What Else Are You Reading - December 2012
I'm reading: The Magicians,The November Pick The Dirty Streets of Heaven
Starting A Song of Ice and Fire with A Game of Thrones
And Some Classics: Les Misérables, Don Quixote
Later this month I plan on finally reading the Lord of the Rings, and obviously rereading The Hobbit.
Am still going with my Julian May marathon I'm onto Diamond Mask probably the weakest out of all the exiles/ milieu books in my humble opinionAlso rereading The Darkness That Comes Before one of my favourite series of the last few years but have to concentrate to keep up with the scope
Will read the hobbit at some point this month probably after I see the film
I just finished listening Trapped, the latest installment in the Iron Druid series. I haven't decided what to listen to next.
I'm currently reading Cursed, which has been pretty good so far. Next I'll be checking out Crystal Promise the first novel by James Funfer. After that maybe The Windup Girl or The Name of the Wind.
Just started The Hobbit ,after that I'll probably go back and reread some H. Beam Piper. Maybe The Cosmic Computer and Lord Kalvan Of Otherwhen.
Finished Hamilton's second book of his Commonwealth Saga Judas Unchained. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Starting Ian Esslemont's new novel Blood and Bone A Novel of the Malazan Empire
John wrote: "I've just lemmed Feed and decided to reread Neuromancer."What didn't you like about Feed? I'm planning to read it soon but I admit I don't know too much about it.
David Sven wrote: "Starting The Black Prism. My first Brent Weeks book ever." Read it and the 2nd book as well and enjoyed both, looking forward to the 3rd.Reading Zero Day: A Novel and listening to Red Country.
Finished Star Wars: Heir to the Empire: Behind the Scenes: An Expanded Universe is Born last month so continuing with The Thrawn Trilogy with Heir to the Empire and try to finish with The Last Command before the end of the month. Then I have either The Bartimaeus Trilogy Boxed Set, His Dark Materials or Tales Of The Otori Trilogy to read next.

It was just really tedious for me; I was less than 100 pgs in but I wasn't feeling any spark or real interest in the characters.
Secondarily, I've really been wanting to reread the Gibson, and as I read The Hobbit in hardback, Neuromancer's on the nook, which I'm using as motivation to get myself back onto the elliptical for some regular exercise...
I'm re-reading Towers of Midnight.I've left it too late to do a proper Wheel of Time re-read before Memory of Light so I have decided to just get through what I can, in reverse order because I am a lunatic.
Don wrote: "Reading Zero Day: A Novel and listening to Red Country. "I'll be starting Red Country sometime this week. Steven Pacey is awesome as an audio narrator.
Feed was a real slog for me until the halfway point. From there, it got really good.I've decided to listen to The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror while decorating my Christmas tree this afternoon.
Sandi wrote: "Feed was a real slog for me until the halfway point. From there, it got really good."I'll keep that in mind when I get around to it!
Just finished Mockingjay and I must say I'm actually impressed. Most people seem to think of it as the weakest in the series, and while it definitely isn't the best, I found that it ended the series in a really nice way (maybe a bit too neatly for my taste, actually).
The one major issue I had with it is that while Katniss' POV works remarkably well in the first two books, it really doesn't fit the scope of the third too well. Feel free to check my full review here
Currently reading The Path of Daggers and 150 pages later... nothing really has happened. I'd be alright if it weren't for the characters involved, but I must say it's been an uphill battle even knowing the pace would slow down dramatically in this book.
Will probably start The Hobbit tomorrow. Having never read Tolkien I'm quite excited to finally get around to it. If I have the time I'll see if I can do a daily reading log like I did for The Dirty Streets of Heaven, it sure was a lot of fun and people seemed to like the idea.
I already finished The Hobbit so I'm going back to Tad Williams' The Dirty Streets of Heaven and I also recently got from the Humble Bundle deal thing Cory Doctorow's Pirate Cinema.

Unfortunately I think it gets worse before it gets better. However I also think it's worth it if you can push on through. Knife of Dreams and everything after it is really good as things finally start happening again.
But you're talking about 3 full books from where you are.

I'm also way too invested in the characters and the world to give up at this point, especially knowing it gets way better with Knife of Dreams. Thankfully 8-10 are among the shortest in the series, so I don't think it'll be too bad.

Yea, that's pretty much what it came down to for me. It also helped that I was flying across the country at that point of my reading. So I had 9+ hours with nothing else to do. I think that got me most of the way through either book 8 or 9.

I paused reading the Wheel of Time books when I realised I was on book 7 (I think) and he was still writing. I have a love/hate relationship with reading series that are still being written because I'm the sort of person who lines up the lot and binge reads them :)Currently reading: Seraphina & Dragon Actually (for VF)
Mostly doing PNR stuff for quick reads and to finish of challenges before Christmas! :)
Finished up The President's Vampire last night. About as good as the first in the series, but all the padding in the climax hurt it.Going to finish the series with Red, White, and Blood
I've been working on EDGE. I'm almost done with it and so far it's ok. It was sold to me as a scifi horror, where people are disappearing because the fabric of space time has been altered. Sounds interesting enough but so far, not very scary. Once I finish this, I will work on The Hobbit.
Starting Sasha in the Trial of Blood series, I'm liking it so far as kind of a medieval swords and religion story. No magic, but I'm okay with that.Sasha
Finished reading a book about culinary school, titled just that... I was listening to The Hobbit, but have moved instead to reading it on my Kindle. I found I didn't have a lot of time for listening to it. I am going to listen to The Emperor's Soul, a Brandon Sanderson novella. It's only about 4 hours long, so even with short and limited listening sessions, I should be able to get through it relatively quickly.
I'm still trying to return to normalcy with work and stuff. It's been an odd time to try to balance everything after 2 months off and trying to catch up...

I can only imagine. I hate catching up after taking a week off. Feeling better at least?

I tend to read three books at once. I've got my home book which is usually a dead tree version, my electronic book for reading on my phone when I'm away from home, and the book I listen to while at work. I've become so engrossed in my electronic book though that its made me put down the home book.Anyway, my home book is The Hobbit since its the pick of the month. I've made it halfway through but I read it so many times as a kid that I know what happens so it was an easy choice to put down.
The book that I'm in love is the Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey. I kept seeing this book on the Amazon best seller lists for Kindle and now I understand why. It is amazing.
At work I should finish Black by Ted Dekker tonight. Next, I'll probably start on a Tom Clancy book thats been sitting on my Ipod for a long time.
Just finished reading Dies The Fire by S.M. Stirling. An unusual concept and an impressive tale. I'll be reading the next Emberverse novel, at the very least.
terpkristin wrote: "Adrian wrote: "Reading Michael Chrichton's Pirate Latitudes. Looks promising"Is that one more general fiction or does it have some of his typical science-y elements?"
It's a historical novel and thus a total departure from anything else he ever wrote.
Jeff wrote: "Now listening to Before They Are Hanged Totally jazzed (is this normal?) for the Glokta chapters."When I do a reread of the Trilogy it will be a listen. Listened to Best Served Cold and The Heroes and soon Red Country. Steven Pacey is awesome.
Almost done with the Hobbit.I am also currently listening to Dennis Lehane's Live by Night.
Just finished Lev Grossman's The Magician King and have Joe Abercrombie's Before They Are Hanged on deck, sitting on my nightstand, out from the library.
I've also been storming through the Walking Dead graphic novels and have The Walking Dead, Book Seven in transit to me through the library on deck too.
And technically I've been reading the Magic Treehouse to my 4-year old too every night. :)

It has his usual attention to detail and good research, but I haven't seen much science yet.
Finished The Hobbit. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....I'm already reading another 4 books at once so think I'll wait a bit before I add another.

That's just crazy talk!

I'll start The Path of Daggers and continue reading Mockingjay which I'm about 25% into. Thus far I'm having some mixed feelings about it, the plot seems to be taking a really weird turn. But I've been pleasantly surprised by the series before, so we'll see.
