Ashley No points as of yet, but I finished the first half of the 15.7 task with The Blithedale Romance today. It was much more interesting than I thought it would be, although less enjoyable since I was under time constraints because I was reading it for school. Thank goodness I will graduate in 2 weeks! Then I can really get on with this challenge!

25 POINT TASK

#9 SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words (2/28/09 – 3/20/09)

Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer

If I could give this one a "conflicted" rating I would. I loved some things in this book but not the book in its whole. I think this could have been whittled down to a few powerful short stories.

message 2618: by Sara ♥ (last edited Mar 20, 2009 08:11PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) All right. I finally have some serious points going on. I have completed the following tasks since my last report:

Task 15.1 - Scorpio - Holes - It was almost EXACTLY like the movie, except that Stanley was chubby in the book, and lost weight at Camp Green Lake. I really enjoyed it.

Task 25.3 - Two of Maggie's books - Undead and Unwed and Undead and Unemployed. These books (vampire romance novels) are HILARIOUS! I'm now reading Book 3 (Undead and Unappreciated) and will read that, Book 4, and Book 5 for Task 15.10

Task 25.4 - BBC Top 100 - Winnie-the-Pooh - I think everyone who enjoyed Winnie the Pooh as a child should read these books. They're written in a very... unique way, which is pretty funny. My favorite part was all the capitalization. It was like all the phrases were proper nouns... "Bear of Very Little Brains", "Wedged Bear in Great Tightness", "Stoutness Exercises"... things like that. It was really amusing.

I believe that brings me up to 150 points. I've also completed tasks 5.2, 5.4, 10.4, 10.6, 15.2, 15.6, half of 15.7 (no points yet), and 25.5. Let me know if that's not right.

message 2631: by Ashley (last edited Mar 20, 2009 10:37PM) (new)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I just finished Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez for Bonnie's task. This book is not something that I would normally have read at all. And, I can't say that I'm that glad I read it. It was definitely not my favorite. I was a little distrubed by the 36 year old man in love with a 12 year old little girl. Some of the writing was good, but overall, Ugh. I kinda wish I had picked something else. It wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't call it good either.

The more I keep thinking about it though, the more Ugh I feel about it. I was not a fan.

That does give me a total of 205 though!

message 2632: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've never heard of that book, Ashley but your description of it reminds me of Lolita. Have you read that one?

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments Becky wrote: "I've never heard of that book, Ashley but your description of it reminds me of Lolita. Have you read that one? "

I haven't read it yet. It is on my list to read because so many people have called it a classic, but I am a little hesitant. I haven't heard much about it, other than references like, I had to remind myself you were no Lolita... I don't care who you are- with that type of age difference, it is not love, and you are not some nice older guy- you are a pedophile... It's just creepy to me.

I was also a little disappointed in the story here. Even before it got creepy, I wasn't in anyway invested in the characters. The writing just really didn't do it for me. I was bored when I wasn't going Ugh. The little girl even tells him (while they are lying next to each other on the bed...) that he is a wrinkled old man. It just wasn't for me.

message 2635: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I can understand that Ashley. That's a difficult subject, and is definitely not for everyone.

I haven't read Lolita, but from what I have heard about it, it seems more like rape and obsession than mutual feelings of love. In Of Love and Other Demons, they are both "in love" and it's just weird. More than that though, the writing style never captured my attention.
Have you read Lolita? If you have, what did you think of it?

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Elizabeth (NC) - Wow! I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything about Salter Path other than my parents, haha. They used to go there when they were young and in love. Since then, my family's gone to Atlantic Beach every summer for almost as long as I can remember. I miss it greatly now :-(

El, I was under the impression that you could read a non-fiction book about one of those diarists. I chose John Adams by David McCullough, is that not going to count? I don't want to start it if it won't.

From what I understand it is a non-fiction book about the diarist, OR a diary written by the person. You can do either one, so I think John Adams would still count.

Amy

Just finished Wesley the Owl (25.2) and though I admit, I cried at the end, the writing overall was a bit sappy (no pun intended). This was my virgin-read in the genre and I found O'Brien's story often engaging with some surprising bits and pieces of information that I've already shared with my snake-hating Mom and my husband, Nature Man.

Elizabeth - I've given in...The Murderous Urges of Ordinary Women has been purchased !

El - I'm heading out the door to pick up The Midwife's Tale by Ulrich for 25.2 having temporarily abandoned Virginia to the summer challenge :)
