~Melissa~ I'm reading A Dance With Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5) by George R.R. Martin with Leslie - it will def take me most of the month, lol. Still reading The Mane Event (Pride, #1) by Shelly Laurenston ~ to finish tonight. I started Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, #2) by Darynda Jones and have to pick a book for GR WwF's from The Challenge Factory so will be starting another book this weekend.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments ATTENTION TEAM!

Just wanted to say thanks for every one getting us off to a good start. Every thing is going pretty smooth. Only a few hiccups. Please be attentive to your Goodreads messages (PMs) over the next couple of days as we flatten out a few bumps. You might need to clarify or change some minor things. If you don't get a PM, you are golden!

Still waiting on a few team members to join. Please check and make sure you have joined. The quickest way to do this is to go to page 1 of this thread, find your name on the participants list, and if it is hyperlinked you have joined. If you haven't joined and are having trouble doing so, refer to this GoodReads 101 thread.

Just a reminder to put in start and finish dates for each book as well as placing each book on the shelf you created for this challenge!

I am thinking about doing a little weekly weekend motivational on Saturday or Sundays. Complete with book stats, recognizing members who have read a lot the past week and book suggestions from members. Please PM me by Saturday afternoons if you would like to make a book suggestion or any other suggestion/shout out to go in these weekly updates. Updates will be posted in this thread and I will post suggestions/shout outs as I see appropriate.

Thanks for all your hard work in advance. It's going to be a great time!

message 103: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Thanks for the update, Rachel!

message 104: by Marla (new)

Marla | 1803 comments I wish I was artsy and could design a banner for us...someone who is, please come up with a few designs so we can pick one.

I was lurking on the other teams and I like the sparkly C, but it's probably too girly for our Dangerous Group...

Go Team!

message 105: by Reed (new)

Reed (reedraab) I like the idea of weekly motivation, Rachel! I'm a bit of a slow reader but I should be able to do at least a book a week, maybe even two (I'm a NYC commuter).

Marla's idea for a banner is very cool. The only thing I keep thinking of are the book covers to the Dexter series which might be a little too bloody...

message 106: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I liked the sparkly blue C, too! LOL! I was shot down.

message 107: by Michelle (new)

Michelle [Helen Geek] (michelle_reads_to_relax) | 49 comments I apologize for being absent. My updates weren't working correctly. I finished my shelf set-up and am on my third book -- Unveiled (Turner, #1) by Courtney Milan .

A question about a DNF ... how many pages or what percentage of the book counts?

message 108: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Michelle- Unfortunately, a DNF cannot be counted since we are going for a total of finished books. It's all or nothing. Sorry! Lisa Kay, Mary, or Lisarenee please correct me if I'm wrong.

message 109: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (new)

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
You are correct, Rachel. DNF doesn't count.

message 110: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments Ok, I finally finished the book I started at the end of December and am starting my first one for this challenge.

Murder under Cover (A Bibliophile Mystery, #4) by Kate Carlisle

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
Oh, Diane, I've always wanted to start the Bibliophile Mysteries. They've been on my radar for awhile.

Okay. Want to be sure I record books correctly. I have one now I didn't finish. I'll remove it from my shelf. Thanks!

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

I am still reading my second book The First Princess of Wales by Karen Harper . I am about a third of the way through it (it is around 617 pages lol).

message 114: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Good luck, Diane!

Way to go, Marguerite! I plan on finishing my second book tonight and reading two more before returning to work on Tuesday!

How is everyone else doing? Any good books yet? Any suggestions or shoutouts for the team update I will be rolling out tomorrow evening?

message 115: by [deleted user] (new)

Diana thank you and you can do it!!!!

message 116: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments I finished two of mine today:
A Rogue's Proposal (Cynster, #4) by Stephanie Laurens by Stephanie Laurens. I read it a long time ago. I gave it 4 stars. Historical romance/regency romance is a favorite genre of mine.
I also finished Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, #1) by Karen Chance by Karen Chance. This is the start of a new series for me and it's a new author. I gave it 3 stars. It's Urban Fantasy and while an intriguing start to a series, it was very difficult. I have to read the 2nd one in the series later in the month for another challenge. Everyone says that one is better.

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

Leslie way to go!!!

message 118: by Alley (new)

Alley (alleycatfish) | 198 comments I've finished book 4 - Hell on Wheels by Julie Ann Walker.
Still reading Ashes in the Wind by Kathleen Woodiwiss (it's 672 pages, so it'll take me a bit to finish) and Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Started Allison Hewitt Is Trapped by Madeline Roux - should finish it tomorrow or Sunday.
Will be starting Doubleblind by Ann Aguirre tonight, maybe.

message 119: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments @Marguerite - thanks! I was off to a slow start this month. It's picking up.

@Alley - What did you think of Hell on Wheels? I just finished it. And I haven't read any Kathleen Woodiwiss in a very long time. I used to love her.

Great job, Divas!! We are picking up steam!!

message 120: by ~Melissa~ (last edited Jan 04, 2013 07:46PM) (new)

~Melissa~ I finished 2 today but only one counts. I had to finish Stuart Little for another challenge.
I finished The Mane Event tonight. Love this author. Super funny, sexy shifter characters. Def want to continue this series.

Started Second Grave on the Left and will be starting 2 more books this weekend.

@ Leslie ~ the second in the series is better. Took me forever to finish the first one - a lot of world building and introducing a ton of characters.

@ Alley Nice Job!!

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

Leslie you are very welcome!!!

Alley way to go!!!

Melissa way to go!!!

message 122: by Alley (new)

Alley (alleycatfish) | 198 comments Leslie wrote: "@Alley - What did you think of Hell on Wheels? I just finished it. And I haven't read any Kathleen Woodiwiss in a very ..."

I liked it. There were a few things that bugged me - overuse of certain phrases (H-E-double-hockey-sticks??! really?) and random movie quotes/song lyrics - but not enough to make me put the book down. A few eye rolls, maybe, but that's it. I put the rest of the series on my TBR - I'm looking forward to Frank and Becky's book. If there is one. There'd better be one.

As for Kathleen Woodiwiss - this is the first one of hers I've read. I really like it so far - it's just very dense. Small print on large pages makes for slow reading.

message 123: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Melissa - yes, the first one was seriously frustrating. I read several reviews and it was called an "infodump". So true. I'm looking forward to the second one to see what she does with it all.
I've read the first two in the Charley Davidson series and I like them but that is also a frustrating series. It's good you have the Shelley Laurenston book because there is not even a hint of sex in the Second Grave. But the story and characters are interesting.

message 124: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments Attention Dangerously Determined to Devour All Books Team!

Let me also say thanks for getting us off to a good start. Your team of captains for this challenge are:

Rebecca (Captain)
Rachel (Co-Captain)
Leslie (Co-Captain)
Vi (Co-Captain)

As Rachel said, we have had a few minor hiccups but I think we are getting there! I have sent a lot of PM's this evening regarding start dates and page numbers. You may have been asked to remove books. If you could remove these as soon as possible, I would appreciate it as it will help with our record keeping. As a reminder:

- books started prior to January 1, 2013 will not count toward this challenge
- books less than 170 pages will not count toward this challenge
- no graphic novels, comic books, children's books will be counted toward this challenge

If you have a book that you are unsure of, please ask. If you have an ebook without a print edition on goodreads, please ask. We are here to help!

I know that there were talks about creating a banner. I am not a creative person - feel free to throw out ideas. Don't be shy!

I haven't had a problem seeing most shelves. However, if you shelf is marked as private, I would ask that you accept a friend request from me. It really is for us to track things.

We are off to a good start. Being a Captain is a little dangerous - it's only adding to my to-read list :) Happy Reading!

message 125: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Well that's good to know going into the book. Her sense of humor keeps me entertained or it did in the first book so we'll see

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

Just took a peek at teams A, B and C's numbers and we are in 4th place.ugh Wish I hadn't looked.rofl

Keep in mind that this is only Janaury 4th. I think a handful of people (or more) are still finishing up things started in 2012.

We can do it!!

message 128: by Jane (new)

Jane | 705 comments Just finished my third book, hope to start a new tomorrow.

message 129: by [deleted user] (new)

Rebecca yes I know. You bet we can do it!!!

message 130: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished my first book We Bought a Zoo The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Change Their Lives Forever by Benjamin Mee I had to read this one for a challenge.

I am half way through A Job From Hell (Ancient Legends, #1) by Jayde Scott and should finish today or tomorrow.

Then I'll be moving on to Breathe (Breathe, #1) by Sarah Crossan and Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent

It's a good cozy mystery series. I like Brooklyn and the bits and pieces you learn about bookbinding are pretty interesting.

message 132: by Donna (new)

Donna Wolczyk | 75 comments Yah, I just finished my first book for this challenge!! I hope that I recorded it correctly. If any of the Team Captains want to check, that would be great, because I am still feeling my way around this site and how things work. Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin

message 133: by Michelle (last edited Jan 05, 2013 07:57AM) (new)

Michelle [Helen Geek] (michelle_reads_to_relax) | 49 comments I finished Courtney Milan's Unveiled: Unveiled

I'm now reading Unclaimed: Unclaimed

I'm loving this author. New to me this year and not sure why I waited so long. Lovely books.

message 134: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Donna, I went and checked and it's there. All you have to do is click on your name that is hyperlinked at the start of this thread. It will show covers of the books you have read and give you the current number of books.

I read enough books that I sometimes forget to shelve them properly. If you see that a book is missing it's easy to go and add it to the shelf and put in the correct dates you started and finished it.

@Ally - the writers language in HoW's is why I gave it a lower rating. It was just so unrelentingly full of annoying expressions. But I liked the characters and the story.

@Rachel - great job as Captain so far!!

Not only is it there, Donna, but the start and stop dates are correct. Yay!

message 136: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Finished The Deepest Cut last night. I hope to finish Shiver tomorrow, then I'll start Gossip Girl.

message 137: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments @ Michelle - I'll be interested in what you think of Shiver. I just picked it up for my nook as it was on sale. I've heard good things about the author.

message 138: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Leslie wrote: "@ Michelle - I'll be interested in what you think of Shiver. I just picked it up for my nook as it was on sale. I've heard good things about the author."

I'm half way through and I really love it! It's way more poetic than I thought it would be which is nice. And I can really relate to the female mc. I think you'll enjoy it :)

message 139: by Donna (new)

Donna Wolczyk | 75 comments Thanks for the help guys!! I am also proud that I was able to get the book cover to show up!! I am so computer illiterate sometimes. Now that I know how to do it, I will place it properly :)

message 140: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments @Michelle and Leslie- I enjoyed Shiver. Especially the colored ink if you are reading the "dead tree" version!! Was really cool.

Way to go, Devourers! Keep up your wonderful work! :)

message 141: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 2240 comments Well, I got completely distracted and read a book I wasn't planning on reading yet. I just finished The Rake by Mary Jo Putney and it showcases the best of what historical romance can be. I highly recommend it.

message 142: by Alley (new)

Alley (alleycatfish) | 198 comments I barely got any reading done today. Tomorrow should be better - I always seem to read a lot on laundry day.

message 143: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ Just finished my third book Just Ask This is an ebook that I received prior pg length approval from the Mods in the sign up/how to thread. Still reading Second Grave on the Left

message 144: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finsihsed The First Princess of Wales by Karen Harper and starting The Ultimate Life A Novel by Jim Stovall which is my third book.

message 145: by Tea (new)

Tea (prettylives) | 17 comments hey I was wonder why on the first page which lists participants there's a name alert next to mine ?

message 146: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments I started Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series last week of December and now I'm planning to finishing it. It's a epic fantasy and so far, it's really good. The biggest plus point is the world building. It's damn good. Though I wouldn't say it's a negative, I wish Butcher created a more flawed lead character. Tavi is like almost perfect. He becomes almost-perfect. So far, this year I've finished up books 2, 3 & 4. Two more to go and all of them are chunksters. Can we get a reward for finishing chunksters? Pretty please? *Puppy Eyes*

Off to start Princeps' Fury (Codex Alera, #5) by Jim Butcher

message 147: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments Leslie & Melissa - good luck with aDwD. I really need to continue with the series. I've read the first but haven't progressed beyond that, unfortunately.

message 148: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments Tea - I think there's another participant called Tia. That might be the reason but I could be wrong.

message 149: by atefe (last edited Jan 06, 2013 03:10AM) (new)

atefe (aatefe) | 11 comments hi my team....I'm currently reading a great Persian translation of "Le Pere Goriot" by Balzac...it's really enjoyable....hope to finish it today....

message 150: by Rebecca NJ (new)

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 2120 comments @Tea - Vi is correct. There are now two Teas and one Tia signed up for the challenge.
