Robert, we have an introductions thread which is the appropriate place for your post: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Chris.
Christine, what do you mean by "here"? Historical Fictionistas or Goodreads in general?
If you're asking about Goodreads in general - any book or story that has been published (even if electronically only) can be added to the database and linked to your author profile. Genre doesn't matter - this is a database, so if it's published, it's added. As to how you'd identify the book's content, you can add that information to the book's description.
Regarding Historical Fictionistas, if the books are historical or period fiction, then they're fine here - but please remember to follow our rules when discussing them.

ETA: Okay, I tried the hovering thing on my own message and that didn't work - so someone wiser may have a trick for a 2nd option.

If it's a comment you've just posted, you either need to refresh the page or use a previous post. The system needs to refresh after a post to count it and link it to you.

J.R., this is explained in the rules - please be sure to read them thoroughly.
How To Tell How Many Comments You've Made in The Group:
1) Find yourself in the member list (located in the menu at the top right of the group homepage). You will see how many comments you've made, which is also a link that will take you to your group comment history.
2) Find a comment you've posted in a thread in the group, and hover your mouse over your name. You will see two little popups - 1 with the number of comments you've made, and 1 with a link to your comment history in the group.

Sorry, I did read the group rules but obviously missed that part. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
No problem... they are long and there's a lot in there. Thanks for checking them in the first place. :)

Ok... I'm not sure what you're getting at.

not sure what you mean by "getting at"

I chat a lot on line, as it seems easier, freer.

Exactly. I am much more likely to be quiet face to face. It is easier to chat online. :)

Hmm, ok. It just seemed like one of those comments leading up to something else. If you were just making an observation, that's fine. It was just random, lol. We don't delete lurkers though. We don't have any rules requiring activity unless one is trying to advertise. Maybe they just want recommendations from what others are reading. I dunno... ;)

it was only an innocent observation"
I think people who don't tend to lurk on forums and feel like just plunging in are surprised that other people have a very different behavior. Not that there's anything wrong with it, just that it is unexpected. :)

Hope this ends the discussion, which I still don't understand how it got to this point.

In general, it's best to be clear when you comment in text/forums, and keep in mind where you're commenting, or you leave it open for people to interpret it in ways you may not have intended.
Commenting on others' lack of activity in the group, in the Group Rules thread, led me to assume that you were leading the conversation towards doing something about them. It seems that I'm not the only one who assumed something like that. After the comments following yours, I clarified that we do not remove lurkers.
You were just making an observation, which is fine, but that wasn't clear from your initial comment.

As have I.
As have I.

Bryn wrote: "I have been exasperated by advertisement lately, in the threads. I don't want to point the finger, but are members warned when they flout the rules?"
Yes, when we see that rules are being broken. But there are a lot of threads, and we can't always watch every single one of them. Do you want to pm me with the threads where you're seeing advertising that's against our rules?

Christine wrote: "Hi: sorry if I've missed something obvious, but how do I include a link to a book I mention in a thread post? Thanks."
You can use the "add book/author" link above every comment box to search and add the link, or your can enter the HTML manually to link to the URL of the book or author page. If you click on "some HTML is OK", it will open a tooltip to help explain the HTML.

Jo, this is not the introductions thread. Please be sure to post in the appropriate threads, and keep your comments advertisement-free until you're an active member of the group.

Tony - Please read our rules, and look around the group. The Introductions thread is the very first thread on the homepage: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
You are free to introduce yourself, once, and then participate in the group other than advertising your books. This group is here to discuss historical fiction, NOT as a billboard.

Nice intro. You may want to try placing it in the INTRODUCTION thread that Becky kindly linked you to in post 87. :)

I've just joined the group and can't find the section with rules. All I get is a discussion thread when I follow the link
Can anyone help.
The rules are the first post in this thread.

:)

Can I promote the book on HF? The contest? and which folder?

The contest would go under the Contests & Giveaway folder.

Michael, this is not the appropriate thread for your intro. We have an introductions thread, here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If I wanted to suggest/start a new discussion thread, what is the proper procedure? Don't want to make a mistake!
Thanks
Mike

I was born about a century and a half too late. I'm madly in love with all things Victorian and Gilded Age and love writing novels about post-Civil War America and the flawed and fascinating people who lived then. My first novel about a morphine-addicted Civil War veteran seeking redemption The House on Tenafly Road was chosen by the Historical Novel Society as an Editors' Choice Pick and featured as a Notable Indie Book of the Year 2013 in Historical Novel Review.
Just a quick look around and I know that I'll love getting to know all the other historical fiction fanatics.
Adrienne

Oops, maybe I did. I'm awful at figuring out threads so I hope you will all put up with me while I learn the ropes!
Thanks!
Adrienne
