Crown of Midnight ~ Plot

I personally would like Celaena to confront Arobynn. For her to find out the truth about that night when she was captured and sent away and maybe for her to punch him (or something of the like...!).
Another thing I'd like is for Chaol to find out about Sam. Why? No idea, I just do! I think that when Dorian found out, it made him see a different side of Celaena. Chaol has seen that side once or twice - mainly the fight scene at the end, when he reaches out to her and then afterwards when they hug - but he needs to start seeing that other side of her more. I wish she'd open up to him.

Which is a shame, seeing that she's both!

I love the title! <3

Celaena briefly mentions him in Throne of Glass during the piano scene, I believe.

I bought all four for $4 on barnesandnoble.com (nook books). Even if you don't own a nook you can read them on the computer.

They add a lot of depth (and understanding) to Celaena's life and personality.

Why are you sorry? I said it was a shame he was dead, doesn't mean I'm not glad he's out of the picture. Celaena+Chaol= my eternal happiness

Chaol and Celaena forever, it has to be!

I don't think it's degrading to the book, its not like we're ignoring the rest of it. We're just focusing on a certain aspect because we don't know much about what is going to be in this book and there was the little blurb in the synopsis about her having already chosen between Chaol and Dorian.

You're so right. One of the main reasons I liked the book so much was the fact that it wasn't focused on the romance. I've always found it so irritating when there is a battle/fight and all the heroine can talk about is how handsome the love interest is. *facepalm*
Celaena had always focused on what was more important. During the training and the Tests she didn't gush about how cute Dorian or Chaol was looking that day, she only thought of them during her free time.
I have read too many YA novels with whiny/love-stricken heroines, if Celaena acted like the others I definitely wouldn't have enjoyed the story as much.

No harm, no foul. ;)
I think we all knew what you meant and in my eyes Sam was part of a completely different time in Celaena's life...even though the time frame between the novellas and Throne of Glass is only one year, lol.

True, true. Once she was sent to Endovier, she locked up that part of her old life. That's where her nightmares derive from.
Now I'm not saying it's necessary to read the novellas (I read them after I read Throne of Glass, mainly because they were cheap and I was bored, lol), but there are parts in the book that hint at events that happened in the novellas and Celaena immediately shuts them out. I'm hoping that in Crown of Midnight she starts to open up that part of her; she'll be an assassin again and I'm thinking that flashback memories are inevitable.

I think yes, she has changed alot, but you also see - from reading the novellas - how she is still pretty much the same person. Chaol actually comments on it, how she came out of Endovier and can still laugh. She has such a strong spirit that she doesn't allow her past, or difficult situations, to break her. Sam's death was tragic, but it didn't change who she was.
Because if someone managed to do something that did change who Celaena was, that would be the moment where Celaena lost and they won. But Celaena is the kind of heroine who triumphs over adversity and becomes stronger through her pain.

me too, i like the way he sounds, and im actually really interested about him. I want to know more, so i actually hope that sam will somehow come back in the second book.

I don't think he'll come back unless some magical witches or something bring him back to life...he died in The Assassin and the Empire and it was not pretty. *shudders*

If you want to know more about Sam, you can read the novellas: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, The Assassin and the Desert, The Assassin and the Underworld, and The Assassin and the Empire. There $0.99 each at Barnes & Noble (nook book)
Here's the link to the first novella if you're interested. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/thron...

Hmm...that would be interesting, but as Sydney mentioned, his death was not at all pleasant and I highly doubt he'd come back. Maybe she'll get a glimpse of his ghost...?
Whatever happens, I think that any romance between them isn't likely but as it is with all novels, the possibilities are endless :)

Haha, so true. I've noticed that when talking about other books as well, "Team This Guy" no "Team That Guy"!
Most females, myself included, tend to flock towards the tiniest hint of possible romantic pursuits -even if it's not part of the main story line- and pick it apart until we're for sure that it exists. I've even hoped for romance that was never ever going to happen! *cough* Hermione & Draco *cough* (I know, weird, lol)
But alas, I'm a hopeless romantic and what is life without love? ;)

"The King of Adarlan had outlawed it all-magic, Fae, faeries-and removed any trace so thoroughly that even those who had magic in their blood almost believed it never really existed, Celaena herself being one of them."
And:
"It had been a while since she'd contemplated the gifts she'd lost, though the memory of her abilities haunted her dreams. Despite the carnage, perhaps it was good that magic had vanished. It was far too dangerous for any sane person to wield; her gifts might have destroyed her by this point."What does that mean?! She knows she is a magical being? So many mind-boggling questions!
Sydney wrote: "Hopefully in Crown of Midnight it will delve more into the magic that's been banished from the kingdom, because that's one thing I want to know more about. Were all of the mythical/magical creature..."
I think that there's even more to Celaena's backstory then we know. Her having magic routes - or a past involving magic, or the persecution of those with it - was mentioned briefly in the novellas and through her reactions to the topic being brought up (I think in the Assassin and the Desert). Maybe she is slightly aware.

It's a possibility, all reasonable theories are. Celaena always shuts out her past, even in the novellas, so there really is no way of knowing unless she opens up in Crown of Midnight.
It could be that she had such powerful magic that it terrified her. Celaena was eight when Arobynn found her, by that time The King had outlawed magic and started burning down towns, books, sacred buildings, as well as the gifted themselves. Perhaps she blocked out her gifts because she was scared of what would happen to her...?
Seriously anything is possible.
(Just an FYI, the quotes from my previous comment are on page 31; beginning of chapter 5)

It seems as though she used to have strong magical abilities so it stands to reason her parents did as well. If they were killed for their magic, she would have wanted nothing to do with her own magic.

Wow, I didn't even think about her parents being magic...
That's really insightful and I agree, Celaena would definitely not want anything to do with her gift if her parents died because of their own.

I'm all for Celaena hooking up with Chaol. Dorian seems nice but superficial. I think he might end up breaking her heart.

That kind of things annoys me to no end, I just want to scream 'you're with someone else so either break up with them or get over him!'

If that happened, she'd regret it for the rest of her life, even if she wised up eventually. She'd have been wasting all that time trying to make it work with Dorian when she could have been with Chaol. Happy. And I'm overdoing it... Me and my quote-y mouth will shut up now.

What do you hope will happen?!
