Hey all, sorry I haven't been around much. How are things going?

Angie Elle (angieelle) I'm currently reading my first Anne Gracie novel, The Autumn Bride (Chance Sisters, #1) by Anne Gracie . It's enjoyable so far.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments Angie Elle, I've been wanting to try Anne Gracie.

I'm glad this title is going well for you. Maybe I'll give it a try!

I remember that book! It had more of a theme of sisterhood than a romance, but it was enjoyable. I have been meaning to read the others in the series and would love to read one with you if you decide to continue the series!

message 155: by Angie Elle (last edited Jun 20, 2016 11:05AM) (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) Yes, it definitely has a sisterhood theme. If you're looking for something heavy on the romance, Andrea, this one won't fit the bill. That's actually a very small part of the story. I think a lot of this one is setting us up for the rest of the series. But I do really like it.

I've been wondering too. I've tried to Google it, but so far nothing comes up.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments There were a couple of male authors who wrote under women's names in the 70s and perhaps 80s.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments FYI, The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer The Masqueraders, Georgian Romance by Georgette Heyer is in KU right now.

If you are a KU subscriber and want to read it, do so soon.

A title's inclusion in KU may not be permanent.

I have not read this title. When Georgette Heyer fans talk about our favorites of her romances, this is not mentioned in the discussion.

Bree Verity (breeverity) I have a question.
Loads of commentators on HR are bemoaning that authors are basically writing contemporaries, but just putting them in long dresses.
What, in your opinion, makes for a GOOD HR?

I'll start: LANGUAGE. I read one where, while dancing with the heroine, a suitor 'scoped the room'. So unimpressed.

Bree wrote: "I have a question.

This is unfortunately true. This is why I mainly stick to the authors I am already familiar with. As for the question of what is a good HR IMO, well, to me it really depends. Sometimes I don't care if it's historically inaccurate, if the heroine is too modernized, and so on and so forth, just as long as it's not TOO ridiculous. Most of the time I enjoy a book based on how the author's writing is, the plot and its twists, how well the characters are developed, etc.

Charlotte Brothers (goodreadscomcharlottebrothers) | 10 comments I wanted to recommend a self-publishing writer that has really impressed me!
If you like light and humorous regency and Victorian romances like Maya Rodale, I would suggest you try a book by Bianca Blythe. I've read "Runaway Wallflower" and now am nearing the end of "How to Capture a Duke".

I'm still busy discovering even some famous writers' books and styles and it depends on how light and how funny you like them! Have you read any by Maya Rodale? Stephanie Laurens? Sarah MacLean? There is a little hub of self-published writers, and some are better than others, but they are called the Bluestocking Belles
http://bluestockingbelles.net/. They tend to have light reads, not real sexy, but pleasant. Georgette Heyer is classic. Intelligent funny, like a lesser Austen. Must love banter and no sex scenes.

Do you have any suggestions? Are you a new reader or have read all the famous ones and are looking for more obscure recommends?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments Black Sheep by Georgette Heyer is full of banter between the h/H.

Thank you Charlotte, I have been reading historical romance for quite sometime and read lots of them, so I am always looking for something new, I really love the laugh out loud novels, more than the dark drama ones.

This is an old post I see, but I'd put in a plug for Jude Morgan which is a pen name for Tim Wilson.
"A Little Folly" is the only one I've read so far, but it was excellent, so very witty and intelligent. It could have been written by Gaskell or Austen.

@Carla, Sooo...I read "How to Capture a Duke" also by Bianca Blythe and enjoyed it (but not as much as "Runaway Wallflower"). I was just about to warn you off time and money spent for "The Perfect Fiance" but see that it was a freebie prequel anyway:). Maybe it was her first! Haven't read "A Rogue to Avoid" yet.
I found a new fav- the Brothers Sinister series by Courtney Milan. I just read "The Heiress Effect" book two. And "wow"!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments Anyone want a copy of Katherine by Anya Seton? I'll mail it gratis anywhere in continental US.

I gave this 3-stars, but everyone on my flist who read it gave 5-stars.

This book written in the 50s was/is highly regarded for the author's formidable historical research and first-rate writing.

The writing is really good, I just had some problems with some details of the heroine actions etc. also, I was " spoiled" because I already read a nonfiction of her life.

This book is based on reall people. If you don't know who Katherine Swynford, later Duchess of Lancaster was, see this blurb of a historical biography that was written decades after this novel of her romance and life as mistress of Prince John of Lancaster. Read this blurb Mistress of the Monarchy: The Life of Katherine Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster. See the blurb for this book to see who she was.

If you want this book/novel, of fiction Katherine, live in continental US, send a pm with your address.

A wonderful book. I've re-read my copy often.

Although it focuses on the relationship between Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt, it is more historical fiction than historical romance.

I agree that Seton's research is fantastic and the writing is excellent. The details of Katherine's life were fascinating.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments You are right!

It's more HF rather than HR.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments A question for folks who live in the US:

What are you doing about the solar eclipse for Monday, August 21st?

The website "Vox" has a tool where you can enter your zip code to find out what you can see of the eclipse and the peak time to view it. Yesterday I put in the zip code for my job as I expect to be at work. From my work location 80% of the sun will be obscured and the peak time to see it is at around 2:45 pm EST.

Yesterday I ordered from AMAZON some special glasses that will clip over my eyeglasses so I can view the eclipse. I'm going to ask my supervisor to let me take lunch from 2:15 -3:00 so I can be off of the service desk so I can see the eclipse.

Public libraries around the country are providing free glasses for people to view the eclipse. I'm afraid these won't work for me since I wear corrective lenses, so I ordered gear that will clip on my corrective lenses.

message 197: by Gio (new)

Gio Listmaker (giohumanistlistmaker) Thanks for the tip about the glasses and the libraries.

Don't forget to put your zip code into Vox so you can see the peak time to view it.
