I feel comfortable with the goodreads site. The facebook, youtube etal are more common. Lots of predators trying to catch the unsuspecting.
Even with my fake name on Facebook I still felt unsafe.
I'm on linkedin because it was promoted as a great networking tool for the working class and could help you find a job. Its well-known worldwide. Strangers send you an email asking for an invite - to be able to read your resume - get your connections. Linkedin stresses not to connect to folks you don't know.

Thanks, I'm going to try the googles link you provided and see what comes up for me.

I see.
Have you ever been to Roger's Rock?

I see.
Have you ever been to Roger's Rock?"
No, we haven't.

On the plus side, Facebook (at least theoretically) is designed only to connect you to people you already know; before someone can add you as a "friend", you have to confirm that you do know him/ her. So if people follow that rule, it would tend to keep predators out of their circle. (Goodreads, of course, is set up differently; most of my friends here are people I never met in person --but as Joy said, Goodreaders are a different, more select group. :-)) A good Facebook feature that Goodreads doesn't have (though it used to) is a notification to your e-mail address when someone messages you. On the other hand, they lack Goodreads' handy feature of e-mailing you notifications of comments in your groups; if they had that, I'd probably participate more. (So on second thought, given some of the comments above, maybe their deficiency in this respect is a good thing.... :-))

Werner, As far as I know, I'm still being notified by email (to my private addy) when someone messages me at my Goodreads mailbox.
If and when you have time, please message me at my GR mailbox and I'll see if I get notified at my private addy.

Werner, Yesterday I did receive a notification from GR (about your GR email reply) at my personal, private, email addy. In fact I just sent you a GR email about it. In it I said (something to the effect):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Werner - Yes, I rec'd notification at my private regular email addy about your email.
If you don't receive these notifications, go to your Goodreads account and see if your email addy needs re-verification. It should say "verified". If it doesn't, then it probably has a message which tells you to re-verifiy.
I learned this at the Feedback group. Sometimes the settings go awry for some reason (caused by servers, I think)."
Sorry to be a bit late in responding. We were away from the computer yesterday.
You're welcome, Werner. I sent you a GR email just now, answering your additional question. If my suggestion doesn't work, you might ask further at the Feedback group. Their link is: ====>
Good luck!
They're very good about replying to questions.
I went to the site you listed for the Million Bells flowers. I know how they got that name, there were a lot of pix. They must have a strong scent because Humming Birds like the colors red and yellow very much. I thought the Mocking Bird fought a lot. These little Humming Birds fight like they are at war. It sure does look funny watching them.
Good reading and hugs, Donna
Just go out of the shower and I feel marvelous.
Getting outside on this beautiful day, reading The Guns of Avalon on the porch right now....
Going canoeing, fishing, and a hike to Ferd's Bog for some bird watching. Reading and sitting by the campfire.
Can hardly wait. Weather forecast is great!!
Have a safe and fun Labor Day Weekend Everyone!
By now you must have left for your camping weekend. Have a good time!
Donna, yes, I've heard about how hummingbirds fight with each other.
Happy Anniversary to Barb and Werner!
~~~~~~~~

Have a great day and many more to come.
I hope your weather today is as wonderful as ours is here in northern NY. Sunny with temps to go up to 78F. I suppose your weather in VA will be even warmer!
Best wishes, Joy

My ex-wife and I were deliriously happy for 23 years ---then we MET!!"

I put up a few pictures of my Blanket flowers here:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid...
Mom gave me the Indian Blanket & told me it was a Galardia. A bus driver friend gave us the Yellow Blanket flower.
I LOVE these flowers. They start blooming in late May or early June & are still doing so today!!! They start from one root & stay that way, although they push their stems far out. The few weeds that can make it through are easily pulled out by simply picking the flower up with one hand & pulling with the other. They're perfect around trees & such.

I love to hear couples staying together and are actually happy, so rare these days.
Jim, how long have you been married?
Arnie! LOL

Jim, I love Gaillardia, or as you call them, "Blanket Flowers". (I've never heard them called that before.) As you said, they are great because they bloom all summer and reseed themselves the next year. So they are almost like perennials which return each year, but unlike perennials, they bloom all season. They seem to be very hardy. Their colors are bright and attractive. See the following webpage about them. It has a good close-up photo:
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/Wi...
We discovered Gaillardia flowers one year in a residential garden when we were vacationing in Maine. The lady complained that she couldn't get rid of them because they spread and kept coming back. I knew they were just the flower for me! LOL Especially because they were so attractive.
Below are links to pics of our Gaillardia:

As you can see in the last photo, the only healthy thing in the ground is the Gaillardia, except for the little barberry bushes. Gaillardia seem to thrive on neglect. :)

But I agree , it's not always true, but great marriages are alas, too few and far apart.
One of my favorites of his is his definitiion of an Atheist--a man with no INVISIBLE means of support"

:) That definitely sounds like Oscar Levant!
I always enjoyed him on the movie screen.
A true curmudgeon.
But also a good piano player.:)

You may remember him on the Jack Paar show in the early 60's where, despite looking like a twitching basket case, he got off hilarious lines.
"I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin" and "Zsa Zsa Gabor has discovered the Secret of Perpetual middle age!"

The flower IS PERFECT! A roadside weed that blooms for 5 months?!!! What more could I ask for?
I spent the day mowing, mostly. I did turn a bowl this morning out of some White Oak & changed the oil & greased my truck. Also read a book.

SciFi ran a movie from a Bradbury story, A Sound of Thunder, which I saw already but I watched it again. Time travel alters the present. I always like that kind of thing.
I'm going to watch TV now, again. Eureka, it's a repeat but a very good episode so I want to see it again. Usually I don't do repeats on TV series unless it's been a long time AND it was exceptional.

Arnie - yes, I remember Oscar Levant on the Jack Parr show years ago. Always an interesting guest. His biography, _A Talent for Genius The Life and Times of Oscar Levant_ (by Sam Kashner) must be a good read. I'll put it on my To-Read shelf.
I've always enjoyed reading the biographies of people in the entertainment business. Am just finishing up _Swanson on Swanson_. Quite a woman. Another excellent memoir was _Adventures in the Screen Trade_ by William Goldman, who wrote _The Princess Bride_. Lots of behind-the-scenes info in the book. A good peek into the world of screenwriting and film making.

Jim, you accomplish more in one day than I do in a week! LOL
You must be a fast reader. I never could read a whole book in one day! I'm such a slow reader and I read only short bits at a time. It's a wonder I've been able to read as much as I have. I spend a lot of time copying the bon mots and quotes which I come across in my reading and listening. I'm always amazed at the clever ways writers and speakers express themselves. I guess it stems from my own weaknesses in this area.

Well said, Nina. Your 61 years of marriage have brought you wisdom. Of the many thoughts on why marriages last, the following quotations have always stayed with me:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We are told that people stay in love because of chemistry, or because they remain intrigued with each other, because of many kindnesses, because of luck . . . But part of it has got to be forgiveness and gratefulness." -Ellen Goodman (1941-____) US journalist
The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook. -William James
A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.
-The Bible, Proverbs 19:11 NIV
"At the end of the what is called the 'sexual life', the only love which has lasted is the love which has everything, every disappointment, every failure and every betrayal, which has accepted even the sad fact that in the end there is no desire so deep as the simple desire for companionship."
-Graham Greene
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course, there are probably just as many thoughts on why marriages DON'T last. LOL

Jackie - Netflix has that movie, "A Sound of Thunder".
As you said, it's an adaptation of a short story by Ray Bradbury. Below is a link to the Netflix description and some interesting reviews:====>

I took a nap this afternoon after spending some time sitting in the sunshine. Funny how the sun can sap the energy out of you. Also great the way a little nap refreshes you and restores the lost energy. Now I'm wide awake and ready to read.
I see from my library account online that the Zelazny book I requested (_This Immortal_) has been shipped. It won't be long now before I have it in my hands.

Nina, I don't think I realized it was a book. I see that the title of the book was a long one: _Julie and Julia 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen_. I'll see the movie when Netflix offers it.

That's right - the LG island campsites don't allow dogs. Land sites do.
We meet some nice people when we go camping. Lots of people read, walk or bike through the campgrounds, bird and much more.
