Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I think I got most of my list together...I have a few holes that I'll fill in as time goes on. I put my list on the first page where I commented about the challenge.

Thank you Cynthia for all your answers to my questions and for doing this challenge. You really do a great job. :~)

message 254: by Fallon (new)

Fallon | 120 comments Memorial and Armed Forces Day - would birdsong by sebastion faulks be acceptable?

For holiday task, i've never left australia, so would a book based here be okay, or should it be more specific to region?

message 255: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Birdsong is fine. Fallon - you could use a city in Australia that you have visited but never lived in for that task.

message 256: by Fallon (new)

Fallon | 120 comments 4. Epistolary Novel - would bridget jones diary suit?
i can't think of anything else besides anne frank and i'd prefer to read something i haven't read
Thanks! You do a great job cynthia!!

I just finished it about 1.5 hours ago. Bawled by eyes out. It was really really good.

message 258: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (maggie4007) | 116 comments Cynthia,

For the April Showers Bring May Flowers task, could the flower be someone's name in the title? I was thinking about The Enchantment of Lily Dahl: A Novel.

Thanks for all of you hard work on this, it's going to be so great!

message 259: by Cynthia (last edited Feb 23, 2009 05:30PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Bridget Jones is fine and so is The Enchantment of Lily Dahl.

Big Thanks to our wonderful mod Lori for creating a separate folder for the challenge.

message 260: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments Wow, we got our own folder! Awesome!

Also, for good epistolary novels there is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (I read it for the Winter Challenge and loved it), 84, Charing Cross Road (tons of people recommended it; probably what I'm reading) and if you're into YA, you could go with Sorcery and Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot Being the Correspondence of Two Young Ladies of Quality Regarding Various Magical Scandals in London and the Country or its sequels.

Also, would it be possible to set up a separate thread for ideas of books that fulfill the tasks? This thread is already 6 pages long and I don't think people are going through all the posts when they're trying to decide which books to read.

message 261: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I hope The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and 84, Charing Cross Road are good, because I'm reading BOTH of them for this challenge--the former for the epistolary novel and the latter as a TNBBC group read!

I've already switched some of my books around. I'm going to read Inkheart for my fantasy (maybe) and Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl for my translated book. I forgot to work Anne Frank in, and I need to read it for Book Club.

Angela | 1934 comments Does anyone know a way to search for a character's name in a book. My mom's name is Pam/ Pamela and I have been looking at all of the summaries of my books and this is taking forever!!

Couldn't we just read a book with the word mom or mother in it?? That is what I call her :)

message 271: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I found an author with my mom's name and it has the word mom in the title.

Why Moms Are Weird Pamela Ribon

I know it is a stretch!

message 272: by Jon (new)

Jon Joanna i proably misled you a bit with me saying i just watched a youtube post, sorry - i couldnt help myself for having a look around on there to see what there was but im not doing any reading till March 1.

message 273: by Cynthia (last edited Feb 23, 2009 06:38PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Angela - that's fine the task says author or character. I was going to suggest The Moon in the Mango Tree by Pamela Binnings Ewen.

message 274: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Thanks Cynthia! I totally missed seeing author as an option :)

message 275: by Bonnie (last edited Feb 23, 2009 07:02PM) (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments Stephanie--I've read both The Book of Lost Things and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Great choices! Those are two of my favorite books. You put together a really great list that I almost want to read. (I love Catch-22 and The Scarlet Letter, too. Even though I was one of the only ones in my English class who liked Scarlet Letter; but Pearl was such an interesting character!).

message 276: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments I'm going to Bali in a few weeks time and I dont know of any novels set there. Is it okay to read a non-fiction as there is a book called Bali 9:The Untold Story which I would be happy to read.

message 277: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments Does anyone know of a book with a main character called Dorothy other than The Wizard of Oz.

message 278: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I know an author named Dorothy who writes excellent books: Dorothy Koomson (My Best Friend's Girl)

message 279: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I see some people are using Libba Bray's books for 'magic' or Stephanie Meyers or books with vampires or witches. Is this suitable?

message 280: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Melody - non-fiction is fine, Charlene Ann Baumbich has a series called Dearest Dorothy, and Jeanne M. Dams has a series called Dorothy Martin mysteries.

Dorothy Garlock
Dorothy Gilman
Dorothy L. Sayers

message 281: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Libba Bray works for magic, Stephenie Meyers books are not about magic so no (they would count as fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal)...other books about witches/vampires might it just depends on the book.

Oh, Angela, I've only started listening to audio book a few months ago and I have to say I'm really enjoying it! Just make sure that the book is something that you'd be really interested in, the audio book is a professionaly done one, and you like the reader's voice. The ones I liked so far are People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks & read by Edwina Wren and The Host by Stephanie Meyer & read by Kate Reading. The lastest one I heard was The Alchemist (Paulo Coelho) & read by Jeremy Irons.

Bonnie | 271 comments Wow, that's a really ambitious and impressive list, Jon! If you finish Ulysses I will be forever in awe of you. I'm working up the courage to even think about beginning it.

Meghan (meghanly) | 218 comments I love that we have our own folder now!! So much easier to find. Cynthia and Lori ROCK!

message 290: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (klonk) I'm going to try to do as much of this challenge I can by just reading books that either me or my boyfriend owns, so that I finally make my To Be Read pile of books smaller.

Would Catch 22 fit for the "In Honor of Memorial and Armed Forces Day – Read a book about a veteran OR someone serving in the military"-task?

Angela, I hate audiobooks, too! But I see that you have a lot of David Sedaris on your list, and he is actually great on audiobook. They're funny, and the shorter vignettes seem to hold my attention better than a long story does (I tend to not pay attention if the book isn't in front of me). So you might want to give him a try on audio

Angela | 1934 comments Thanks Jen! I will do that because I really was not sure which author or book to use. I love to read, but I just think my mind will wander if I do the audio...

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments Anyone have any suggestions for an author or character with the name Joyce in it?

In Honor of Mother’s Day…
- Read a book where the author/main character shares the same first name as your mother OR…
- Read a book recommended by/given to you by your mother.

Maggie (maggie4007) | 116 comments Joyce Carol Oates? I've read and liked a few of her books...

Jon Bonnie Thanks for the comments, actually my challenge this challenge is not to get so obsessive and plan my whole life around needing to get a book crossed of the list and how long it will take another chapter/finish this book!. So im going to try to take a bit of a step back in this one, ive got my list and ill just pick them up and see how i go without worrying about the scorecard too much. (easy to say now though lol!) - my last 2 Winter challenge books seem to be taking for ever! but ill get em done in Feb by hook or by crook!.
Oh.. Ulysses, yes a tad ambitious too, but heres the trick, i saw an audiobook at the library and turns out is abridged too, so will be bearable - ive had a sneak listen to a bit then put away for march - lots of great Irish accents!. I guess i wanted to feel i knew some ofthe book and its style without beating myself over the head with it - i can safely say theres no way im reading the whole tome!

Melody im curious about The Year of Living Dangerously set in Bali (or at least somewhere in Indonesia which is the same country) and i always loved the movie - Linda Blair won best Sup Actress (how good were the oscars everyone?! ..oh sorry off topic) had a young Mel Gibson ...its on my TBR list and anyone else is tempted, im thinking its written by an aussie so works for ANZAC task -Yep just checked hes born in Tasmania and moved to Sydney

Lisa you could use James Joyce if your brave!

message 297: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Ros - since you haven't posted your books on gr then you may go to the books you have at home and pick the book you've had the longest but haven't read yet. You may use a past trip for the spring break task.

Catch 22 is fine.

Joyce Character
Thanks for the Memories
Everything Will Be All Right
Ordinary Monsters
I Wish I Had a Red Dress

Bonnie | 271 comments Does Cybele's and Spells rhyme? I pronounce Cybele as sigh-bel which would make it rhyme but I have no idea if that is correct (btw, the full title is Cybele's Secret).

Oh, and hey, I found a site that shows which words rhyme with whatever word you type in. Not perfect, but helps to generate ideas (it's really best with one-syllable words).
