Maybe this will spur them to put in better safety and security features- lights, cameras, etc.

message 1905: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Locks being left open on purpose happens often in cities - kids, drunk people etc so locks are fitted with anti tamper devices and all boaters have keys for them. But where this has happened is in the middle of nowhere really so it's surprising. Hopefully they'll put these devices on the locks around here too. I wouldn't want cameras or lights along the towpaths though as it would feel too much of an invasion and they'd be able to see in my boat. I'd have to wash up more regularly and not walk around in the nud. ;-)

message 1906: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Stephanie, great pictures! The fall colors are particularly pretty in my area this year. It usually seems like the colors change fast and the leaves fall in just a couple of weeks. So fast that there really isn't that much to enjoy, but this year it seems like it is a very gradual changing of colors and most leaves haven't dropped off yet.

@Sarah, sorry to hear about the problems on the canal. If all of the locks are put back in their proper position will the water levels go back to where they are supposed to? Is there a process of fixing everything?

And the great thing is a soon as one puppy grows up they give you another. For our program you don't even have to live in New York -they go to you.

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments Hello everyone, is being a rainy day here in Tampa, FL. My mom is doing much better thanks for asking, and my grandma that came from Venezuela 45 days ago left this morning so my heart is a little heavy with sadness, she was the one that took care of me since I was a year old ☹
School is the same, really busy to find time for reading, but always doing my best. I hope everyone had a good day, and have a great night...

PS. Sarah, Happy belated Birthday!!!

Travis - was this posted somewhere? I have just searched and cannot find the topic on GR.

I read reviews from people I follow and my friends mostly to see what they had to say about a book title. If a topic does not give enough information, I will scroll through the list of reviewers to decide if I want to add a book to my TBR. Half of the reviews I see are annoying but many are excellent and I appreciate those.

message 1910: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am glad you are not affected by the vandalism, Sarah, and I hope it gets fixed quickly so that there is not more damage, especially from the stranded boats. If the tow paths are flooded, how are people going to get help?

message 1911: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments How I did it Cherie was clicked on random (sort of) people and on their profile page in top left corner it will say maybe #176 top reviewer or something even though the lists are only top 100 and are by country. I say sort of random because I did know some people who are top reviewers but not necessarily their country. I didn't think to check his but I am pisitive Jason Kourvo? Spelling? Would be a top reviewer click on him and you'll see it top left if its there and click on it and the whole top 100 will show up. Kat Stark is like #2 which most everyone sees her updates sooner or later. Thereare many members of ylto from smaller European countries that are top reviewers but I don't want to name names of people who may read this thread.

message 1912: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Jason Koivo is not a top reviewer I was shocked. US, Canada, UK are the hardest countries to find someone you know making the cut but. Your friend Alejandro, Costa Rica is a top 5 reviewer. Again the small country thing.

message 1913: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @KimeyDian - if all the locks are set right, there are pumps which can be ran to pump water back in to/out of those sections to restore the water levels. However, there are a couple pumps which are not functioning at the moment which is why this has also become a much bigger problem. Generally, sections are closed off to boats while repairs are done but that means boats aren't able to move around much. Fingers crossed those who are stranded are so near a water point and waste station.

@Cherie - While the towpaths are flooded in parts, it is not massively I'm guessing. A good pair of wellies would get you through although I'm guessing it would probably be a bit dangerous. I think there are people up that way helping those stuck. A lot of boaters have canoes so perhaps they are being put in to use. Who knows!

@Joan - I live in the UK but we do have a Guide Dog Association here. I knew someone as a kid who raised them. However, I am way too soft and I don't think I could do it. I'd get too attached and wouldn't want to give it up even with knowing you'd be given another puppy straight after. And I'm guessing the association probably wouldn't be happy with handing over a puppy to a couple who have no fixed address.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments After 2 weeks of taking tylenol, tea and honey and waking up a little sicker than the day before I'm beginning to think maybe a trip to the doctor is a good idea. My lymphnodes are beginnng to feel like tusks growing out of my neck. Maybe it is more than a simple cold. August of 2008 was the last time I went to the Dr for being sick. I was shooting for at least a 10 year run. I go regularly to the Dr for my lungs or getting banged up or back pain not letting me move. But for being sick almost never.

Thanks, KimeyDiann! Seems like the colors are lasting here as well :)
It rained yesterday and is raining again today :( hopefully the rain doesn't knock too many leaves down. There is a big hill on the small lake at our apartment complex and it is so pretty right now! Hoping to take some family pictures but will have to see if the leaves cooperate and are still colorful by then :)

message 1919: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Stephanie, it has been raining here since Saturday and amazingly it hasn't knocked a lot of the leaves off. But it has been a slow steady rain and not a hard driving rain.

I saw a few rays of sunshine this morning and it was glorious! I think today there is only a small chance of rain, then more rain tomorrow, clear Friday, and then 90% chance Saturday. I've been keeping a watch on the forecast because I'm planning an estate sale/yard sale at my mother-in-law's house this weekend and I'm afraid the rain may ruin those plans.

Bella | 502 comments Hope you feel better soon, Travis. We just got over our colds last week. Does not bode well for this flu season for us to be sick this early.

We went to this Korean shopping center yesterday- ate lunch. They have a market that has a kimchi and Korean side dish deli. All fresh. We're going to go back; the kids were just too tired to shop yesterday.

My husband and I played bingo last night- my husband won $250 total. I won nothing, but it was nice to get out of the house.

message 1922: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thanks everyone. I'm off to Dr as soon as I finish lunch. Hopefully I get there we have rain with 35-50mph sustained winds with 70-80mph gusts. Maybe I should steal my wifes red shoes in case I need to be doing some "theres no place like home"

Sarah | 18550 comments I have a good image of you Travis in your wife's red shoes. Are you any good at walking in high heels? ;-)

message 1926: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I am not good at walking in high heels. Probably would be at er with a broken ankle. They say it is respiratory infection. Got an antibiotic a nasal spray to dry up sinuses and a pill which they made me believe was like throat spray and will numb throat. Must do a little more aince there is a do not drive heavy equipment warning on it. Challenge accepted. Pretty sure if I survived driving equipment the week I was on vicatin and another either pain killer or miscle relaxer I can handle anything. Cows have to eat no matter how heavy of drugs they put me on. Of course my pain was so extreme The side effects were quite minimal anyway

message 1927: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments There were a few places in the city when all of a sudden a 20ft wide looked about 1ft thick river of leaves was going across road. And you couldn't see an end it was like a leaf freight train

Any advice on where in the UK tourists should go canal boating? We have long meant to do some of the canals while in England - a sort of family member used to have a canal boat up in the county that includes Blackpool. I really only know Dorset.

message 1929: by Joan (new)

Joan Water meadows - is the phrase my Dorset family uses for flood plains - I think it is sounds much nicer.

message 1930: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I hope you start feeling better soon, Travis. I know it's impossible to you to have a break from work, but hopefully your cows behave and don't give you extra work and problems. :)

message 1931: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments @Joan - no canals down Dorset way unfortunately. Up North there are tones. I'm obviously really biased and think the Kennet & Avon is the best canal as that is where I live. It runs through some very historic towns and cities and is a canal one of it's kind (it's a canalised river). It does get very busy though. The Oxford canal is also one of my favourites, it's quieter and is much easier to navigate as all the locks are singular. The canal takes you off in to the middle of nowhere with some spectacular scenery. So I guess it depends what you want - countryside or historic towns/buildings etc.

@Travis - I'm pleased you have got what you need to be on the mend. I would trust my partner under the influence to drive far better than I could sober because he's so used to driving. I'm guessing that's the same as you. If anyone can drive a big bit of machinery while under the influence of medication then you can. Just take it easy - you don't want another trip to the doctors!

message 1932: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I feel great this morning. Just feels like a minor cold now. Main thing was I actually got to sleep last night. Especially the last 4 nights I been coughing keeping myself and my wife up most the night. All that chest congestion had me about drowning instead of sleeping. Didn't have a single coughing fit last night. Even if the meds need more time to fully knock it out of my body just getting a good night sleep makes all the difference in the world.

message 1933: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Good to hear you are feeling much better Travis. It's amazing how a good night sleep can make all the difference.

message 1934: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments That's great, Travis. I'm glad to know you are feeling better. Also, it's always good to confirm you are using the right medication. Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but I'm always worried about wrong diagnoses.

message 1935: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That is true Sandra. They do have to work a bit when orescribing me because I have a lot of medication allergies. And that list is ever growing. Everything they gave me this time they could give me in the future and maybe that time I'll be allergic. Once I react once then thats it I'm allergic forever. But I might take sonething 1000 times and on the 1001 time I'm allergic. We keep a lot of benadryl and steroidbthat starts with p on hand. Geez I should know what thats called its so common. Anyway I think it keeps them on their toes when prescribing stuff for me

message 1936: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Prednosone what I was trying to think of. Actually when I got to pharmacy they told me they had to call Dr because their records show I am allergic to one I was supposed to pick up. Thank goodness for modern technology. I can't keep track of everything. I looked at the scripts and nothing jumped out at me.

message 1937: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments It's been a while since I caught up with everyone.

@Travis I'm glad to hear you're feeling better and that the meds are working for you. I'm allergic to a couple pain meds, but have so many food and skin allergies. It sucks when you don't know how your body is going to react to something.

@Sarah, I'm sorry to hear about the problems on the canal. Do they know yet if it was deliberate? It's a shame there's so much destruction!

Re: Reviews. I actually only read reviews after I've read something, mostly when I'm feeling ambivalent about a story, or if I really disliked it (misery loves company). If a group member posts a review in the forums, I'm likely to read that though. When deciding on a book I'm on the fence about, I mainly pay attention to my friend's ratings. I just don't like to have my opinion prejudiced. I've done that with movies too many times.

I haven't been doing anything too much. I'm working 9 hour days, which isn't anything, really. Mainly, I'm enjoying the calm before the storm of our remodel hits the office, which I'm predicting is next week. I will need to be onsite at our location during programming and testing of the new software system, which I'm excited about. If it works the way it's supposed to, it will be a hefty upgrade, and ultimately, lessen wait-times and make us more efficient. Beyond that I'm just trying to get the last of my October reading in!

Oh, I did meet my annual goal of reading 90 books, though! Yay, me!

Yes, I love to read Alejandro's reviews. I do see a lot of Jason's reviews and comments. Many reviews, I may not agree with, but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I only follow a few. The rest I see because other people have liked them. There are days that I do not read the News Updates at all.
