn't familiar with two of them so now I have new authors to check out! My current favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, Lois McMaster Bujold, Connie Willis, many old classics like Heinlein, Pohl and Sturgeon. Also newer ones like Patricia Briggs, Patrick Rothfuss.

Marty (martyjm) | 310 comments Hi, I guess I broke protocol by joining and not introducing myself.

I read mostly sci-fi and not much fantasy although I have read and enjoyed the Stephen Donaldson fantasy books, the Fire and Ice from Martin and Jordan's Wheel of Time.

I favor space opera and character driven stuff. I am not reading to improve myself when I read fiction but to enjoy myself.

I read a lot of nonfiction too and try to throw in some classics (fiction) from the canon here and there.

I'm a 50 year old community college math teacher which means I don't have near enough time for reading. I have strong opinions about books but will try to keep the expression of the negative ones mild.

I'm looking forward to reading with you all and will try to be more open minded so I can gain a new perspective.

That's a great description of why I read fiction as well, Marty. Welcome to the group!

Hi everyone! I'm an old friend of Kathi's (hi Kathi!) from various other SF/F discussion forums (Amazon, Delphi). I joined goodreads a few months ago but am only now getting around to checking out the discussions here. I'm a busy teacher and can't promise to participate in all of the monthly discussions but I will do my best!

Some of my favorite authors: Guy Gavriel Kay, Dan Simmons, George R.R. Martin, Robin Hobb, Stephen Brust (yay Brokedown Palace!).

Nice to meet you all! :)

Hi Shel, and welcome! The BOTM (Book of the Month) discussions here have been pretty lively and there's always lots of non-BOTM conversation, too, so join in when you can!

Richard (thinkingbluecountingtwo) | 155 comments Hi, my name's Richard. I'm from the UK and have been reading SF since I got hooked on Arthur C. Clarke's stories at the tender age of 11. I have read SF voraciously since then and my tastes have moved around a little, leaning more towards literary SF nowadays, but still love books stuffed full of ideas and a sense of wonder.
I haven't read much Fantasy but rate The Lord of the Rings as an all time classic.
As a married man with two children under the age of four, I don't get an awful amount of time to read at home. That said, I am fortunate enough to be a pilot for a British Airline, which gives me time down route, wide awake struggling with the time differences in various cities around the world, to catch up on some reading. My work means that I can often be found in places like 'The Tattered Cover' bookstore in Denver, gently dozing over a new book.

I'm looking forward to discussing new books and authors, and sharing different opinions and perspectives with you all.

Cheers.

Hi Richard! My husband is from Colorado and we always try to make it to the Tattered Cover when we're in Denver - such an awesome bookstore! :)

message 111: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) Name's Mike, I'm fairly new to the site, thought I'd look for some sci-fi/fantasy related groups, since that's pretty much all I read anymore.

What caught my eye here is that I've been meaning to try the Honor Harrington series for ages now, and I saw it's one of the upcoming books for the group, so that's where I'll probably jump in.

hi! I love the Harrington series and get a big kick out of Weber in general so look forward to hearing from you on it.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) My wife just gave me back the first Honor book. She couldn't get into it. How odd. I've read them twice & love them.

David Lawson | 10 comments Hi, I'm David. I was introduced to the fantasy/sci-fi genre by reading Lord Foul's Bane by Stephen R. Donaldson while in class, and just got hooked.

I found goodreads while searching for other, more recent, fantasy books a few weeks ago and have been a member ever since.

welcome. I was really drawn to this particular group by the totally democratic method, hope you enjoy it.

Brian Hello, I am Brian. I really enjoy fantasy novels and lately I have been branching out into Science Fiction. Most of my reading has focused around game spin-offs (D&D, Warhammer, Halo, etc.) however, I have read other things, but I am seeking to broaden my horizons. I really enjoy military Sci-fi, so I am going to try and check out the January read. I will hopefully talk to you all soon.

message 117: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (sisimka) Welcome to all our new members! I look forward to hearing from you in our discussion threads. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post them, we have the friendliest, most helpful membership on Goodreads! Also, feel free to message myself at any time.

For myself, I've been wanting to read On Basilisk Station for a while, so I think it's great we have so many folks excited about our January reads!

Ridan | 13 comments Hello,
New member to the group here - I really like how this is organized ;-)

My name is Susan and would love to be an author someday. I'm an English major and work for an excellent Small Press that is being very generous in my education on the "book business". My favorite genre is fantasy. Most of my sci-fi is in the classis - such as Asimov.

I look forward to the group!

Shanshad Whelan | 28 comments Hi, I'm Shan. I've been around goodreads awhile but just getting around to really touching base with a discussion board group again. Was on Amazon/Delphi boards with Shel and Kathi in the past and I'm thinking how much I miss their liveliness--made some good friends and found some good reading there.

I'm SF/F reader with an interest in children's and YA lit, since I'm a children's librarian. Lately I tend to read a lot, since my work commute is 40 minutes each way.

My husband I met on the Amazon SF and Fantasy board back in 2001. We started writing an ongoing story together online, met a year later in person for the first time and found that we rather liked each other's company. He moved to NY a few years later, proposed, and we got married in 2007. (even had a few of our SF/Fantasy discussion board friends to the wedding) Our online was completed about 3 years after we started it and clocked in at about 350 pages. Figures our courtship would consist of writing a fantasy adventure story. It'll be fun to tell the boy when he's older.

Elizabeth | 4 comments Hi! Elizabeth here. I joined in August as a treat to myself after becoming a mom for the first time in May. My first book with the group was 3 Stigmata of PE, and then I was hooked! This site is so much fun. Thank you so much for introducing me to some great new books that I otherwise would never have read! Happy reading to all :)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 487 comments Welcome Elizabeth! I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. However do you find time to read as a new mum? That time is all a bit vague to me now, but I have a feeling my reading suffered. Glad to have you in the group.

Bookbrow | 93 comments Hello All,

I am a graphic designer/illustrator living in Calgary, Canada. In the art of illustration it is important when depicting a scene that it has it's own internal logic, that makes sense, world building in other words. I think this creative aspect really drives my interest in the sci-fi genre; naturally characters and a good story are needed to be successful in any fiction. It’s magic when it all comes together.

I have been lurking about for a week and a bit, really like the Goodreads site, and this group also. I find that most of my friends tend not to read sci-fi or fantasy, so few can relate with a great book that you have just read. I read maybe 95 % genre related books during a year, occasionally visiting a classic or general fiction book, and on occasion I will read a non-fiction book, I have not listed these 5% on my books archive as I am mainly interested in the sci-fi /fantasy community here.

I have lots of favourite authors and I read on average 28 books a year (would like to read more of course); I like to read the classics as well as the new releases. I do like the chase of finding a rare or hard to find book, I love haunting used bookstores, I don't mind buying on the Internet and occasionally I will check out large box bookstores. I am pondering a basement reno to accommodate my almost overflowing small bookcase.

I am looking forward to finding new books; add new books to acquire and of course reading some novels that the group has chosen.

Cheers
BB

Phoenixfalls | 187 comments Hi all!

I'm a twenty-something unemployed L.A. native (but not an actor or otherwise at all involved in the biz, I swear!) fairly new to GoodReads. I've been reading SF/Fantasy my entire life, and some of my favorite authors are Lois McMaster Bujold, Jacqueline Carey, Robin McKinley, Patricia McKillip, Isaac Asimov, and Gordon R. Dickson. Some of my favorite books (besides books by above favorite authors) are The Count of Monte Cristo, Nobody's Son, Childhood's End, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, and The Faded Sun Trilogy. Outside of the SFF realm I also love Golden Age British mysteries and popular science books, particularly those concerning medicine and disease. I have a degree in Public Health Policy and Bioethics, but my most recent job was as a retail manager at a pet store, which might explain my excessively large menagerie. I also love to write, play piano, and acquire books at a rate that requires me to ask for bookshelves at every holiday where gifts are exchanged. (Another favorite hobby is reorganizing said bookshelves to maximize space.)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that :) I get a strange kick out of reorganizing my books. My husband and I are currently packing up half of our belongings to put in storage because we're hoping to sell our condo and need to de-clutter in order to show it to potential buyers...and all I can think of is how much fun it will be to unpack and organize the books (hopefully) in a new house!

Welcome!

Christine | 637 comments I've been lurking here for a couple months and never formally introduced myself. I am a retired primary care physician who almost never buys books. Reading the other intros, I must be in the minority as most here seem to be real book aficionados. I use my local library system and have recently gotten a Sony eReader so am trying the digital approach. I got hooked on scifi reading Heinlein followed by Bradbury, Asimov and Clarke. I frequently read the bestseller lists (especially thrillers and mysteries), but seem to find my way back to SF/F. When I'm not reading, I am training my two Irish Water Spaniels in the field and agility and caring for my now 9 m/o granddaughter. I'm almost finished reading This Alien Shore and have loved it...I've read all of the Miles books in the past so am looking forward to the next series. BTW, I live on Mercer Island in Washington state.

Nancy O'Toole (temporaryworlds) Hello everyone! My name is Nancy and I just joined a couple minutes ago. I'm pretty new to goodreads and have been looking for a book club to join. When I got a look at the April selections, I knew that this was the one for me! I've never been in a group on goodreads before, so please let me know if I do anything silly.

For some basic info on me- I'm a twenty-four-year-old full time student currently going for my Masters in Library and Information Studies at URI. My permanent address is in Maine, where I live with my fiancé (no date yet. Need to get that degree first!). I love to read, especially fantasy literature, as well as write. One of my goals for 2010 is to read more widely. I figured that joining a book club was a great way to encourage that as it may encourage me to pick up books I normally wouldn't be aware of.

Well, that's me! Is there anything in particular I should be aware of?

message 143: by Stefan, Group Founder + Moderator (Retired) (new)

Welcome Nancy! Nothing in particular to be aware of - the group has monthly group reads but we encourage discussion of anything SF&F related. The FAQ (in the second post from the top) contains the few rules we have.

Nancy O'Toole (temporaryworlds) Thanks! I read the FAQ and everything made sense to me :)

Amelia (narknon) Hi all. I was looking for the intro section and found it so I thought I'd introduce myself. I found this group and recognized a few people from the fantasy group that I've been in for a little while. This group looks really interesting with lots of good recommendations. (BTW, I envy all of you who have time to read so many books in a month. I wish I had more time to read. More than I do now anyway, lol.)

About me: my name is Amelia and I live in Utah. I've been reading ever since I can remember and it didn't take me too long to find fantasy. I remember that my librarian in elementary school would have some great recommends for me. I like sci fi, too, I just don't read as much of it.

I just recently discovered Carol Berg and have immensely enjoyed her Rai Kirah trilogy. I think it's great to have groups like this where we can discuss our love of books. This is what I miss the most from school. I majored in English and really missed those intellectual discussions. I've browsed some other random groups and am really impressed by this one and the ongoing discussions. I look forward to my participation in them when I can.
