Amy | 3 comments Hello! I am a writer of historical fiction living in the Pacific Northwest. I look forward to learning from this group of like-minded individuals. I too have read the rules so I am ready to appropriately engage with you all. :-)

Welcome Amy - be sure to introduce yourself in the proper Intro thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Amy | 3 comments Hi Becky, OK, thank you -- I will head over there.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 585 comments Apologies if I missed this, but have the mods decided to discontinue the Featured Author group reads? I never planned to enter, having been lucky enough to win once, but I did enjoy supporting other writers.

We haven't officially decided anything as of yet, but I'd say that it's on hiatus for the moment, while we decide whether to continue or not. They don't seem to get very much participation - looking back through them for the past two years, there's usually just a few people who read them.

message 106: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 585 comments Thanks, Becky, for the explanation. I do hope you will bring them back. It was a nice feature of the group.

As a reader, I did not always participate (because my chosen book did not win, because I was busy with other things, etc.), but I always followed the posts. So the number of people who comment does not translate exactly to the number of readers or members interested.

In the Advertising and promo folder, yes.

What is your pen name so that I know not to delete the promo if you post it under a different acct?

Monica | 99 comments I know you ask everyone to link the books they mention, but right now that feature is not available on the app. However there are some
members in the "What are you reading now?" thread pressuring and making people feel bad for not linking books. If we can't do it because the feature is not available we should not be made to feel bad about it. It's not out fault.

message 113: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda I have the same problem with my iPad. There's no way to link books that I've been able to find

message 114: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Monica and Rhonda, I really wouldn't worry about it and please, don't let those people get to you. The rule was created more for the polls because it's a pain when there are a bunch of nominations and we have to look each book up. Sometimes there are books with similar titles and we have no clue which book the member is referring too. It's really too time consuming for us mods to figure it out.

I use the app myself sometimes. While, they certainly improved the app it really sucks for group discussions. When people link covers all it shows is blank spaces and you can't easily link titles in text either, unless you do it in html. I sometimes use html to link, but not all the time and this is coming from a mod. :) I really wouldn't worry about. If it helps just put the title and author in text and leave it at that. It's nice to have a link, but if you can't do it easily don't let it hinder your participation.

message 115: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda Thanks Jackie, I appreciate your input. I was just not going to post about books where a title was needed but instead will take your advice.

I've tried using the desktop version on my iPhone, but sometimes it takes a while to load. Also, I suffer from "fat fingers" syndrome and I end up clicking on stuff I don't mean too. :)

Sigrun Schulz | 4 comments Thanks for the clear rules. I don't like spoilers, though, as a history major at university and through travel in Europe, I do know quite a bit about certain historical personages. I hope I am able to add to the discussions when I do comment.

Jim Ryan | 2 comments How can I separate historical fact in historical fiction from an author's creativity when there are no footnotes?
My most recent questions are from Ken Follett Winter of the World.
1. Specifics of the killing hospitals for handicapped people.
2. Stalin's 48 hours at his Villa as Germany advances.

Jim, this thread is for comments or questions about the group's rules, not random discussion topics.

I would suggest asking your question in a thread that's similar to what you want to talk about in the HF Discussions folder or make a new thread in that folder if nothing fits what you're discussing.

Hi Patty, please use the Introductions thread to introduce yourself.

This thread is for discussion about the group and group rules, etc.

message 129: by Tom (new)

Tom Behr) (tom_behr) | 22 comments Hi Folks
If I understand the rules properly, I can't ask members for feedback on my book until I've made 25 appropriate contributions. Is that correct?
Thanks

message 130: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments No, you can advertise your book in one of the three Promotional Threads available: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

You can also recommend your book to members if your book fits what they are looking for. However, we do not encourage authors to ask for feedback on their books.

Send me a private message with the information. It's helpful if it contains the number and type of copies, who the giveaway is open to, expectations for winners, and the preferred duration of the giveaway.

Actually, there seems to be a third way. Go to Historical Fictionistas homepage and look at the menu in the upper right-hand corner. You'll find an item that says your comments which, if you click on it, will also give you the count.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 111 comments Welcome to Historical Fictionistas

When I first joined Goodreads, Christina, I used to make quite a few mistakes, and it took me a while even to realize I was doing something wrong. It's great that there's lots of different ways of doing things on here - it keeps us happily occupied - although not quite so happy as being buried in a good book!

Hi Sylvia and Cindy,
Welcome to the group! There's really no specific way to engage here at Historical Fictionistas. You can participate as much or as little as you like.

First, you're in the right thread to read our group rules, so that's a good start. If you haven't already, you should introduce yourself in the Introductions thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

We usually have one group read per month, but this upcoming month we have two. You can find them on the group homepage, and there will be both spoiler and non-spoiler discussion threads set up in the Group Reads Discussions folder for them: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

From there, you can jump over to the "What Are You Reading" thread to discuss what you're reading: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you're looking for a book you read but can't remember, try this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you need or want recommendations for a book you're in the mood for, try this folder (create a new thread with your request if one doesn't exist already that meets what you're looking for): https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

If you just want to chat, try the Front Parlor: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... Either join an existing discussion, or start a new one.

There are also several challenges and games, look for those folders toward the bottom of the group homepage. Join any or all of them you are interested in. :)

But I shall persevere! I'm the author of two historical novels about the Ojibwe and Odawa people set in the 1500s, including my new prequel, which I believe can't be mentioned here, right (?). Anyway, I have lots of opinions about historical fiction and will get hacking at it. This isn't the thread for introductions - please feel free to intro yourself in the Introductions thread. Also, make sure you read the rules about allowed author activity - including mentions and advertising of your book.

Welcome to the group!

I’m not sure. I don’t generally do the challenges but I’ll check if there’s anything in the works.

Hi Shannon. I know Gretchen was working on a yearly challenge. We are also continuing some of our others such as HF University, Monopoly, Around the World, and Million Miles. I am planning to give HF University a revamp but unfortunately have not gotten to it yet.
