Kandice I'm sorry to hear you didn't like it. It's weird that some books we seem to really enjoy the same, and others I love and you hate or vice versa!

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments Wow, you are definately making fantastic progress!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It was interesting, but I think that I was just turned off by the overbearing religiousness. I'm not saying that it's WRONG, because I am in no position to judge that, and I know that Lewis is a Christian so naturally that will be the type of religious book he would write, but it just wasn't for me.

I think that the idea that bugged me the most was that the tempters didn't just tempt, they manipulated, which seems to me to be a loss of free will. Maybe that is just a matter of semantics, but in my mind, it's one thing to dangle a carrot in front of someone and tempt them to take it, but it's another to starve them to the point where there doesn't seem to be a choice anymore.

That's kind of how I viewed the book. I know that the "patient" still had his free will, and that Good Christians wouldn't allow themselves to be manipulated, but some of the things that Lewis portrayed as damnable sins were so innocuous that I wouldn't think anyone but Mother Theresa would end up in Heaven. LOL

I much preferred the book as a study of human nature. I don't particularly being told that everything I do is a sin, so this book just rubbed me the wrong way from the start.

Sorry for rambling on, I'm trying to explain what exactly it was that I didn't care for, but I don't think I'm doing a good job!

message 104: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I know what you mean, and I am a Christian, but I didn't take anything in the book to heart. I just loved the way everything was so twisted and, like you said, manipulated. I laughed out loud quite a few times, mostly because some people I know are almost ridiculously religious and "Holier than thou" so I had them in mind while reading.

message 105: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah.. I laughed at Screwtape's description of the "patient's" girlfriend. That was pretty funny. She seemed like the "Holier than thou" type you mentioned, haha!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Awww... I'm sorry! I will come help if you want! but then I don't know how I would get the experience and feeling of the books I read into your head...

message 111: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker That is so exciting! I'm so proud of you!

message 112: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Thanks Lori... I'm pretty excited too. Although right now I'm not reading anything from the list. I'm reading Hunger Games, which Kandice sent to me as a trade, so it's not counting toward my list. (But it IS really good!)

message 113: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I agree, Fiona, although then you'd have to worry about getting someone else's interpretation of the book along with the book itself. I wouldn't want that.

So, we'd need a Book Telepathy Reader Interpretation Filter. Then we'd be good!

message 114: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes... If only I had a garage in my apartment. Everyone knows that these kinds of things must be invented in a garage. *sigh*

;)

message 115: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Becky, did you enjoy Rebecca?

message 116: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Aww I am jealous... I have been trying to get Hunger Games either through the library or paperbackswap forever. I really want to read it, but don't want to break down and buy it... Sigh! I am glad you like it though.

message 117: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Vicki, I'll be more than happy to pass it along to you when I'm done. It's an Advance Reader's Copy, so there are some unfinished details (mainly typos, lol) but it is really good and quick. I finished 1/2 of it last night.

Message me with your address and I'll mail it out when I'm done! :)

I loved the first chapter most especially. I have no idea why.
The first line of the entire book is beautiful as well

message 120: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yeah, the first chapter really sets the tone. I agree 100%!

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Do you know how many pages you have read total?

message 129: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) her message says 14,128...I think that is total.

message 130: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) btw...you're kicking some book @$$ Becky :)

message 131: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Thanks Allison! Not as good as you are doing, Miss Speed-reader, but good enough. If I could just pry myself away from GR once in a while!

Kathryn, Do you mean how many pages have I read total in my life? No way! I wouldn't even want to try. I read so many books as a kid that trying to count would be impossible. I mean, Nancy Drew books, Hardy Boys, Boxcar Children, Babysitter's Club, Little House books... And those are just a few that I remember off the top of my head! I don't even have those on my GR because I'm not sure which ones of the series I read!

That page count is only since January 1st.

message 132: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That's true. IT wasn't very kind to you, was it? I have faith in you though Fi!

Kandice *beams beautifically*

Is that a word? Whateve, you know what I mean.

message 134: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I did pick up Shogun at B&N. I hefted it and adored it's weight, sniffed it, fondled it - yes, fondled it... And then put it back. *sigh*

message 135: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Willpower. A lot of willpower.

...... I don't wanna talk about it! *sniffle*

message 136: by Kandice (new)

Kandice OMG you poor baby! I could never do that, and I own 2 paperbacks and am on the "Holy Grail" search for a used, but good condition hardback. I'll probably never, ever find one...
*Eeyore sigh*

message 137: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It was tough, but I've been skipping all of your discussions about it in the threads, so that helped. If I hadn't, it probably would have been impossible to pass up.

I'll keep an eye out for a good condition HC copy. If I find one, I'll pick it up for you and I'll trade you for a PB!

message 138: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Sorry, my mistake, I was expecting the page total at the bottom, and didn't see that it was above the books with their totals! Wow, impressive!!!

message 139: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) No problem Kathryn! I'm a little bit backward when it comes to logical placement of things.

One need only ask my boyfriend for evidence! Today he asked where a particular pair of his pants could be found, and I said "On the kitchen table." As if that's the most natural place in the world to find a pair of men's jeans. :\

message 140: by Kandice (new)

Kandice You sound like Dom's girlfriend in this lovely tome you sent me! I'll send you paperback anyway;) If you really want one. I was wondering what to send you...

If you want to send Shogun to me, I won't argue! It sounds great...

message 144: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Kandice!! I'll have to start scoping out the thrift stores to help you on your search for a good condition hard back.

Becky!!!! I ADORED the Boxcar Children when I was a kid, no one I know has ever heard of them :(
