Mark Amadeus

Best remake of a great film?

message 304: by Karina (new)

Karina I don't really like remakes.

What is the most you have ever spent on a book?

message 305: by Mark (new)

Mark Probably about $300 for the Oxford English Dictionary, maybe $150 for a textbook.

If you have a book reader (including an app), which one(s)?

message 306: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments I read on my iPod touch and I use iBooks, BAM reader, or Bluefire. :D

You?

message 307: by Mark (new)

Mark the kindle app on a variety of devices

have you ever disliked a book so much you actually got into a heated argument about it, and if so, which one?

message 308: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments I don't think so. I've never even argued with someone over a book before.

You?

message 309: by Mark (last edited Feb 03, 2013 10:50PM) (new)

Mark A great many books probably seen as "controversial." Most recently,
The Republican Brain The Science of Why They Deny Science--And Reality by Chris C. Mooney .

What makes a book controversial, in your view?

message 310: by Mark (last edited Feb 03, 2013 10:57PM) (new)

Mark Yes. I've read a lot of books on neurology and neuroscience.

What are some subjects that ought to remain "taboo?" (if any)

message 311: by Mark (new)

Mark The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

is, albeit somewhat incidentally, a good biography.

Secret Survivors by E. Sue Blume is a good book about incest, by the way, well worth reading for survivors and others concerned about abuse.

What is your favorite biography?

message 312: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments I don't have one. I don't read biographies.

What is your favorite anthology?

message 313: by Mark (new)

Mark Dangerous Visions by Harlan Ellison

Favorite spy novel?

message 314: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments Out of Sight, Out of Time. Better yet, the whole Gallagher Girls series.

Favorite mystery novel?

message 315: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments Divergent. And The Hunger Games.

Favorite vampire novel?

message 316: by Nightmagic (new)

Nightmagic Magic (nightmagic) | 7 comments The drake chronicles

message 317: by Mark (last edited Feb 04, 2013 01:27AM) (new)

Mark Paul Ryan

Worst vampire novel or series?

message 318: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments House of Night.

Worst spy novel or series?

message 319: by Mark (new)

Mark Practically anything by Tom Clancy.

Best and worst Michael Crichton novels?

message 320: by Mark (new)

Mark I don't think James Patterson has (entirely) written many of the James Patterson novels. That said, Witch & Wizard was incredibly awful. The first two "Maximum Ride" novels could have been worse, for YA.. The Alex Cross novels are competent, and preferable to eating drywall.

Is James Patterson better or worse than Stephenie Meyer?

message 321: by Duchess La'Roux (new)

Duchess La'Roux | 1 comments James Patterson is better than Stephanie Meyer. Her writing is very poor, comprised of only basic sentences and scanty vocabulary.

Best and worst YA series?

message 322: by Mark (last edited Feb 06, 2013 02:42PM) (new)

Mark V wrote: "James Patterson is better than Stephanie Meyer. Her writing is very poor, comprised of only basic sentences and scanty vocabulary.

Tend to agree. It's hard to find writing more execrable than Stephenie Meyer's.

Best (recent) YA series: Seanan McGuire's October Daye series, L. A. Meyers' Jacky Faber, Lauren Oliver's Delirium, or possibly Rachel Caine's Morganville vampires

Worst (by a long shot, in all categories): Twilight

message 323: by Mark (last edited Feb 06, 2013 02:42PM) (new)

Mark Just noticed that I'd forgotten to ask a question, so I'll continue the battle of the YA authors:
Who's worse, Stephenie Meyer or Alyson Noel?

message 324: by Karina (new)

Karina I have nothing against either author. No, they are not the best writer's i've seen but they are also not the worst. I enjoy Meyer's work more than Noel's.

Who is your favorite author?

message 325: by Mark (new)

Mark James Joyce

I have nothing against Meyer or Noel, personally. I just think they write atrociously bad prose and manufacture terrible plots.

Who is "the worst writer [you've] seen?"

message 326: by Karina (new)

Karina E. L. James is who comes to mind at the moment. (I was just talking about her). Ohh and Alicia K. Leppert. There are a few more, though.

What is your favorite children's book?

message 327: by Mark (new)

Mark E. L. James is a good choice (for worst of the worst). I hadn't heard of Leppert, but having now read a description of her (one and only) novel, I'd have to agree.

Favorite children's book: god bless the gargoyles by Dav Pilkey

Why do you think it has become impossible to sell a YA novel that doesn't include a romance with a supernatural creature? (Well, not really. I guess Hunger Games is an exception, but the observation seems to hold, generally.)

message 328: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments I guess it's because not many people/teens buy them anymore. They prefer to read (and write) something entirely new. Something the world has never thought of. Vampires, werewolves, banshees, even aliens. I guess it's also because of the love story. I find it more romantic when people of two different species fight the odds just to be together.

You?

message 329: by Mark (new)

Mark I don't know. I do like the distancing-from-reality of paranormal stories, but that said, I'd have thought vampires and werewolves would have got pretty stale by now. Your explanation for the romantic angle rings true.

Can you think of a book with a really funny title? (e.g., "Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse?")

message 330: by Gatha (new)

Gatha (gatha) | 421 comments If You Can't Live Without Me, Why Aren't You Dead Yet?!

Name a single book that you will keep on reading for the rest of your life.

Mark Becket, in Murder in the Cathedral

Favorite humorous character in a book?

message 337: by Lucille (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments Jace from The Mortal Instruments? I can't think of anyone else at the moment.

Would you ever name your [future] kids after a book character? If so, what?

message 338: by Mark (new)

Mark I'm far too old to have any. But I might have. Thomas (after Thomas of Becket) or Anne (after Anne of Green Gables). Of course, Becket, the martyred Archbishop of Canterbury, was also a real historical figure.

Would you?

message 339: by Lucille (last edited Feb 10, 2013 02:02AM) (new)

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments Yes. I would name them Wellesandra (Wellsie) and Xhexania (Xhex) which are both from BDB. For a boy, probably Noah (Mara Dyer) or Kaidan (Sweet Evil), Adrian or Dimitri (VA).

Do you have plans to write a book? Or do you simply want to be a reader?

message 340: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) A reader. :)

Most beautiful name you've encountered in a book?

Beatrice's question: Most beautiful name you've encountered in a book?

Lucille (lucillep) | 3277 comments Who Are You from CSI.

Favorite time of the year?

message 348: by Mark (new)

Mark I never shop in stores anymore, except for groceries, so it would have to be amazon.com.

Do you subscribe to Netflix?

message 349: by Mark (new)

Mark No.

Someone previously made reference to "BDB" (which I assume is a book or a movie). What is it?

message 350: by Mark (new)

Mark I looked back, and it was Lucille who mentioned "BDB" as a source of names for children, so I'm thinking not. I assumed it was the acronym for a book title, but not one I'd ever heard of. I have no interest in S&M.

Do you ever browse the Amazon free kindle books?
