1.Read a fantasy novel-Undead and Unemployed

How are you enjoying the Undead series? I've read the first 5 books for this challenge.... :) Looks like you're doing something similar...

8. For April Fools Day…
- Read a humorous novel, a book of jokes, OR
- A biography/autobiography/memoir of a comedian.
I read A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, by Xiaolu Guo
It was really funny - it had me laughing out loud in numerous places (it's very sad in places too). I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you've ever tried to teach English to foreign language students - or stood in a border queue at Heathrow airport wondering why it was marked 'Aliens'...

I'm halfway through a couple other tasks so I'll wait on those. Also, do I need to change my "name?" I don't see any other Sarah's (with an "h") but I'm probably missing something. Let me know!

Has anyone read Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire The Methods and Madness Inside Room 56 - if so, what do you think of Rafe?

That a girl, Rory, prioritize :)

Have you been accepted already and how long did it take? When I applied I heard back the next day and a friend of mine on here applied and she didn't hear anything for awhile but then they accepted her. She had enough books so it must have just been how busy they are but I'm wondering about your experience.
Also, the GR Librarians Group which someone linked above is a nice place to go and ask questions or to go to when you need help. I've always asked first if it's anything I wasn't sure of and it's been a lot of help.
Ugh....now I'm having a tough time with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I may trade it in for something else for that task but I haven't decided yet. I'm going to give it a few more days. I'm not used to reading so slow and when a book makes me read this slow it gets to me. :(

Yes, and dishes, and in some remote cases, tending to the little furry creatures that leave hair balls all about my furniture.

I've already posted on Catalyst, and I just wanted to say I didn't like The Host at all. It didn't need to be so long, and it was quite predictable. It was also very repetitive, and that got rather annoying. I ended up racing through the last hundred pages or so because I wanted it to be over, not because I wanted to know what happened. After all the hype, it was very disappointing.

In This Our Life by Ellen Glascow
This was one of the most depressing books I've ever read. By the end of it I was ready to do something drastic--it made the Grapes of Wrath look like Pollyanna!

#5 BONNIE’S TASK – Read a book outside your normal genre: [b:Equus|962811|Equus (Penguin Plays)|Peter Shaffer|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1179......"
I hope you like those two books. I love the Uglies Trilogy and wasn't that into Extras, but it's pretty different. It is definitely worth reading for anyone who read the other ones. I never finished Hawkes Harbor but will try to someday. I love S.E. Hinton, so, when I was in Madrid looking for a book to read on the plane home, I spotted it. However, it so different from her other works.

1.Read a fantasy novel-[b:Undead and Unemployed|153193|Undead and Unemployed (Undead Series, Book 2)|MaryJanice Davidson|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1172......"
I've been loving the series. They are a lot of fun to read and I find myself laughing out loud quite often. So far I have read the first 6 but I'm waiting to read the 7th one until it comes out in paperback or I have money to buy more books. I'm hoping that will be soon because I really want to know what happens next.

Only ended up taking about half a day.

That sounds like how it was with me too. Maybe we got lucky and they weren't busy!

This brings my total to 255 points.

I don't know if anyone else responded to this yet, I haven't gotten that far yet, but I think the movie is really cute. It is definitely a movie for a younger audience, but it basically about a boy who is able to overcome his fears because of the library, and books! And it is a really quick introduction to a lot of the classics, like Dr. Jekyll, Treasure Island etc. If you have kids, it is a great movie to watch with them! I watched it all the time when I was growing up, and loved it, and I watched it with my little brothers recently, who really liked it too.

I've read it! I think his methods are great, but it seems like he spends around 16 hours a day doing things for his class and other things fall by the wayside. I know when I teach, I want to be able to be a great teacher, but also raise a family. Basically the book was him tooting his own horn, but some great teaching ideas.

#3 Read a past OR present TNBBC group read that you haven't read before: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. FOUR STARS!
If you are a fan of historical fiction, the circus or reading about the Depression this is the book for you! I thoroughly enjoyed this little gem of a book. I thought the story was well researched; the plot made me want to read more, and the characters (even the antagonists) were lovable in their own way.
If you are concerned about the controversy surround the cruelty to animals portrayed in the book just remember CONTEXT.

1. KAREN’S TASK - The Reader and Gone
25 points, making my total 255.
The Reader was great:
Bernhard Schlink's The Reader begins in Germany with a strange love story. An older version of his narrator, Michael, recalls his youth and his love affair as a teen with an older woman that would forever shape his life. The affair is not sick and the woman, Hanna, is interesting and easy to like. Years later, after her sudden disappearance, a college-aged Michael finds himself face-to-face with Hanna as she is tried for her part in WWII war crimes. Readers will find themselves just as shocked as Michael and question how they too could even care for someone who was a former Nazi concentration camp guard. Schlink brings up emotions while not playing the blame game. He uses Hanna to combat the idea that that only sick people would have carried out evil duties. The plot is not so straight forward. Hanna has her ghosts and her own secret which Michael has figured out and struggles on whether or not to reveal it. In the end, the novel is about Michael and how he deals with his past just as how new and old generations of Germans have had to do. The novel is well written and is entirely deserving of its praise
So was Gone:
Michael Grant's Gone is not your typical post-apocalypse novel. He creates a world where adults have vanished, leaving the youth to rise up and survive. Along with the normal fear, struggle, and drastically changed world, there are super-natural powers, eerie barriers, and animal mutations, as well as, an underlying evil. Grant skillfully weaves these themes and his characters into a successful and thrilling plot. There is no doubt that readers will be rooting for the good kids to prevail while jumping out of their socks during frightening parts. Since there are many scenes that would be better handled by a maturer audiences, this book is best suited for the older side of Young Adults.

If we change one or more of our books that we originally listed, do we need to post the change?
I've tweaked my list a bit, but I'm not sure whether or not I have to post it here, or just claim the points as I go.
Thanks and happy reading!

You don't have to list any changes unless they alter your points in some way- so Cynthia can keep track. Unless you want to post them! :)

If you listen to audiobooks, you can do both at the same time. (Let's be honest--that's the ONLY way I'm going to clean house...)
For the librarian thing--I think it took a day or two for me. Must have been busy.
Yes, you don't need to list changes unless you're changing a book you've already reported to a different task. Good thing, too--I change my mind all the time!
Also...... technically The Host is not a YA novel.... It's been read by tons of YA people, because of the Twilight series, but it's categorized as an adult SciFi novel..... The description on goodreads says so in the first sentence.

Thank you!

I thought the affair was very strange (nothing one minute, then BAM! Affair... And the dynamics of the relationship were very strange to me as well.) I did not like Hanna at all- or Michael either for that matter. I couldn't identify with either one of them. I felt that Hanna was very wooden and cold, and Michael was clingy, whiny, and unrealistic- both when he was young and as an adult.
And maybe this is just my pet peeve, but it really aggravated me when Michael, narrating, would tell us about something he couldn't remember. It happened several times throughout the book, and I was like "Enough already, don't tell us if you can't remember it!" Haha...

Sorry you didn't enjoy it! I was very pleased with it especially since it was a different take on a Holocaust book. I noticed Michael saying the same thing, too. I didn't know if it was intentional or a result of translation.

I'm really looking forward to finding out what the 50 pt task is going to be!

In her self-founded children's literature periodical, The Guardian of Education, Trimmer introduced the terms "Books for Children" (for those under fourteen) and "Books for Young Persons" (for those between fourteen and twenty-one), establishing terms of reference for young adult literature that remain in use today.
I thought this site might be useful to anyone looking for ideas:

I read it and found it inspirational--but not doable for me. I've been teaching for a while (16 years) and found that I could tweak his ideas and I think it imporoved my overall teaching. but as April (I think) said, it is also important for me to have a life outside of the classroom and that is not possible with the time and energy he gives to his kids. (I greatly admire him for being able to do so though)

I think Cynthia also said earlier that you can listen while you walk, but you may want to get that confirmed.

6. JON’S TASK - read a Non-Fiction book of at least 400 pages relating in some way to the British Monarchy past or present. Write a short Goodreads review and post a copy on the Spring challenge thread. --- Sovereign Ladies The Six Reigning Queens of England by Maureen Waller
I wasn’t really looking forward to this particular task (sorry Jon!) because I’m not terribly interested in the British monarchy. I did, however, find Sovereign Ladies interesting. It provides concise biographies of the 6 Queens Regnant (a queen who is an actual ruler and not just the wife of a king – I had to look it up) of British history. Because I knew next to nothing about Mary I, Elizabeth I, Mary II, Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II, the stories were informative. I was surprised to find that the way the early queens were able to rule in spite of their stringent patriarchal society was to be thought of as having two bodies, one the weak and feeble woman who was subject to her husband if she had one, and the other the body politic – the sovereign who had masculine qualities. In other words, they were essentially an honorary man since it was thought that women were incapable of being rulers. The author’s conversational tone made for a fairly light read although the section on Victoria got a little bogged down in names, places and dates for me. I gave it 4 stars.
