Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 183 comments I just finished Voyage to the Red Planet and I liked. It's not a sci-fi book "all aliens and technology", but it's a story of a vojage in the pure spirit of space exploration (or almost).

message 303: by Erika (new)

Erika (erikarae) I'm working on The Poisonwood Bible right now. It's really beautiful and interesting but for some reason it's been pretty slow-going for me so far. I thought that it would be a lighter read after spending three weeks on Burgess' Earthly Powers, which was a monster of a read that was so entirely worth it.

message 304: by Andrew✌️ (new)

Andrew✌️ (andrew619) | 183 comments I'm reading The Neverending Story (even with a few years of delay) and The Man With Two Left Feet, a collection of funny short stories.

message 305: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (jshardy) | 2 comments Just finished the Girl witha Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevelier, now into the first few pages of GoT by George R. R. Martin.

message 306: by Robert (new)

Robert Stewart (bobstewart) I've been reading The Expedition of Humphry Clinker from the 18th century. Has anyone else read Smollett? It's pretty slowly paced, and I've allowed myself to side-tracked by Uncle Fred in the Springtime and now Queen Lucia, two opposite poles of humor.

Damn, my post sounds so pretentious it could be coming from Queen Lucia. Oh, well...

message 307: by Anil (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 79 comments I have read The Adventures or Roderick Random by Smollett. I can't say I enjoyed it.

message 308: by Robert (new)

Robert Stewart (bobstewart) Anil,

Yes, I'm not sure I'll finish it any time soon. Some of the letters are genuinely humorous, others fairly monotonous.

I really think a lot of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman and thought I'd look at other works of humor from the late 18th century. But I've come to the conclusion Tristram Shandy really is unique.

I had to read a section of Gulliver's Travels for a Literature class, and I remember thinking the movie was better as well. But I hope you still enjoy the book.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 208 comments I just finished The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, I was surprisingly impressed with it! The audio version was good, too.

message 318: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Alana- I'm really into it! Unfortunately I don't read that fast. Aren't they making a movie??

I have no idea, but it's one that would either be really good and sweet, or horribly over the top and pathetic, based on the subject matter.

I recently finished One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest too. Personally, I really loved it, although the ending broke my heart. What did you think of it?

I have wanted to read this for so long! Sigh, maybe next year, I am hoping we'll have a chance to vote on it for the group....

message 325: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 2 comments *Mind Over Medicine* I forget the author's name. She is an MD. This book is listed in my books here. The book is a best-seller about the limitations of conventional medicine - when doctors can no longer "fix you." Discussed are nocebos, placebos, the hazards of negative thoughts, how being unhappy hurts your health, having a healthy lifestyle, and similar.

As usual, I have a few other books I'm dipping into as well.

message 326: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 2 comments Oops, this is supposed to be about *Classics,* In keeping with the literary flitting I alluded to in my last post, I have read some Sir Arthur Conan Doyle recently. Yes, Sherlock Holmes. While it's fun watching Sherlock in movies and on TV, I've been getting back in touch with the original stories.

message 327: by Anil (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 79 comments Carolyn, your comments don't have to be about Classics. We are just curious about what other members are reading.

Yep, Carolyn is absolutely right :) Where's Your Bookmark? is just a place for members to discuss what books that are currently reading :) You can mention Classics, modern, non-fiction, smut, whatever you would like.

Colleen Just finished Kindred by Octavia Butler. It was kind of hard for me to read. Any sci fi fans out there? I should give Ray Bradbury a try - anyone recommend a title? Almost to page 400 in Anna Karenina. I have The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier from the library - anyone here read it?

Hi. By Bradbury, I read The Martian Chronicles and I liked, so this could be a good book. Also, my friends talk to me about these books:

The Illustrated Man
Long After Midnight

but I 'haven't read yet.

message 346: by Karena (new)

Karena (karenafagan) I really want to start Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but it's utter monsterness (I'm taking this word as my own) is overwhelming me a bit. I probably just need to start this month's Persuasion though. :)

message 347: by Travis (new)

Anil (loykalina) | 79 comments Has anyone read Valmouth by Ronald Firbank?

message 350: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) Just finished Catching Fire. Wanted to read it before the film came out. It's been like a year and a half since I've read a YA book, so it was weird. Good though..

Just got Rebecca out of the library, so will start on that later today!
