I do get both Lincoln and Washington off. I work for a local government agency and it's in the contract. I think the other presidents should have days too. How about Polk, or Tyler, or Fillmore. Don't they deserve a day? They must have done something worth celebrating. ;)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have finished my second book Splintered by A.G. Howard . I gave it a 4 star rating because it wasn't perfect by any means but it was a really enjoyable read nonetheless and I highly recommend it.

I am now starting book #3 which is Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris which is also (rather helpfully) my D read for the alphabet challenge.

Snoozie Suzie I completely agree with you, I think we should get St George's Day off.

Janice (jamasc) | 60006 comments I think I need two or three hot rum toddies. Maybe 4.

I've had a rough day. First, MacAfee crashed my computer again. This latest upgrade of their software doesn't like older versions of Windows. I have XP. Then, I was late for a meeting (I hate being late). And lastly, one of my clients' employees growled at me. Is there a full moon?

message 207: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments My experience of walking through London on St George's Day around the West End was that most people take the day off anyway. I couldn't for the life of me work out why there were so may people hanging out of pubs and men yelling at me.

Then I saw all the St George's flags hanging off all the window sills and the penny dropped.

I think you should have St George's Day off, but in the interest of fairness for the "United Kingdom" you need to have St Andrew's Day, St David's Day and St Patrick's Day off too.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments I am indeed. Only 80pp in.

The vamps are a bit different from the show, but nothing I hate yet. I have skipped all the imagination of characters as I love the casting in the show. Except Bill. Bill in my mind in this book is actually good looking unlike the show (different strokes for different folks I know).

I'm liking Sookie though. She's more intelligent in the book. However, more prudey. And possibly homophobic. I'm hoping there is someone to fill my favourite character void though.

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments Oh, my sweet Yorkie Sadie loved the Westminster Dog Show. She would jump up to the screen and click her back heels together when a really fine dog came on the screen. She loved the big dogs; ) I think she thought she was a really big dog.

Sadie also loved the rodeo. Bull riding was her favorite event. LOL!
She jumped and clicked her heels for them, too. So funny and cute. She would literally wear herself out.
I lost her two years ago this month. I still miss her so much!

She was 17 when she died. A little old lady of a dog.

Fortunately, I was the Alpha dog. Got that established when she was a puppy. The vet always wanted me back in the exam room with her.

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments Beulah charges the screen when there are animals on. Good thing the TV is up high.

Haven't read anything since my interview. Too busy filling people in. Now might get a quick read in after debrief with the hubby who has an interview tomorrow for a job in yet another city (this is nuts--would love to know where we will live next year at this time).

I know you are exhausted from all the tension though. Good luck to your husband tomorrow.

Blessings to you and your husband.

Beulah sounds like a sweetheart. ; ) You do have to keep the tv up high when there are animals in the house! lol

message 226: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4544 comments Sounds like Sadie had a fun, long life, Connie.
How does Beulah change the channel, Beth? Mine only can do that when she sits on the clicker. And looks surprised!!
We've had 2 dogs before Latka, who lived long happy lives. We still talk about them and miss them. Both were Queens of the house.

message 227: by Ava Catherine (last edited Feb 12, 2013 09:07PM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments We had a cocker spaniel who was so sweet and docile she would never have thought she was the queen of anything. I adored her because she was so humble. And gorgeous. Everywhere I took her people stopped me and wanted to know where I got her. She lived to be 15. My dogs live very long lives. ; )
I have never met a more gentle or kinder dog than Penny. She was perfect for my son when he was growing up.

Roz, I understand when you say that you talk about the dogs you have lost and miss them. They are members of your family, and they have their own personalities.
That is so funny that your baby sits on the remote and changes the channel and then looks surprised. I think Beth said her dog 'charges' the screen. I am thinking he might want to attack the animals, but Beth can tell us if I am wrong in my assumption. It sounds so cute.

I see that Banana Joe won the Westminster Dog Show. He is a cutie. ; )

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I love reading all of the posts, but my hot toddy and I are going to bed.

I took dinner to Amy and the boys tonight. Amy is feeling better. Ryan let her sleep while he played quietly. She is lucky he does not get into things. Her oldest used to climb up onto the fridge to get into things. He used the drawers as steps.

I started my 3rd book, From Baghdad, With Love A Marine, the War, and a Dog Named Lava by Jay Kopelman when I got home tonight.

@ Pets. I have not had a puppy for many, many years and my last cat was almost 19 years old before she went to Kitty Heaven. Now, I have parrots who will probably outlive me. One is approx 29
- I got her when she was 3. The other is 25 - he picked me when he was 4 months old.

Night all...

Alexandra (alex2911) | 678 comments Good morning everyone! I hope you´ll have a nice day!

@Connie, I am sorry to hear about Sadie. We have lost "Vera" a couple of years ago. She also was an alpha dog. The funny thing was that the couh was hers and whenever we had guests and they would dare to sit on the couch, she would sit in front of them - just watching - until they asked "what is wrong" :-). #
Now we have "Emma", she is a beagle and a former lab dog, she did not know about anything when she came out of the lab (no grass, no sky, nothing - that was so sad) as she has just spent her life in a small cage until then but now she has lots of fun in her little doggy life.

Sounds pretty promising then! I am only 42 pages in but I quite like it so far. I have only seen 2 episodes of the tv show so I don't really have much to go on when it comes to comparing the characters in the book to how they appear in that but I agree with you about Bill. I think he is supposed to be good-looking and for me personally, the guy who plays him in the show doesn't quite fit the bill in that sense either (pardon the pun!). I like Sookie too, I think she is quirky. All in all it's a pretty good start and I am looking forward to reading the rest of it.

Bill in the TV show just looks... slimy. And not in the way that I usually say people look slimy (you know, those slightly oily looking guys who you know are trying to manipulate everyone to get the best for them?). He has an almost green tinge to him that makes him look like he's crawled out of an egg or something. This Bill doesn't.

It's an easy read and I am quite enjoying it. It'll be really good to know what you think as someone who hasn't seen much of the story. I'm anticipating stuff too much. I think I need to relax into the story.

I just met Eric (not sure if you would have met him if you only watched 2 episodes) and I am in my happy place for a while. As we have had some hunky men before, let me introduce you all to the gorgeous Swede who will be in my imagination for a little while.

No, I don't recognise him from the show (unless he was there and I wasn't paying attention) but he is one smoking hot guy!

Lol, I know what you mean about Bill having a green tinge to him. It looks he is sick or something. I know he is meant to be a vampire and all but it looks a bit odd to me.

I will let you know what I think as I get further into the story. I always try to read a book before seeing a film/tv adaptation because if the film/show is not very good it kind of puts me off reading the book which is a shame because the book is often a lot better than the show would have you believe. I think the only exception was when I saw the 2009 film 'Dorian Gray' before I read the actual book.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought bill was gross in the show. Eric is so worth watching for though.

I have read the first 4 books in the series and watched the first 2 seasons of the show, but all in all I think I enjoyed the first one the most. After a while Sookie got really annoying to me and everyone else just either seemed stupid or whiny, so I took a break.
