EDIT: OK THIS THREAD IS CLOSED! PROCEED TO POLL BELOW FOR TOP 10!

I picked mostly smutty and tried to mix genres from suggestions here! One of them I was already gonna pick for January so it's not on the list, but don't be alarmed, you'll read it very soon :)

There are tons of great books here, so I wouldn't be surprised if we pick from this list again in the future, thanks all!

XOOX
Felicia

Hey all! So for holiday spirit we're tossing it to YOU GUYS for December Main and Alt picks! To be able to narrow it down properly:

-You guys leave your suggestion here on this thread as to what we should read
-On November 15th I'll close this thread and pick 10 from here to put in a poll
-You guys vote from those 10 on what we should choose
-The top two books will be the picks for December!

Sound good/fair/awesome?

Rebecca (autumnrls) | 9 comments *Rosemary and Rue, Seanan McGuire
*The Valley of Horses, Jean Auel (2nd book, the first one is awesome, but Bonnie wouldn't like it because one part gets rape-y. Valley has some really great sexy time in it, however, and is just a really great story overall)
*Guilty Pleasures, Laurell K. Hamilton

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sflanagan19) | 127 comments I suggest the first book in the Underworld Detection Agency, Under Wraps, by Hannah Jayne. It's a fun urban fantasy mystery with some steamy bits in it.

message 4: by Laura (new)

Laura *Lunatic Fringe
Lunatic Fringe by Allison Moon
*Alison's Wonderland
Alison's Wonderland by Alison Tyler

Julie (subtleseasonings) | 88 comments Angel's Blood by Nalini Singh. I think this is her best series!

message 7: by Dajinxed1 (new)

Dajinxed1 | 95 comments Wolfsbane and Mistletoe an anthology

The Magical Christmas Cat an anthology

Hot for the Holidays an anthology

Dark Celebration by Christine Feehan book 17 in her Dark series.

message 8: by Liv (new)

Liv (liviebutton) Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier :P

message 9: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Ferguson Edmondson | 17 comments I suggest checking out the Romance Writers of America website (www.rwa.org) and look at the books that have won awards. http://www.rwa.org/cs/2012RITAGH
There is an excellent chance of finding something satisfying there.

One I read a while back was a time-travelish book called "Seducing Mr. Darcy" by Gwen Cready about a woman who is accidentally transported into "Pride and Prejudice," returns to present day, and discovers that every copy of Pride and Prejudice in print is beginning to change because of what she did while inside the book.

There are some highly entertaining sex scenes (including one that involves a dumb waiter). The author won a Golden Heart award (for unpublished authors) for that book, and it won her her first publishing contract.

The books listed on the RWA site that won RITA awards are (or at least WERE) in print, whereas the Golden Heart awards are for unpublished writers. Those books may or may not have been picked up by publishers.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sflanagan19) | 127 comments Finding Gaia by Kimberly Chapman would also be a good pick--she's a self-published author who's also part of this book club!

message 11: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackpurdy) | 120 comments I tend to have more contemporary stuff on my shelf, so these recs are from traditionally contemporary authors doing the fantasy thing.

For some lighter stuff, there is Dogs and Goddesses by Jennifer Crusie, Anne Stuart, and Lani Diane Rich or The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes by Jennifer Crusie, Eileen Dreyer and Anne Stuart. Both are really more in the vein of contemporary with a light fantasy/magic twist, but Jennifer Crusie makes me laugh every single freaking time.

Nora Roberts' Circle Trilogy starts with Morrigan's Cross - vampires, sorcerers, Celtic magicky stuff. Also fairly light and easy.

Also - could we get the date for the December hangout? Looks like the holidays might mess up the normal schedule, and I was hoping to go ahead and get some dates nailed down for our local meetups! :)

message 12: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 2 comments I definitely think you should consider, or at least look at, the In Her Name series. It's not the most romance oriented ever... but it does have a strong romance thread to it. The main character is a man, but it is a science fiction series, and one with good romance is hard to find, and I feel like you've done primarily fantasy up until now. I really liked it and thought it was a good series and it had a lot of depth.

message 13: by Christa (new)

Christa (trixie360) Um, this isn't romance. Nor fantasy. BUT it has murder, lots of sexytimes (that have made grown men blush) and VIDEOGAMES!! And I wrote it. Is it against the rules to nominate your own book? Schooled (Lexy Cooper Mystery #1) by Christa Charter

message 14: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) I thought I would put it out there that we should probably be nominating books that are easily available in both print and ebook formats. A couple of these suggestions look like they are only available in ebook format.

message 15: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) I would like to suggest Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane.

message 16: by Anna Neal (new)

Anna Neal | 66 comments I've never read either of these books but they have been on my to-read list forever. Both are in Felicia's Vaginal Fantasy goodreads group I believe.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
The Gate to Women's Country

message 17: by Seawood (new)

Seawood Babylon Steel, without a doubt. Sex, gods, and swords. What more could you want?

I agree - it's always frustrating when the book isn't widely available.

@Felicia You may want to consider checking WorldCat to gauge availability. It collects cataloging data from libraries across the world so you can get a good idea of how accessible a book is. GR connects to WorldCat so you can click "book links" and then "libraries" to pull it up (note that it has to be a version of the book with an ISBN number - WorldCat doesn't recognize ASINs or BNIDs). A book like Guilty Pleasures is available in 1,400 libraries while Lunatic Fringe is only available in 2.

I'll be back with some recommendations later. :)

Kirsten Bailey (klbailey) | 86 comments What about this one? Dragon Actually Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin, #1) by G.A. Aiken It has hot guys that shapeshift into dragons (trust me so much better than dinosaurs)

message 20: by Elzibub (last edited Nov 07, 2012 11:35AM) (new)

Elzibub | 119 comments Wasn't sure if you guys have done this one before I joined yet, but I like Succubus Blues, book 1 of the Georgina Kincaid series, by Richelle Mead. Lots of good smut and a male love interest who isn't a macho alpha male; instead, he's a shy, nerdy writer type. Adorable!

As long as the book is available on audio & has some good smut, I'll be happy. The last couple of months have been a little smut-light. I would also prefer that the December books not be holiday themed. Not everyone is crazy about Christmas.

message 23: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea | 47 comments Hmmm trying to think of things with some adequate smut... Ghost Hunter by Jayne Castle? and.... Darkest Surrender by Gena Showalter.

Though I do like Rosemary and Rue, it's smut-lite... hopefully a future pick?

message 24: by Sara (new)

Sara (medusasmirror) | 34 comments I'll second Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch. I also recommend Angelmaker.

Felicia (feliciaday) | 740 comments Mod
I'll pick ones with smut in them for the poll. That's your Christmas present haha.

message 26: by Redrosevertigo0 (new)

Redrosevertigo0 Is there any Christmas themed urban fantasy? With smut? I need some smut in my life...

message 27: by CC (last edited Nov 05, 2012 06:05PM) (new)

CC | 4 comments Two suggestions:
1.Iced by Moning just rocked my world! Follows up on the Fever series.
2.Never thought I'd get the hots for an over-grown lizard, but Dragon Bound did it for me.

message 28: by Anna (new)

Anna | 135 comments I'm surprised Outlander (by Diana Gabaldon) ... hasn't been suggested yet, at least I think it hasn't. The fantastical element is less at the for-front, but there are some themes that have come up before: mature heroine, virgin but totally fantastic and virile scottish male protagonist ... honestly Jamie's one of my all time favorite male love interests ... some time-travel to Jacobite-era Scottish highlands. When there was discussion on the last hangout about the story one would want to appear in, Kaila's description immediately made me think of this book, so if Kaila hasn't read this yet, she should! ...as should everyone else.

message 29: by Heather (new)

Heather Finley (heatherfinley) | 49 comments Divine by Mistake by PC Cast- I've heard it compared to Outlander but it's a much lighter/faster read.

Death's Daughter by Amber Benson- How could you go wrong with Tara from Buffy writing a story that has a talking puppy? Haven't read it yet but I've heard her talk about some dirty scenes in it.

High Stakes by Erin McCarthy- Vampire smut. This series is my guilty pleasure.

Visions of Sugar Plums by Janet Evanovich- I saw someone mention holiday themed and it came to mind. It's a super short, easy read. Same characters as the Stephanie Plum books but set in the supernatural world.

"The Gate to Women's Country" is fantastic, but it's not what I would call romance. More speculative fiction and social commentary than romance. I sobbed at the end of reading it, and the sexy time (cause there's only one even though there is allusion to many trysts) is not good.

message 32: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 46 comments LULZ, my feels are so Merry!

All I Want for Christmas is a Vampire

Undead and Unreturnable

The Bite Before Christmas (There are SEVERAL incarnations on this theme)

Silent Night, Haunted Night

Now, I cannot vouch for the quality of any of these, buuut, they look hilarious and I would like to try for at least one of them.

message 33: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 493 comments Mod
Thirding Outlander. It's one of my faves and I think it will bring up some good discussion.

Seconding The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. This one I haven't read, but I've heard only good things about it!

I'm also going to throw in Siren's Call. I just read it and loved it. The hero is not an alpha, the heroine is a mermaid, and (IMO) the world building and story is awesome.

message 34: by Adelaide (new)

Adelaide Blair Archangel by Sharon Shinn. High on romance (low on smut.) No e-version, but very very good.

message 35: by Lunafox90 (new)

Lunafox90 | 2 comments My recommendation is Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon it works great as a stand alone but if you decide to go and read the dark hunter novels that this connects to then I would highly recommend it. If you read book one of the dark hunter novels Night Pleasures the main character Kyrian of Thrace is mentioned in Fantasy Lover as well as Julian the main character is also in Night PLeasures and it makes it so much better to know the back story to the characters as you meet them. The Dark hunter novels are an intricate interwoven series every book is based on one Dark hunter and the woman who will potentially break his curse of servitude to Artemis the Greek goddess of the moon. However the thing that I love about these books is the back story behind it. If you read the books in order there is an underlining story that drives you forward.

Depending on the book you choose there is at least one sex scene but it's usually about the romance or the danger of the underlying story.

Dark Hunters are portrayed as vampires they were given the skills to hunt down the Damions worse vamps who suck souls rather then blood. Each one has been betrayed or wronged in some way, then they trade their souls to Artemis to exact their revenge, however afterwards they're her loyal dogs. Each has it's own unique personality. My personal favorite out of the series is Night Play, where the character is not a dark hunter but a wolven Were Hunter. :) yeah I can go on about these a while so I'll shush. Even if it's not for the pick I would highly suggest that you check her books out. Sherrilyn Kenyon

Heather Finley (heatherfinley) | 49 comments Just found out there is a new Erin McCarthy book coming out this month called The Fangover.

The Fangover

I feel like that cover has VF written all over it.

message 39: by jillz (new)

jillz (jillzz) Mind Games (The Disillusionists Trilogy, #1) by Carolyn Crane

I've been wanting to read this forever.

Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison
We read the 4th book in this series as an alt alt pick in the djinn month. This series is definitely up our alley & there's plenty of smut to go around.

Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne
While the protagonist isn't a lady, this series is so much fun and there isn't a lack of smut.

message 40: by Chandra (new)

Chandra | 12 comments I would like to recommend Dragon Actually
I have not personally read the book, but I certainly want to after reading its description and looking over the reviews. The female lead seems like an ass-kicking kind of girl and there seems to be bountiful sexytimes. Plus...dragons!!

message 41: by Clayton (last edited Nov 06, 2012 09:28AM) (new)

Clayton Bidding (claytonbidding) I love The Fallen Series by Kristina Douglas. Brooding, blood sucking, Angel action at it's steamiest! The heroines switch per book, so I'm interested in which female lead each of you would relate to the most!
Raziel
Demon
Warrior

message 42: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 2 comments I would like to vote against a holiday themed one too... In my experience they're not of the best quality.

message 43: by Beth (new)

Beth Dead Until Dark (the first Sookie Stackhouse book) - -might be interesting for people who only saw the TV show.

A Marjorie Liu "Dirk and Steele" book -- the first one is Tiger Eye. Smut and really fun roller coaster plot. Everything from evil magicians to cursed shapeshifting 7 foot tigers to secret paranormal detective agencies.
