Barbara | 8208 comments Welcome, Cynthia. I'm hoping that you are referring to Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. I nominated that one and hope to have a lot of people to talk to about it. It is definitely thought provoking.

message 377: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 1 comments Hi, I'm Katherine, I live in Southwest Idaho and enjoy reading all kinds of books, though my favorite genres are the classics and well-written historical fiction. My interests include collecting books, writing, and a bit of gardening, all on a completely amateur-level where the pleasure remains intact. The book collecting began almost unintentionally, fueled by the simple fact that many of the books from some of my favorite authors were out-of-print and difficult to find. Couple that with the desire (need?) for an easily accessible personal library of wonderful literature, and voila, long-term hobby.

message 378: by Sherry, Doyenne (new)

Sherry | 8261 comments Welcome, Katherine. You sound like you'll fit right in here.

message 379: by Baelor (new)

Baelor | 11 comments I am Baelor. I am a recent college graduate and studied Classics (Latin/Greek), but have also always enjoyed Sci-Fi and Fantasy. I tend to have...conservative views on literature and poetry, but am trying to broaden my chronological horizons and delve into some more contemporary "literary" fiction.

I would love some new recommendations, so please add me as a friend on GR!

I also enjoy Greek tragedy, philosophy and logic, and mythology (especially Greek). My favorite contemporary book along those lines is Zachary Mason's Lost Books of the Odyssey. It was life-altering.

message 380: by Sherry, Doyenne (new)

Sherry | 8261 comments Welcome, Baelor. I'm sure just looking at the group's book shelves will give you some new ideas for books to read. We have discussions going back for years.
