Beth F | 342 comments Judith said: I want to do 84 Charing Cross Road, but it's only 97 pages. Bummer. I guess I'll try I Capture the Castle instead.

Maybe you could try a different version? I borrowed a version from the library that was more than 100 pages (not by much--I think it had 112???) and read it for the epistolary challenge.

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Has anyone read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson?
I started it for one of the YA books and I'm not too far into it but am trying to hear what others thought.

message 2356: by [deleted user] (new)

Eve-- I have it on my list to read, but the movie ended up on tv this week-end. If the book is like the movie, I thought it was good. It's an age old topic, but with a different twist.

Oh my goodness Eva. I LOVED that book! I really hope you like it! It is really well written, and makes you think. It is also really interesting to me, because there is very little dialouge from the main character. You will have to tell me what you thought when you finish. It is one of my favorite YA books.
I am a big fan!

I will let you know. Usually I read and then not pay much attention to reviews unless I know the person reviewing but have you seen the reviews for this? There is one that stands out and it's one of the first ones. What stood out to me was that this girl really disliked this book and she's only about 14. What made me really notice her was that she was really well spoken. Or well typed I should say. LOL
You should check out the review. I have to say I'm in disagreement with her so far but I'm not too far in the book yet. Thanks for the post and I'll definitely let you know- have you read any others by her? I bought Twisted at the same time I bought this and haven't got to that yet.

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Ugh....now I counted 110 so I know I'm tired now if I can't even count. Maybe I'm wrong all together.....

Okay, I knew something was wrong somewhere...and it was me. LOL And I'm still awake....reading Speak and on-line. Hahaha...That's exactly what I was doing.
I like to look at the books others are reading but I had the page opened only halfway because I was doing something else on another site.
I'm going to bed!

I've read Catalyst and Twisted. I loved Twisted, and I liked Catalyst. Twisted was really interesting to me, because there really just aren't as many book written from a guys perspective. I felt like it was very... honest. She didn't try to sugar coat things, and I actually felt like I was listening to his thoughts, not what someone thought he might think. (If that makes sense...) And, I absolutely loved the ending to the book. He develops a lot as a person, and you can feel that. The endings to bigs are a big deal to me- they can really make or break a book for me- and the whole ending is amazing. I love books that have a lot of character growth, where you can really feel that the protagonist has changed as a person, and I felt that this one did. I don't want to say more, cuz I don't want to ruin anything, but that is another one I'd like to know what you thought of.

message 2368: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments Eva, I am assuming the review is from Alex? I think it was a good, well written review, but I disagree with her. One of her main arguments is that people don't get upset when their friends turn into crazy mean people, and stop talking to them...

If I had a horrible experience, and all the people who should have supported me snubbed me, and treated me like a pariah, I'd be upset too! (And I feel like she handeled it fairly well.) I would actually be more concerned for someone who didn't care that their friends turned against them, because, from a psychological perspective, that is unnatural, especially at that age... I don't know. It was a well written reveiw, but I feel like she entirely missed the point. Makes me wonder what she actually got out of Ulysses, and EE Cummings...

I really hope you like it!!

Ashley wrote: "Question- I want to read a book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez for the Cinco de Mayo task. The info I have says he was born in Columbia, but lives in Mexico now, and his books are translated from Spanis..." - Sorry that won't work

For DARLA'S task - you DO NOT have to have seen the movie during the challenge BUT you do have to have seen the movie at some point during your life - the book needs to have been mentioned or seen in the film - YOU ALSO CAN'T for example read Harry Potter because you've seen a Harry Potter and it says Harry Potter in it - so books of the same name as the film do not count.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I finished a 10 point task.

10. Members of the TNBBC have great tastes in books - follow these directions to find your book for this task...
- Start by going to the club’s membership list.
- Sort the member list by the Date Joined and Find Yourself on that list. (I chose the date joined sorting option because the page you will find your name on for the other options will change more often)
- Read a book that earned a 5-Star rating by another member who is on the same page as you.

I read Darkly Dreaming Dexter

Ha! Just raking my brain for that! But look like the guy at IMDB just forgot one of the most important books in the film: Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe. It's the first book the hero reads, and the one he becomes book people for.

Ps. I lovvvvvvveeee this film! It's brighter and gives more hope than the book version. But a friend of mine called it "a horror movie for book lovers". :D
