Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments I just finisehd Twilight for 10 point #10 (pick a five-star book from someone who joined at same time I did)

I know there has been a lot of discussion about this book, so I'll keep it short--I wish I had read it before the movie and before I knew all the hype. I think I would have found it an enjoyable book, but I had a hard time getting past the thought of all the young girls reading about Bella saying I can give everything up because you are my whole life. I can see why people like it--it's a great story, but I don't know if I'll read the others or not.

I love the Ender series too! My friend bought them for me on my 13th birthday, and I didn't really appreciate them until I'd read them many times. My favorites were the sequel Speaker for the Dead and the parallel novel Ender's Shadow.

I liked this book a lot- it was awhile ago when I read it so it's slowly coming back to me right now but I only picked it up because Hinton wrote it and was pleasantly surprised with it.

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Jeez, I guess I post a lot more than I thought! LOL I hope you find some good books that you want to read. I'm pretty obsessive so there are a good amount to pick from. I just don't have the hundred lists like some people although I'd love to go through and make a YA list, a memoir list, etc. I just don't even want to think about trying that with over 2,000 books. Maybe someday!

Steph Completed a 25-point task:
9. SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words.

I read Rats Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants by Robert Sullivan

I definitely would not have thought to pick this one up if a friend hadn't recommended it - and I enjoyed it! As it turns out, rats are fascinating creatures - not that I want to cuddle up to one anytime soon - and he ties his study in with really interesting historical info about New York.

message 3171: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Completed another 25 point task! Me and You Too: Catalyst - Bob Harvey - for a book outside my normal genre. I don't know if anyone has seen this book before, but its really unique. Not so much in plotlines/story as in its typography. It is advertised as teh first "Full-Color" novel. Each page is like a magazine, with a backgroud, words are different colors and fonts that "match" what their meaning is. For example the word "upside-down" is acutally printed upside-down and words like descending, actually seem to be falling off the line. It was a little hard to read becuase of this, but it did make it more interesting. I have definitely never read anything like it. The story was just average though...

Anyway, that puts my point total at 210

It is on my list as one of the best YA trilogies, with the first in the trilogy being my favorite. I remember that I bought it randomly at the bookstore one day, finished it that afternoon, and had to go BACK to the bookstore that night because I couldn't wait to get the next one, Rebel Angels. LOL. Needless to say, I highly recommend the whole trilogy.

I will be reading the third and fourth books of the #1 Detective Agency series, both of which are on Jenny's list. By the way, HBO is having a series based upon these books that I believe starts tonight at 8 PM EST. Anthony Mingella (sp?) created it before he died last year. Jill Scott plays the lead.

Did you look through the previous posts? If it was awhile ago it would probably be too hard but if it was in the last few days you might be able to find it fairly easily.

I started reading this a few months ago and couldn't get into it at all. I'm hoping I'll get more into it the next time around because I really wanted it for awhile before I actually bought it and am still looking forward to reading it.

I'm glad everyone liked it! And it seems like it would be a really great book group book. There is so much to discuss. And lots of interesting opinions could come out of it.

6. British Monarchy: Brief Lives of the English Monarchs by Carolly Erickson.

This book gives thumbnail sketches of the kings and queens of England, from William the Conqueror to the current Elizabeth II. If you're looking for a book to teach you about English history through the lives of the monarchs, you should look elsewhere. Although the important events of each reign are mentioned, this book is really about the monarchs themselves. What Erickson does best is make them all human. Whether they've been vilified (i.e., King John of Robin Hood fame and Richard II) or lionized (Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria), kings and queens tend to seem larger-than-life. But Erickson gives insights into both there talents and their flaws. It's really their flaws that make them more interesting; and also make you wonder how the country wasn't run into the ground with some of the people who were in charge of it.

Another interesting aspect is how each royal line has it's own strengths and flaws that seem to haunt each generation. The Plantagenet's weren't deemed successful if they weren't skilled at war, the Tudors generally had brilliant minds, the Stuarts were rather conceited and ineffective and the Hanovers were usually rather horrid parents that tended to hate their heirs (and, sadly, were rarely as smart as the Tudors).

Each monarch gets about 10-15 pages, which makes it a good book to pick up at bedtime and read a few chapters. It's too confusing if you try to read it straight through; it really is better to read about a couple monarchs and then come back to it later and read about the next couple.

I have a decent background in English history, which certainly helps me to keep track of what is happening. You probably want at least a grasp of the basic history of England before you attempt this. I found it fascinating and it inspired me to learn more, especially about monarchs I hadn't thought about much.

Total Points: 265

Also, despite what it says on GoodReads and Amazon, my copy of the book has 434 pages. I don't know why it's different than what Amazon says it has.

Lauren H. (laurenahughes) | 23 comments I just finished The Sorrow of War for A book that has been translated from it's original language. It was translated to English from Vietnamese. War is one genre that I have almost never read, but this was required for a class I am taking. I will admit I was a bit surprised to find that it is really good. The Sorrow of War is a fictional account of the Vietnam War. I will definitely be recommending it to friends and family.

That brings my new total to 75 points. I am eagerly waiting for the end of my class in a couple of weeks so that I can devote more time to personal reading!
