Moving Mountains (Mt. TBR)
Okay, I must be crazy but I felt like creating a challenge and I wrote this in the last 30 minutes. It's a little bit similar to Snake & Ladders to it wasn't that hard to adapt. I'm not sure if anyone is interested but this will be here for as long as anyone is interested to play.
This game is open to start / finish anytime and you can even restart again when you've rolled past your 'to-read' shelf but let me just state that this is a very relax game (ie. I won't be keeping an eye on it much, it's just a fun game to "move mountains").
ps: do you like the name? LOL
I know you have questions, "Shoot!"
pps: YES, you can overlap Bday Games with this one!

You just crack me up, Tien. You must have too much time on your hands. I love this as I have a HUGE TBR. I will be reading off of my "to read mine" list. People who know me well tell me I should rename this list as my "Orphaned books" list as once I buy a book almost never get read. I am always busy reading library and borrowed books. That said, I think I understand this whole thing, EXCEPT the bonus task. So here are my questions.
1. If I understand correctly, I get to define my own Magic Number and Bonus Task. Right?
2. Since we are rolling two dice, can the Magic Number be anything between 1 and 12?
3. When I roll my Magic Number, do I always do the Bonus Task, or do I get to choose to read the book at that position or the Bonus Task?
4. Did you REALLY come up with this in 30 minutes???? As always, I am impressed. I should introduce you to my friend Scoozer. She does the challenges in my other group, and you two are definitely both very creative and very driven. :)

One complication I see: For anyone participating in LOST at the same time, the numbers on our lists will be changing whenever one of those is read. In that case, do we stick with the numbers in spite of the fact that books have shifted? Or do we count the next turn from the number the book we read had moved to before we changed it to "read"? Am I making that question clear?
Actually, I guess any book we're reading for any other challenge has the possibility of creating this effect.

Interesting. I've just discovered that ordering the list by "position" and ordering it by "date added" give different results. At first glance, that seemed wrong. I want to take part in everything but work for the past few months has been really stressful and very busy. I come home exhausted, which has impacted my reading. I have 280 books on my TBR (they are all books I currently have in my possession.) I'll roll until around book 250 so my positions will be all set. I can pick any book that it's currently in the position I rolled to but if I decide to start with book in position 117, then that means that once I read that book, all the remaining books after that will have to change. Meaning, that I will have new books for positions 122, 137, etc. (This is not a big deal for me to change...I love picking new books, LOL!)

Yes, I know what you mean. But as I explained above, I'm leaving my positions fixed, meaning that once I read #209, Last Summer will NOT be 215. I'll be going strictly by the positions determined by the rolls.
Also you are assuming that I won't be reading from the TBR for other challenges. If I read book #112 for something else, the rest of the books WILL have to change regardless. It's what it would happen if I were rolling one at a time.
What I like about this challenge is that it makes me pick books that I've put in my TBR a while back. Lately I'm finding that I'm just reading what I put there the latest instead of picking up old stuff. This will help me read some of those and mix it up. :)

Hi Carrie, yes, it's in the ruling post that if you landed on a book in the middle of a series, you may replace with another book in that series (that is, if it landed on book 3 but you’ve yet to read book 2, then you can read book 2 instead).
This does mean that you'd actually skip this book as for your next roll, you'd have to count from that book / position.

How to Play:
1. Order your GR TBR by Position* (ascending).
*As you add books onto your TBR, GR would usually place that book on the last numerical position on your TBR and this will not change unless you manually alter the position number yourself. Therefore, to play this game, you can’t really mess with the position numbers.
2. Roll 2 die and add the numbers up
3. Read the book positioned in the number you have just rolled
For example, if I rolled 3+5 = 8 then I’d read the book in #8 on my TBR.
4. After you’ve read the book, it’ll move from ‘to-read’ to ‘read’ and #8 on your ‘to-read’ will be taken by former #9 so for your next book you’d have to count from #8…
For example, if I rolled 4+3 = 7, I would count from the current #8 book (ie. #8 is 1, #9 is 2 etc…) and read book now in #14.
So, it’s very important to remember / record the last position you read from
Additional Rules / Clarifications
*If you don’t keep a ‘to-read’ shelf on GR, feel free to create a ‘to-read’ list yourself, if you’d like to join in. You would have to number the books accordingly.
*Feel Free to PLAN ahead but remember to count differently from above rules because if your book is still in the 'to-read' shelf, your position will not have shifted so if you read from #8 and rolled a 7, your next book will have to come from #15. Be Careful to be as consistent as you can as this may be slightly confusing
*If the book you have to read isn’t available at all, you’re free to replace it with a book of either similar length or date published… Make your own judgement
Example 1: if it was a 536 pages book, you can replace it with a 525 pages book (NOT a 350 pages book)
Example 2: if it was published in December 1999, you can replace it with one published in the same year.
*If you really can't stand the book you are reading now, apply above rule of replacement (similar length / date pub).
*If the book is in the middle of a series, you may replace with another book in that series (that is, if it landed on book 3 but you’ve yet to read book 2, then you can read book 2 instead). This will still change the numbering in position so you’d need to record your position
*If you rolled a double (ie. 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5, 6/6), roll again and add all 4 numbers to get to your next book from your last read.
*Choose your Magic Number & Bonus Task – if you roll your Magic Number, then apply your Bonus for that position. After your Bonus Task, roll your die and count from this position (despite book not being read). As this is purely a Bonus, you are free to choose either read the book in the position you've rolled or from your task
Example:
Magic Number: 7
Bonus Task: A Red Book (can be cover, word in title, etc)
Last Position: #145
Rolled: 7
Current Position: #151 –replaced with Bonus Task
Last Position: #151
Rolled: 5
Note: Adding new books to your TBR will not affect the game as long as you don't manually change the position numbering. In fact, it probably means that you'll be in the game longer and you might even read the latest book you've added on in addition to your older ones ;)
