Jackie, do you think Reiki and the herbs would work for osteoarthritis of the knee? My husband has gotten shots but after 6-9 months it wears off. Next step would be surgery, unless the insurance allows another round of shots.
Linda

Peconic Bay is pretty.
That was a long route to get to the Great South Bay. Bravo for Eddie to cruise along the Hudson River. Its an adventure and an accomplishment!

Thanks, Jackie. I'll be interested to learn more when I talk to you.
Several years ago, I went to Water Slide World by myself and had a great time. The cost wasn't too bad because I paid the Senior price for the ticket. Best part was floating in the Lazy River, although I enjoyed experiencing the Wave Pool and the slides too. Hope you have a good time there today!

Linda, Eddie was accustomed to cruising the length of Hudson River. He originally kept his 16' wooden lapstrake boat at a Marina in Hastings-on-the Hudson during the 1950's. That's where we spent our courting days. Below is a link to a thumbnail of us and our kids as we cruised in NYC Harbor with the Twin Towers behind us in the 1970s:

(Click on the thumbnail for a larger photo.
We even cruised the Hudson up to Albany when I was expecting our first child. Years later, with a family of 4 boys, we spent a week cruising up the Hudson,through the Champlain Canal and through the locks to Mallet's Bay on Lake Champlain.
We spent a lot of time on the Hudson River... and on any water we could get to. :)

It's called "Tight Quarters on Big Waters". :)

It can help. Most of our pharmaceuticals come from plants, herbs and algae, why not go to the source, instead of putting harmful and unnecessary chemicals into our bodies. The pharmaceutical companies are not in business to cure any of us, only to maintain our ailments. That just doesn't work fo rme.
I'll look up info on the herbs which you can get a Pure & Simple in Glens Falls and I can give the # of my Reiki practitioner.

Jackie, yes I'd be interested in your Reiki practitioner's number, and will visit Pure & Simple.
I have osteoporosis and drs prescribed Boniva. Took one pill had several bad reactions. So, the dr then prescribed Actinol (sp?). Do they really think I'd put that pill in my mouth after taking Boniva - and both drugs have the same side affects and are both bisphosonates? Hardly!
I'm doubling up on my calcium intake of foods. Exercising more (trying to anyhow).

I read an article not long ago that it only takes 10 - 15 minutes a day, but many kids aren't getting that amount. Hard to believe. We all get plenty of sunshine every day.

I wish I had started drinking skim milk years ago. My bones would probably be stronger today.
I've never tasted goat's milk. Is it very different from cow's milk?

Also, goat milk tends to flavor from what they eat more easily. It tastes different to start, but if they eat any wild garlic/onions, the milk tastes awful. Not even chocolate can hide it. I used to hate it when they'd get into a patch of it. For days the milk tasted awful, but Mom wouldn't toss it. 'Waste not, want not' was her motto. Yuck!
Goats are more fun than cows to have around though. They can be horrible pests & tend to eat whatever they shouldn't, but they're smaller & more intelligent. Nannies smell good & the kids are just adorable. Lots of fun to play with.
Billies are horrible. They pee on themselves to smell manly. We never kept one around, but my aunt used to have a billy. One of our jobs was to tie him out & put him back into his pen. When I was about 8 or 10, she was washing dishes & sent me out to put him in. She watched me walk by leading him to his pen. Then she saw him running back out to the lawn with me surfing behind him on my belly.
Then saw me trudging back to the pen with the rope over my shoulder, dragging him. Then he was running back out to the lawn with me skiing behind him. After several repetitions of this, she was laughing so hard she broke a dish. That sobered her up enough to come out & give me a hand. She still tells that story & laughs about it.
Several years later, I used to repeat this comedy routine with Sara, one of our Black Angus heifers. At least I got to eat her. I enjoyed every steak & burger, too. I never cared much for goat & don't know anyone that would eat an old billy. Some like young ewes or wethers (castrated male), but some folks like liver, too. No accounting for tastes.

LOL Great story, Jim! Wish there were a video of those skirmishes of you with the goat and you with the heifer.
I think I'll stick to cow's milk. :)

Yeah, Jim, I'd have liked to see you and the Billie too, maybe you can do a re-enactment for our entertainment, LOL

Goats milk is good when it isn't flavored by onions. Some things sweetened the milk. Not sure what. Knowing goats, it could have been Mom's beet patch. They're escape artists & were welcome to the beets as far as I was concerned. I remember Mom squirting milk into my mouth when I was little, direct from the goat. It was a fun game.

That's a great memory, Jim.
BTW, You've told us about your Jack Russell terriers. I now have had a first-hand taste of the breed. We're currently babysitting our son's dog, Mocha, who is part Jack Russell and part Dachshund. She looks mostly like a Dachshund, but I suspect that a great part of her lively personality comes from her Jack Russell DNA. She's a devil !
She snoops everywhere, climbs around every piece of furniture, and is an amazing jumper. When she jumps onto the sofa, she actually sails through the air! Her hind legs are short, but they're like tightly-wound springs. And she's a barker. Her barks have a high irritating sound.
Since we're also babysitting 3 other dogs (besides our own), we ourselves are "going to the dogs". LOL Having 5 dogs in the house is quite a challenge, especially when most of them are only visiting and not used to the surroundings. Actually, they're not too bad when they quiet down. :)
Excerpts from Wiki:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Wikipedia encyclopedia online :
DACHSHUND: The dachshund is a short-legged, elongated dog breed of the hound family. Dachshunds are playful, known for their propensity for chasing small animals, birds, and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. Many dachshunds are stubborn, making them a challenge to train.
JACK RUSSELL TERRIER : The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, principally white-bodied, smooth- or rough-coated terrier that has its origins in fox hunting. Jack Russells tend to be extremely intelligent, athletic, fearless, and vocal dogs. It is not uncommon for these dogs to become moody or destructive if not properly stimulated and exercised, as they have a tendency to bore easily and will often create their own fun when left alone to entertain themselves.
Their high energy and drive make these dogs ideally suited to a number of different dog sports such as flyball or agility.
My uncle had Dachshunds all my life. They're very prone to back problems, unfortunately. Gus, his last dog, used to love to go after groundhogs in their dens. I can't imagine what a cross between them would be - something like the Tasmanian Devil from the WB cartoons, I'd guess!
Yes, 5 dogs is a pain & a challenge, even if they all belong to the same pack, as our 5 do. We really don't need that many full time, but it just sort of worked out that way. Munchkin might not be with us much longer though. He's not able to get on the couch all the time & isn't eating well in the mornings. Being 18, that's not surprising. He still seems happy & perky, though.
Friday night, it was the neighbor's mare from 4 houses, about a 1/2 mile down the street. Apparently a tree came down across his back fence line & she wandered out. She made her way through the woods until she saw our geldings & started flirting with them. Erin got her & brought her around to the front, which is quite a hike, so I walked her back down the road to his house. She's a nice mare & recently lost her foal. It died 4 days after being born.
He was funny when he returned the halter & shank Erin put on his mare. He apologized & said, "It just makes you want to stake her out with a 'For Sale' sign on her, doesn't it?" He helped Margaret look for our pony, Speedy, when he slipped out once, so we were happy to return the favor, even if it was the second time. These things happen. A bit of a pain, but the neighbors just past him have over 100 goats & a couple of dozen donkeys. It's a real pain when their fence gets broken & it has a few times in the past couple of years.
Last night, another neighbor from a mile or two down the road showed up. Her son is running for Sheriff next year & she's putting out the word already. She's about our age, 50's, a nice lady. She saw my wooden bowls & I wound up meeting her at her grandmother's house to get some White Oak for more bowls this morning. Her grandmother is over 100 & still lives alone way back in the woods where she was born & raised. Spry old lady.
Wiki does mention that there is some controversy about the "hound" classification.
It says:
"Many dachshunds, especially the wire-haired sub type, may exhibit behavior and appearance that are similar to that of the terrier group of dogs."
It also says:
"Part of the controversy is due to the fact that the dachshund is the only certifiable breed of dog to hunt both above and below ground."
Your "Tasmanian Devil" analogy fits perfectly! LOL
Give Munchkin a scratch for me.
This is the first time in my life I haven't had and dogs, my last two died within a month of each other only this summer. The younger one first, she was 14, and so crippled with arthritis the shots and medicines didn't do a bit of good anymore. :( The little one, a Chihuahua was 17. He'd had a dicky heart for years, and I think loosing his partner was more than he could bear. Now I only have the cats. Oldest 16, youngest about 5 years old.
It's rough losing pets, they are family.
My goodness... horses, donkeys, goats... quite an assortment. You're in some nice farmland. Sounds like you have some friendly neighbors too.
We don't get that type of animal wandering around here (at our summer place near Lake George), but sometimes we see deer in the yard when it's quiet. They live in the woods nearby. In fact there's a "deer crossing" sign in front of our house. One time I saw a huge turtle crossing our yard; it came out of the marsh nearby. Another rare time we saw what looked like a bobcat walking through the marsh near our yard. Another time I saw a fox during the daytime strolling up the street. I suspect he wasn't well. Occasionally we see wild turkeys too.
Lately, the newspapers have reported a moose wandering about near Glens Falls. See the article at: ====>
http://www.poststar.com/articles/2009...
Excerpt: Moose that are spotted in this area are probably traveling, Winchell said. "This is the main corridor they use when they are migrating from Vermont to the Adirondacks,"
I hate to see moose around here because if you hit them while you're driving, you're dead.
About that spry old 100 year old lady living alone in the back woods... I wonder what the secret of her longevity is.
My condolences, Pontalba. I know what that's like. When you lose a pet, there's a big hole in your life for a long time.
Sorry to hear of your loss. I had a dog I loved, from when I was 11 to 28, I was devastated by his loss. It took me 15 years to get over it and be able to get another dog, who will, one day, break my heart all over again. Such is the testament of a dog's love, that we knowingly break our hearts for them.
You've all probably heard the Rudyard Kipling poem with the lines:
"Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear."
It seems so apropos here. The complete poem can be seen at: ====>
Years ago, I discovered the above two lines engraved on a plate in an antique store. I bought the plate. Years after that, someone at an online bulletin board told me that the lines were from the Kipling poem (seen at the above link). It seems to say it all.
The doctor is amazed at what good shape the guy is in and asks, 'How do you stay in such great physical condition?'
I'm Scottish and I am a golfer,' says the old guy, 'and that's why I'm in such good shape. I'm up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a wee glass of whiskey, and all is well.'
'Well,' says the doctor, 'I'm sure that helps, but there's got to be more to it. How old was your Dad when he died?'
'Who said my Dad's dead?'
The doctor is amazed. 'You mean you're 80 years old and your Dad's still alive. How old is he?'
'He's 100 years old,' says the old Scottish golfer. 'In fact he golfed wi' me this morning, and then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had anither wee dram and that's why he's still alive. He's Scottish and he's a golfer, too.'
'Well,' the doctor says, 'that's great, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. How about your Dad's dad? How old was he when he died?'
'Who said my grandad's dead?'
Stunned, the doctor asks, 'You mean you're 80 years old and your grandfather's still living! Incredible, how old is he?'
'He's 118 years old,' says the old Scottish golfer.
The doctor is getting frustrated at this point, 'So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?'
'No. Grandad couldnae go this mornin' because he's getting married today.'
At this point the doctor is close to losing it. 'Getting married?? Why would a 118 year-old guy want to get married?'
'Who said he wanted to?'
Thank you all, we can only do the best we can at the time. And thanks for the poem and site Joy, really neat. :)
Jim, love your story. /grinning/
Jim, love your story. /grinning/
One day, an old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders some coffee.
After sitting there for a while, he yells to the waiter, 'Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?'
The bar immediately falls absolutely silent. In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says,
'Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things:
1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat.
2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.
3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate.
4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weightlifter.
5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.
'Now, think about it seriously, Mister. Do you still wanna tell that joke?'
The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head, and mutters...
'Nope...not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times.'
A woman driving out West sees an old Indian squaw walking and asks her if she wants a ride. The old squaw gets into the car. Despite the driver's attempts to start a conversation, the old squaw remains silent, looking intently at everything in the car. Then she asks the woman what is in the brown bag on the seat. The driver says: It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband. The old squaw remains silent for a while and then responds: Good trade.
Heh, love them both.
I think maybe that cowboy is in at least 5 different pieces though by now..... :)
Eric and Brittny invited me to go see it with them last night, but I wanted to read the book first. They loved it. And Eric asked me how long TTTW is, bcause he's considering reading it after me. Now THAT'S a miracle!
I had ordered TTTW at the same time as 2012 but this took a long time getting here. It must be requested a lot due to the release of the movie. I had it on my list for a couple of years now, but never found it cheap enough to buy. With the movie out, I wanted to read it right away. I'll rent it when it comes out. Rachael McAdams, who starred in The Notebook, is in TTTW and I really like her. I'm sure I'll be done with the book quickly so maybe I can make it to the theater. Either way, theater or rental, doesn't realy matter to me.
I'm on the waiting list for _The Time Traveler's Wife_ at our library. I'm sure there's a long list of people on the list ahead of me, waiting for the book. Guess the movie made it popular again. It was published in 2004.
The release of the movie made it imperative that I do not wait any longer. If it weren't for the movie, I could have waited years for it become available at the library book sales.
Today my online library records show that the audio of _The Time Traveler's Wife_ has been shipped to the library for me. It should arrive soon. Now that I have temporarily lost my mobility because of my bad knee, I'm enjoying my audio books even more, as well as my hard cover books and my Netflix films. I have an app't today to discuss surgery on my knee with the orthopedist.
Good luck with your knee. Who are you going to?
Thanks Jackie, Jim, Werner, and Linda for the wishes for my bad knee. The doctor recommended that instead of surgery at this time, he's going to try another kind of treatment, since the cortisone hasn't seemed to work. So now I'm waiting for approval from Medicare. Meanwhile, I'm taking it real easy!
I'll post about the movies in the movie thread.
Linda, those shots sound similar to the shots I'm going to get. Good to know they work.
I'm so glad you have other options, Joy.
Says: "As dark and twisted as it is tender and hilarious."
Let's you read an excerpt - going to do right now! :)
They didn't work on my right arm (wrist & elbow) which has some kind of repetitive stress injury that no one has figured out. The arm is fine, unless I do something repetitive like nailing in a couple of squares of shingles. Then nothing helps it but rest.
They also didn't work on my left index finger. I had to have surgery & that one turned out not to be a joint (where the pain was) but one of the tendons had to be removed after a circular saw almost took my hand off. The tendon was catching at the joint.
I hope it works out for you, Joy. It just depends on what the issue is, though.
Jim, both my elbows are wonky from repetitive stress to them, I found something that did help me at least. Christopher's Complete Tissue & Bone ointment, I massaged it in and then wrapped the elbow in saran wrap, overnight if possible, and in a week or so, it relieved most of the pain. I still have to be careful, but it was the only thing that helped me. My elbow laughs at cortisone shots. :)
Sorry your knee is giving you so much trouble Joy, I know that's miserable. I hope the treatment works fast.
Oh, I also started wearing elbow braces. Helped tremendously.
We visit Ferd's Bog whenever we go to Limekiln (NYS campsite). http://www.nybirds.org/Articles/ferds...
A Gray Jay flew within a few feet of us, then came even closer - and put his head to one side than another - observing us. Looked up the bird and read they are curious birds! The picture in my bird book did not resemble this bird at all. Had the Gray Jay looking more like a chickadee.
The Hairy Woodpecker and Downy Woodpecker are amongst my favorites.
Yesterday my husband and kids helped me get to the Lake George camping islands for a wonderful relaxing day. Then, using a borrowed wheelchair, I was able to go down to Lake George Village to watch the Thursday-Night Fireworks. My grandson rolled me from the parking lot to a bench by the lake where we all enjoyed the fireworks and ice cream.
I've also cured myself of bursitis in my shoulder with herbs and Reiki. When I see you I'll show you the range of motion I now have. I use herbs, crystals and Reiki and it does work.
Eric is using magnetized hematite for his knee injury and I did Reiki on him right after surgery. When the doctor saw him on his first post-op visit, he couldn't believe the progress Eric made.
I know it sounds all New Age-y and crazy but it does work, for me and for Eric. I do it for his Grandmother, she didn't believe it either but she felt it exactly where she was having problems which I had no idea about. We can talk about it when I see you next week if you're interested.
Tomorrow I'm going to Water Slide World! I haven't been there in years, my friend Helena is going with me. Bringing my book, lay in the sun, go in the water, I can't think of a better way to spend a day.
