I'm currently reading The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, Battle Royale by Koushun Takami, and Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness. I'm close to catching up with my other reading and hopefully will join with a S&L pick too.

My other reading this month includes "Turning the Mind into an Ally" by Sakyong Mipham and "Shambhala the Sacred Path of the Warrior."
Finished Steven Erikson's The Forge of Darkness. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
And next it's Dan Simmon's The Terror
Working my way through Leviathan Wakes and really enjoying it. After that will probably be either Calibans War or Great North Road. Trying to add to my laser reading as up until now I've mostly been a sword person.
Just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower and wrapping up Room- both insightful, complex and beautifully written books. I'm also really excited to see Emma Watson in the movie!
I just started Feed by Mira Grant. I'd seen her at a con last year, but had sort of forgotten that I wanted to try her books until I watched the Seanan McGuire interview from the podcast. I'm also re-reading a YA called The Far West, which is Harry Potter meets Little House on the Prairie, more or less.
I've read 100 pages of Iain Banks's The Hydrogen Sonata. I'm not sure about it yet. It seems like work.
Since it's October, I'm going to clean my Nook of a few of the monster stories that have been collecting in my backlog. Up first: San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats.
Trying to listen to The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King. Not sure i'll finish it. Enjoyed it when it first came out, but now I have a hard time staying interested. King has always been hit or miss for me.Update:
Story gets better once you get past the 1st quarter or so, narrative matures once he stops talking about 'good boys' and 'bad boys'. Beginning has a very childish feel to it.
I finished Zothique and am moving on to the next-published book in the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series: The Shaving Of Shagpat by George Meredith. If I remember correctly, this one is going to be kind of a slog.
Still working my way through The Forbidden Apple: A Century of Sex & Sin in New York City, which is ridiculously dog-eared now and annotated as I end up visiting mentioned locations as I am reading. Fascinating, though, and a great look at how moralism, decadence, racism, sexism, and homophobia can shape a city both spiritually and physically. Also reading White Night. I am worried about catching up with Jim Butcher. Since beginning the series last year, I've never had to worry about waiting for the next book. But when I hit the most current one -- well, at least he isn't George RR Martin with his schedule.
So, first trimester exhaustation/fatigue has really cramped my evening reading the last two months (yay, I'm pregnant! but boo, I can't seem to finish a chapter in a book without falling asleep)... I am starting to feel more like myself though, so I am excited to get back to reading some great books this month: Currently reading: Embassytown & The Many Lives of Lilith Lane
Current audiobook: Red Seas Under Red Skies
Hoping to also read this month:
A Discovery of Witches
Cloud Atlas
The Twelve
It is an eclectic list, but two of the books are library ebooks I've been waiting on for awhile (A Discovery of Witches
and Embassytown).
Is anybody else trying any of the Kindle serials? I'm not really impressed with the one I'm reading (The Many Lives of Lilith Lane) but I figure I'll finish it since I've already put the money down.
Truthfully, I am not certain I am going to be able to concentrate on anything else when The Twelve comes out, so it may bump everything else out of the way come Oct 16. :)
I'm reading Isles of the Forsaken. It's typical of our recent swords. Islands. Boats. Innovative magic. Bit it seems to be an allegory for the British Empire. Enjoying it so far.
I'm failing miserably at reading while recovering from back surgery. I imagine it's something like reading while in the first trimester of pregnancy. When I'm awake enough, I'm trying to finish listening to God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales, but it keeps knocking me out. And I'm reading but making slow progress on The Way of Kings on Kindle.
William wrote: "I'm finishing Ready Player One and then I'm not too sure.I need to finish The Shadow Rising which is the most likely choice.
Also on my radar are American Gods, The Ghost King and Slaughterhouse..."
Slaughterhouse Five is one of my all time favorite books, don't miss it!
Now listening to John Rocket Vol. 1 by Kevin Joel Conner. Sounds like an interesting superhero story.
Im still on the Robin Hobb trip from a couple of months ago, im reading The Mad Ship at the moment, will probably take a break to read Dirty Streets Of Heaven and then I'l be back to reading more in that series.
Tamahome wrote: "I've read 100 pages of Iain Banks's The Hydrogen Sonata. I'm not sure about it yet. It seems like work."That seems typical of a lot of Bank's books. Lot's of complex setup for the first quarter or so.
@Lucy, me too. I'm about a third of the way through Assassin's Quest now and WOW the first few chapters of that book (and the last few of Royal Assassin) were a total gut punch. In a good way.
Ye excellent loved the trilogy, incredible writing, cant wait to read the tawny man.
For the spooky month of October, I went for a dark horror fantasy from a new author, Jon Creffield, who is not only self publishing the book, but is alo giving some of the proceeds to the Garry Gygax (Father of D&D) Memorial Fund.. This is his debut novel its grim and dark and fantastical and has some very interesting characters, well worth a read Hell's Door Opens

Finished up Fallen Dragon and Last Argument of Kings. This was my first time to read Peter F. Hamilton and Joe Abercrombie, definitely reading more of their work!On the second story of Cloud Atlas with the club. It's a different pace than I am accustomed to, but I enjoy the time that have to sit down with it.
On Audible I kicked off Daemon today at work. I don't know if I was just in a bad mood, but the narrator was ruining the story for me. I was having a hard time taking it seriously because the voices sounded like the most cliche 'bad cop' story ever. Going to give it more time though, I've heard tons of great things about it.
Finished John Rocket Vol. 1, not bad superhero story, a bit light on the superhero action and deals mostly with life when not behind the mask. Had problems with the narrator, especially his female voices. They sounded more like 80yr old men than teenage girls. A falsetto can be a terrible thing. 8-DNow listening to The Outstretched Shadow by Mercedes Lackey.
@Sean Sean wrote: "I'm in-between books. I have a ton I want to read, but not sure about the order. I will list some here, and if ya'll can help I'd appreciate it.
Witch and Wizard
Homeland By RA Salvatore
The girl ..."
I would go for Homeland, just because I want to start reading them too lol, although Girl With A Dragon Tattoo is good as well.

I think I'm going to do homeland first, and if you havent read it in the next month or so just contact me and I'll give impressions.... Because my opinion is gold hahaha. If it's good, then I know I have like 30 some books in the same universe to go through.

ok deal pm me to give me the thumbs up and i'l join you in a 30 book marathon lol.
Didn't notice San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats was a novella. So two days and done, and moving on to Team Human
I'm just finishing up The Lies of Locke Lamora, not sure if the sequel is worth reading or not? I've heard some negative things, but I enjoyed this book pretty well.I have some very diverse reading interests, so my other books for this month are actually dog training books! I'm reading several books covering different ways to use clicker training. Can't recommend the method enough.
Oh, and my boyfriend's forcing me to read Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop. He devoured the Black Jewels trilogy in a week and is expecting me to do the same.
Alterjess wrote: "@Lucy, me too. I'm about a third of the way through Assassin's Quest now and WOW the first few chapters of that book (and the last few of Royal Assassin) were a total gut punch. In a good way."I totally agree!(At least about Royal Assassin, Assassin's Quest is next on the list) My first Hobb was AA for the monthly read, and I liked it, but it didn't knock me over.
I really loved RA, the intertwining of relationships between all the characters was fantastic. Character development was much stronger. I know, I know, it's a trilogy so don't expect everything to be fleshed out in the first book, but I was teetering on the edge of not continuing the trilogy after AA. It wasn't bad, but my to-read list is so long, I feel I have to drop books that are marginal. So glad I didn't drop this series.
I just finished listening to Cloud Atlas and am lightening it up a bit(a lot) now with Flip This Zombie.I'm still reading The Black Prism on my Nook. I'm enjoying it so much that I'm not reading anything else in text.
My next book will be The Rapture of the Nerds: A tale of the singularity, posthumanity, and awkward social situations. I went to a book signing by Cory Doctorow with my son. I got this and he got Pirate Cinema. My son loved Little Brother and For The Win. From Doctorow's talk, I can see I'll be seeing a lot of thumb drives in the house.

Red Seas Under Red Skies is just as good as Lies, I think. Though it does slog a bit at the beginning.

I agree that red sails is harder at the beginning because a lot of my favorite characters were not there. But in the end I loved it.
I just finished The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch last week. I'm reading World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks at the moment, didn't pick it because it's the Halloween month. Really enjoying it so far. Right now loving survival after apocalypse kind of books. Also listening to Zero Day by David Baldacci on my mp3 player. Anyone got any suggestions on post-apocalyptic survival books?
I greatly enjoyed WWZ.Right now I'm reading Goldfinger and Something Wicked This Way Comes. I'll also read The Strain The Strain Trilogy 1 later.
The other night I read How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You. Yeah, it's been that kind of a few weeks for me. My brain just can't engage much. I finished God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales which had some interesting parts and some not-so-interesting parts. I also listened to Legion, which was entertaining but the part that had me most intrigued was the "magic" system (typical for Sanderson, he has great and rather unique magic systems). The goal for today is to listen to a one-man show of Macbeth and then start either Blackbirds or Energized. I'm more interested in Blackbirds but I'm not sure I'll have the mental capacity for it. Both of those are in audio form. In print, I'm still reading (and loving) The Way of Kings.
Tom wrote: "I agree that red sails is harder at the beginning because a lot of my favorite characters were not there. But in the end I loved it."Have to agree with Tom - takes a bit more time to get going than Lies, as you get used to the new situation, but loved it by the end (and have been gagging for the next Gentleman Bastards book since)
Finsihed Kill Decision by Daniel Suarez. I liked Daemon and Freedom a lot better. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Finally picking up Neuromancer as my lunch time read. Haven't had a lot of luck with some of the older scifi as far as enjoyment goes. Hopefully this one will hit the spot.

I liked it, but I read it before the Matrix, when the Internet wasn't prevalent. I've had friends who read it for the first time recently, and didn't like it.
I do like Snow Crash better though.
I've also had Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive sitting unread on my shelves for months.

Just finished The Shaving Of Shagpat and am about to start The Island of the Mighty by Evangeline Walton.
Right now i am finishing up Starcraft II: Heaven's Devils and i am thinking about picking Geekomancy back up after.
I just finished reading The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi and I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was kinda sad it was all over. I'm not sure if the author has written anymore books since but if he did, I'll definitely look into it.
I'm currently reading the dead tree version of Fuzzy Nation and The Angel's Kiss: A Melody Malone Mystery on my Kindle.
Finished listening to The Outstretched Shadow by Mercedes Lackey. Now on to book 2 To Light A Candle.
Finishing all the foundation books, then I might do the robot series from Asimov. Also just finished The Way of Kings from Brandon Sanderson.
Finished Team Human. Moving on to Ex-Patriots. I'm hoping it's as good as the first one in the series was.
David(LA,CA) wrote: "Moving on to Ex-Patriots. I'm hoping it's as good as the first one in the series was."I enjoyed it. Waiting impatiently for the next book in the series. 8-D
Finished Dan Simmons' The Terror. My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Tentatively starting Carrion Comfort also by Simmons
Reading Cherie Priest's Boneshaker. Still working on my other two, but Heart of Darkness is dense prose, and can only absorb so much of Here's Looking at Euclid: A Surprising Excursion Through the Astonishing World of Math at any one time.
