And till now what do you think? I read it some years ago, but it wasn't like I expected. Little action and so much bla,bla..."

...I've currently paused Moby-Dick. Too slow, tedious and full of run-on sentences. I hate that.

message 202: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) with Moby Dick the problem is it's too much Ishmael not enough Ahab. The captain is the life of the party in a manner of speaking. It's a 150 page 5 star book put in 500 something pages of yes blah blah blah

message 203: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catjackson) Moving on from Dracula and Frankenstein and have been reading some of Poe's stories. Just started The Island of Dr. Moreau and will then be reading The Invisible Man. And yes, all of these are meant to go together as they are part of a MOOC on Coursera that is about sci/fi and fantasy. It's an interesting course, especially since we are reading a lot of the precursors to modern sci/fi/fantasy along with classic sci/fi/fantasy.

message 204: by Karena (new)

Karena (karenafagan) I'm doing my usual thing of reading way too many books at one time. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking which I'm finding fascinating, Stoker's Manuscript, The Secret History even though I'm having a hard time with it and an urban fantasy that I suspect I'm going to abandon.

message 205: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) I thought The Island of Dr. Moreau was very daring considering when it was written. The Invisible Man was good as well. I have been hearing alot of Quiet in multiple fgroups

I watched Susan Cain's TEDTalk about it the other day and it blew my mind. As an introvert, I am finding it to explain so much about how I felt (and to be honest, still feel) about how introverted people are treated.

message 207: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) Yea Karena were you also a bashful kid whose parents were always trying to force you into clubs and activities to " cure" shyness. Also an introvert.

Very much so. And "why do you never have any friends over?" I joke that I had to get married because otherwise I would be a complete hermit. Thank the gods for the internet though. It helps me communicate in a way I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

Not only the way we were treated as children, but look how job interviews usually go "we're looking for an outgoing, excited person for this position!"

Anyway, from one introvert to another, so far, I recommend this book. :)

message 209: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chantelle (shanti15) Thanks for the recommendation, Karena. I am also an introvert and have been wanting to read it for a while so I'll keep an eye out for it.
I am currently reading Tess of the D'Urbervilles and a memoir called Happens Every Day.

I didn't realize there was a TED talk, I'll have to check that out. I found the book fascinating and insightful.

message 211: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) I'll have to bump that book up my tbr list a bit. As a self employed dairy farmer I just don't have to deal with people. I have 5 or 6 people I do regular business with and occasional part time help but I'm sure there's a lot of adult introvert issues I'm not even aware of happening to other people. I walk 100 yards to go to work basically have no need to leave the yard except to buy parts.

I don't think i should have read these back to back. While, both are fabulous works in literature, I am on the road to depression, lol. Man, I know how to pick em.
