Robert Hays (goodreadscomroberthays) | 11 comments I am a voracious reader of both historical fiction and historical non-fiction. I love history and I love good writing. I also am a Goodreads author.

Robert, we have an introductions thread which is the appropriate place for your post: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Christine Malec | 156 comments Hi: I have a question. As an author, my novel is listed on my author profile. Is it ok to add short stories that are available electronically on Amazon/Kindle? The stories in question are historical fiction, but should also be labelled erotica, as they have explicit content. Is such content welcome here? If so, is there a way to identify it as adult material? Thanks,
Chris.

Christine, what do you mean by "here"? Historical Fictionistas or Goodreads in general?

If you're asking about Goodreads in general - any book or story that has been published (even if electronically only) can be added to the database and linked to your author profile. Genre doesn't matter - this is a database, so if it's published, it's added. As to how you'd identify the book's content, you can add that information to the book's description.

Regarding Historical Fictionistas, if the books are historical or period fiction, then they're fine here - but please remember to follow our rules when discussing them.

J.R. Tomlin (jrtomlin) | 24 comments I'm new to this group and have what is a stupid question, I'm sure, but how do I know when I've made 25 comments? I don't generally tick them off, but at some point I might want to mention a giveaway or something. I certainly don't want to break any group rules.

message 58: by Darcy (last edited Jun 19, 2013 03:33AM) (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 80 comments There are two ways that I know of. One is to find yourself on the member's list, or if you hover the cursor over your name on any of your messages, it will pop-up. I see that you currently have 10 messages. :)

ETA: Okay, I tried the hovering thing on my own message and that didn't work - so someone wiser may have a trick for a 2nd option.

If it's a comment you've just posted, you either need to refresh the page or use a previous post. The system needs to refresh after a post to count it and link it to you.

J.R., this is explained in the rules - please be sure to read them thoroughly.

How To Tell How Many Comments You've Made in The Group:
1) Find yourself in the member list (located in the menu at the top right of the group homepage). You will see how many comments you've made, which is also a link that will take you to your group comment history.
2) Find a comment you've posted in a thread in the group, and hover your mouse over your name. You will see two little popups - 1 with the number of comments you've made, and 1 with a link to your comment history in the group.

Sorry, I did read the group rules but obviously missed that part. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Ok... I'm not sure what you're getting at.

message 65: by Diane (new)

Diane Lewis The group seems so talkative I was surprised at so many zero comments.
not sure what you mean by "getting at"

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 372 comments Some people like to lurk. True in almost any group.

message 67: by J.R. (new)

J.R. Tomlin (jrtomlin) | 24 comments And some people talk a lot. Also true in almost any group. (I speak as one of the "talk a lot" people ;) )

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 372 comments I'm a member of both populations (in different groups), myself.

message 69: by Diane (new)

Diane Lewis I'll talk a lot with people I know, but be fairly quiet with strangers. Depends on the group dynamic.
I chat a lot on line, as it seems easier, freer.

Exactly. I am much more likely to be quiet face to face. It is easier to chat online. :)

Hmm, ok. It just seemed like one of those comments leading up to something else. If you were just making an observation, that's fine. It was just random, lol. We don't delete lurkers though. We don't have any rules requiring activity unless one is trying to advertise. Maybe they just want recommendations from what others are reading. I dunno... ;)

message 72: by Diane (new)

Diane Lewis I don't know where it would have led, so I'm still confused.
it was only an innocent observation

I think people who don't tend to lurk on forums and feel like just plunging in are surprised that other people have a very different behavior. Not that there's anything wrong with it, just that it is unexpected. :)

message 74: by Diane (new)

Diane Lewis I certainly didn't ask for anyone to be deleted, and am surpised it was taken as such.
Hope this ends the discussion, which I still don't understand how it got to this point.

In general, it's best to be clear when you comment in text/forums, and keep in mind where you're commenting, or you leave it open for people to interpret it in ways you may not have intended.

Commenting on others' lack of activity in the group, in the Group Rules thread, led me to assume that you were leading the conversation towards doing something about them. It seems that I'm not the only one who assumed something like that. After the comments following yours, I clarified that we do not remove lurkers.

You were just making an observation, which is fine, but that wasn't clear from your initial comment.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 372 comments I was unclear on what you meant, because I have indeed seen the suggestion to delete lurkers made seriously on other groups.

Yes, when we see that rules are being broken. But there are a lot of threads, and we can't always watch every single one of them. Do you want to pm me with the threads where you're seeing advertising that's against our rules?

You can use the "add book/author" link above every comment box to search and add the link, or your can enter the HTML manually to link to the URL of the book or author page. If you click on "some HTML is OK", it will open a tooltip to help explain the HTML.

Jo, this is not the introductions thread. Please be sure to post in the appropriate threads, and keep your comments advertisement-free until you're an active member of the group.

message 84: by Tony (new)

Tony Brooks Dear Jo and excellent moderator people, could you give an old Aussie HF writer some guidance on this 'introductions' thread thing? I am told by the xynobooks editors that my two novels are well worth reading so I would like to bring them to the attention of your members - while doing the right thing of course.

message 85: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Tony - Please read our rules, and look around the group. The Introductions thread is the very first thread on the homepage: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

You are free to introduce yourself, once, and then participate in the group other than advertising your books. This group is here to discuss historical fiction, NOT as a billboard.

message 86: by Tony (new)

Tony Brooks OK, following the rules, here goes with an introduction; I'm Tony Brooks, have loved historical fiction all my lengthening life. I live in Adelaide, South Australia and am fascinated by the little known characters and events in the history of my adopted country. My books and plays address those themes in an effort to show Aussies that they have history beside Ned Kelly.

Richard Barnes (richardwhittenbarnes) I have a new novel published on Jan 1. There is a contest Goodreads running through the end of January, but not hosted by HF.
Can I promote the book on HF? The contest? and which folder?

message 92: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Per the group rules you need to be an active participant, meaning 25+ comments to promote your contest. You currently have 6 comments.

The contest would go under the Contests & Giveaway folder.

Michael, this is not the appropriate thread for your intro. We have an introductions thread, here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Michael Schmicker Aloha:
If I wanted to suggest/start a new discussion thread, what is the proper procedure? Don't want to make a mistake!
Thanks
Mike

message 95: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments First start by searching if the topic is already available. You can do that by using the "search discussion posts" search box on the top right of the page (available on the full website only). If you can't find the topic then just start one under the proper folder. If you don't know what that folder is feel free to put it under the General one and we'll move it for you. :)

Michael Schmicker Aloha Jackie:
Thanks for the info. Shall do.

Adrienne Morris | 4 comments Hi,

I was born about a century and a half too late. I'm madly in love with all things Victorian and Gilded Age and love writing novels about post-Civil War America and the flawed and fascinating people who lived then. My first novel about a morphine-addicted Civil War veteran seeking redemption The House on Tenafly Road was chosen by the Historical Novel Society as an Editors' Choice Pick and featured as a Notable Indie Book of the Year 2013 in Historical Novel Review.

Just a quick look around and I know that I'll love getting to know all the other historical fiction fanatics.

Adrienne

If you haven't done so already, you should really consider taking hold of your Author Page: Adrienne Morris. Here is GR's informational page showing you the advantages: https://www.goodreads.com/author/program
