J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2268 comments BTW our listopia list is way behind with 358 books compared to 375 on our bookself.

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9...

I am maxed out on 100 votes.

message 1353: by Darren (last edited May 02, 2022 07:13AM) (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments I'm maxed out too, but I regularly shift my votes around so that my 100 are for books that most "need" my vote, i.e. those which I feel are too far down in the list
and also to take account of new additions

I have updated the list and it now has 375 books listed.

George P. | 422 comments I'm nearly finished with two (Kreutzer Sonata- a current botm for our group- and Count of Monte Cristo) that will make 208 for me, 55% of the 375. So I'm at least staying above half.

Yeah it would be nice if Goodreads would allow the person starting the list to waive the 100 max votes limit.

I try to keep up with the list, although I fall behind sometimes. I just remove my votes from popular books and then I have the "votes" left to add as many as I need to.

I just could not resist. Meanwhile I have read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Breakfast at Tiffany's, so now I am at 225/375 = 60.0000%.

There!

A bit of math: We add 3 books a month and 4 long a year = 3*12 + 4 = 40 books total a year. Sometimes less is a previously read book is read in another category.

If you read 2 books a month that is 24 books a year of the 40 = 60%. In other words: If you read 2 books a month and stay around for many years your will converge to 60%.

message 1359: by Luke (last edited May 08, 2022 03:40PM) (new)

Luke (korrick) 224/375 going to 59.7% rounding up to 60%, the progress being a combination of various challenge reads and the group voting in works I've already read. I know I have a few more reads marked down for 2022, so I'll make a tad more progress before I close the year with my usual 21st century focus.

I am using the read books plus currently reading number 372.

July 2018 67/227 = 29.5% (when I joined the group)
Jan. 1st, 2019 88/247 = 35.6%
Dec 31, 2019 127/276 = 46.0%
Dec 30, 2020 153/316 = 48.4%
Dec. 31, 2021 167/354 = 47.2%
May 8, 2022 173/372 46.5%

That is where I tend to stay, just below 50%. Especially after being sick last year I have decided that some goals aren't so important, but reading books I will actually enjoy becomes the priority.

I have really enjoyed my 19th Century Short Story Challenge so far this year.

message 1362: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9407 comments Mod
I agree, Lynn, that enjoying what you read is far more important than checking off boxes or maintaining percentages. I don't think my percentage has changed significantly in the last several years.

Reading short stories is such a marvelous way of sampling a variety of writers. I especially like to read modern writers when they are available, because it goes a long way toward telling me whether I ought to invest time in reading any of their longer work.

Sara (phantomswife) | 9407 comments Mod
My percentage continues to slowly fall. There were a lot of books I wanted to read with the group this year but just could not fit in.
82% in July 2021
79.4% in January 2022

Currently I have read 310/395 for 78.4%.
There are 60 books that I still wish to read from the shelf, and 25 that I don't care to read. A number of the missed reads are short stories--so, I might catch up someday.

message 1365: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5458 comments I can see how at a certain point, the percentage would go down, Sara. I bet you will catch up though.

I last checked in June of 2021, when I had 159 books - 47% at the time. I'm now at 183 out of 375, which puts me at 48%. Progress! I see a lot of books I still need to read, so I still have hopes to reach 50% ... someday!

message 1366: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2268 comments I have read 239 out of 399.

That is 59.8%. I made it to 60% in May.

I have 19 unread books that are high on my to-read list. Some I may give a chance if they show up in revisit. Two did-not-finish. And quite a few I am not going to read at all. The last category includes all the rest of Dickens.

Nice that you achieved your goal of more new books. I did much the same thing in reverse! My goal was to read more 19th Century works this year because my past reading was heavily 20th century.

I knew I would drop due to a personal reading project that focuses on books not on our shelves. There are 44 books on the shelves I want to read, but only 2 are definitely on my tbr next year. I may fall much further behind but maybe the 2023 books will be ones I am interested in.

December 4, 2012 - 21/47 = 45%, 26 books unread
April 24, 2014 - 45/84 = 54%, 39 books unread
April 6, 2015 - 66/105 = 63%, 39 books unread
April 4, 2016 - 100/142 = 70%, 42 books unread

April 9, 2018 - 180/217 = 82.9%, 37 books unread
April 5, 2019 - 212/256 = 82.8%, 44 books unread
April 2020 - Oops
April 29. 2021 - 276/333 = 82.9%, 57 books unread
December 11, 2022 - 324/399 = 81.2% 75 books unread

You have some very good books to choose from on your unread list, Bob--but then, so do I. I keep a list as well, but wish I had also broken it down by year as you have. Every year it becomes harder and harder to keep up.

message 1375: by Darren (last edited Dec 12, 2022 08:15AM) (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2148 comments since my most recent declaration 13 months ago (Nov'21: 200/355 = 56.3%)

there have been 44 titles added to our shelves
of which I have read 22
4 were read with the group
4 were catch-up
14 I had previously read

so I am now on 222/399 = 55.6%

so my percentage is slightly falling, which I attribute partly to the group keep picking more and more books by the same authors than I have already washed my hands of (naming no names!)

I am posting an end of 2022 update. My percentage stays rather consistent. I tend to read about half of the books picked by the group each year. You also were kind enough to pick 4 books I had already read ; ) . This year I reread 3 group reads, so they don't show up in the numbers. I like working on the Challenges which lead me to many other books and short stories besides just our monthly reads. That is part of the fun of this group!

July 2018 67/227 = 29.5% (when I joined the group)
Jan. 1st, 2019 88/247 = 35.6%
Dec 31, 2019 127/276 = 46.0%
Dec 30, 2020 153/316 = 48.4%
Dec. 31, 2021 167/354 = 47.2%
Dec. 31, 2022 183/394 = 46.5%

I am using the number 394 because as of December 31st that is the total of the "read" books plus the "currently reading" books... ok too complicated I know. LOL

Go to the Bookshelf - if you are on a computer desktop version of the site there will be links at the top right hand portion of the page.

https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

Once in the Bookshelf there will be book counts for different categories. We have all (401) books, (392) read, (5) currently reading, and (4) to-read. With 4 moderators and monthly polls these numbers can be a moving target!

Here's a hint that works beautifully. Start a shelf on your personal page called Catching-up-on-classics. Tag the books from the group shelf you have read. This gives a quick and easy count. I know some people have thousands and thousands of books on their shelf. This simplifies the counting. ooops I just saw your page and that you are a librarian. You probably already know all this, but it might help someone : )

Thanks for the reply. No need to apologize - yes I'm a librarian, but my expertise is limited to correcting or adding information to the records, mostly of obscure old books. I'm no expert!

The shelf is a good idea. Thanks.

December 2021 I reached 197/355 (55.49%).

A large percentage of the increase was due to focusing on the short story group shelf. I had a great time catching up on those reads!

I wonder whether that will change much by the end if the year. Of course I plan to read more of them, but the master list grows at an alarming rate! :)
