R6: Team #13 ~ Lucky 13

I'm going to go with Unearthly. Gonna try and use books I've got on hand for awhile :)

Shelf = Vampires
Book Read = Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors by Molly Harper
Date Finished = 10/21/12
Rating = ★★★★
Basic Review
It has beeen a long time since I read the first three books in this series, so I almost wish I had taken the time to do a re-read before attemting this one.
I enjoyed Molly Harper's humor, as usual. I especially love the little how-to book blurbs at the start of every chapter.
I. Having trouble typing on my tablet this mornong, so I apologize about the brevity of this review...

Book: lover reborn by J.R Ward
Finished: 22/10/12
Shelf: vampires
Stars: 4 & half
Review:
As much as I had to pick this one up straight away when it came home with me it took a little to start to grab me, hence dropping half a star. I also was wanting more of the other brothers to make an appearance. This was very centred on tohr and John. That being said Quinn and wrath had to make appearances also. It was an interesting way to delve into the past of tohr but we never really saw much of no'one's past which I would have thought was essential, I mean, sure it mentions it a little but doesn't get in depth which disappointed me. Interesting how the mated pair John and xhex ended up too.
However it was a true path of self discovery that these characters went on and it was a thrill a minute as always with the brothers.

Read: The Ripple Effect
Finished: Oct 17
Rating: 2 stars
Some spoilers in review. ETA: this ended up a bit of a rant.
It took me a while to decide how I wanted to rate this. Though I finished the book and enjoyed the last half, the first half had me more than a little angry at what happened. To sum it up, Rhiannon was basically mind-raped by her Disco at the end of book 2 and decides she needs out of that situation. Good for her.
My issues in book 3:
1. Her supposed friend is trying to convince her that she is over-reacting by avoiding the guy and needs to let it go and get back together with him because he is really upset over it. And it was her fault for making him angry. And he's not the only one who feels that way.
2. She eventually forgives the guy, and they reunite with some make-up sex. As they're about to get down, she gets flashbacks of her abusive foster father and has second thoughts. Disco ignores her hesitance and she gets over it in a second. Really? Our hero is a guy that reminds our heroine of an abusive jerkwad from her past?
I guess as part of the vicious vampire world, the point is that humans like Rhiannon are worthless. To me, Rhiannon getting back with Disco is the same as saying she's accepted that belief and it's okay for a guy to be abusive because ultimately, it's true love. Rhiannon is a character who has been hurt and does not trust easily. She's supposed to be tough and independent, and it seems she forgives a couple betrayals too easily.
If I ignore that detail, the book is an engaging read and I did enjoy the second half of this. Rhiannon is a fun to read about (choice of men notwithstanding) and not afraid to seek out revenge and get her hands dirty. I wish the Disco situation had resolved itself differently and it would be a much higher rated book.
Haven't decided whether or not I would continue the series.

The Turning by Jennifer Armintrout
Shelf: Vampires
Date finished: 10/10/12
Rating: 3 stars
Review: I very much enjoyed reading The Turning although Carrie who was attacked in the morgue where she worked and turned into a vampire I have mixed feelings for...On the one hand I can appreciate her horror at what has happened to her but then she starts using that as an excuse for anything that goes wrong in her life...if she breaks a nail it was only because she was attacked and ect....
I also am having a hard time determining who I would like the said Carrie to wind up being with; her sire Cyrus or her so called savior Nathan... I know I should obviously want her to be with Nathan since he is all "lets kill all the vampires" but I love a good bad boy and Cyrus is all that and more let me tell you!

The Prophet by Amanda Stevens
Shelf: Series Catch-up
Date finished: 10/15/12
Rating: 5 stars
Review: This is book three and this series has become one of my most favorite series! I love Amanda's writing style and okay so I am a bit excited because the series is set in South Carolina where I am from but oh my gosh it's hard to eat sleep or anything else until I am done reading a book from this series and The Prophet was no different than the first two! They have the creep factor I love with just enough suspense to keep you wondering and enough plot to hold onto your attention!
The Prophet is not quite as "spooky" as the first two books. It mainly takes us back to characters from The Restorer and ties up some things I'm not going to go into but oh my gawd if you have not started this series GO GET THEM!!! Spooky graveyards, unsolved murders, fresh graves, ghosty hauntings, and more! I will add though that one thing that did give me the heebie jeebies in the Prophet was when Amelia found a traced heart on her bathroom mirror which was a way a particular ghost/spirit would communicate with her sometimes but what was so creepy about it is that spirits were not supposed to be able to enter her home!

Good Job!! :D

Finished my Demons book.
Unearthly
Finished: Oct. 23
Rating: 4 stars
I really enjoyed this book. I think I was on vampire overload and needed a little change.
In the last couple years, there have been a slew of angel YA books with pretty covers. I had heard this one was different than the rest, but still hesitant to read it. Thanks to Bingo, I finally got around to it and Unearthly is a GREAT book.
The entire story felt so mysterious to me, which was both good and bad. Clara recently learned that she is part-angel and has a "purpose" to fulfill, though she doesn't know what it is. She (and the reader) isn't given much more info than that initially and is full of questions. I thought the unveiling of information was a tad on the slow side but really interesting. It was good in that I was riveted and couldn't wait to learn more about the angel-bloods, and bad because I was irked by being kept in the dark.
I haven't read a YA book in a while and had a lot of fun with Clara and her friends. There is the teenage angst, boy drama, desire to fit in and all that, but done in a realistic, not over-the-top way. There is a bit of a love triangle too, but in my memory, the most successful one I've seen in YA books. I believe a huge part of that is the relationships are given time to build slowly.
If I was sixteen, Tucker would totally be my new crush.

I'm anxiously waiting for the next shelf. Got the sequel to Unearthly and hoping it will fit on the shelf. Currently reading The Paris Wife to get away from the paranormal stuff for a bit. So far so good even though completely not my normal type of reading. Kind of wish I remembered some of the Hemingways I read for school though.

I've been stuck at home with a back injury this last week :( it wasn't til today I felt much like reading which will tell you how I've been feeling....
Here's a review of my latest shelf book:
Succubus revealed by richelle mead
Finished: 27/10/12
Shelf: demons
Stars: 4
Review:
I've anticipated this for a long time as georgia Kincaid is one of my favourite characters and she didn't disappoint! Seth and Georgia are together again but hell's not going to let that last. The transfers been put in and our succubus is moving to las vegas. However there's more to this story - why is she being transferred? She's stepped on some toes and ends up in a fight for her soul....

Darkness Unbound by Keri Arthur
Shelf: Demons
Date finished: 10/24/12
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:
This is the first of the Dark Angels series, which is set in Riley Jensen's world (and very happy to see Riley and the guys again!)
Little Risa is all grown up, and I like how she turned out. Her usual life, which is not so exciting, and has the usual ups and downs, suddenly takes a surprise twist when everyone seems interested in tracking down her father through her. This is a father she has never met, never even really expected to meet, so the whole situation is a bit problematic. Not to mention this was preceded by her discovery that a brutal, soul-devouring monster is on the loose. Many different factions are at work, and she has some tough decisions and more to deal with.
Risa herself is an interesting character. She has similarities with her Mom and Riley~no surprise as they are big factors in her life~but is not like a copy-character of them. The supporting cast of characters around her are quite intriguing as well.
Definitely reading more of this series, soon.

*ducking head* I've had a great, albeit VERY busy, week....hoping the greatness spreads in your directions immediately!
Looking forward to shelf day!

Sounds like Sandra had a good idea with the group hug! Hope this next week looks up for everyone. Hope your back feels better soon Belinda. At least you're reading again!
I have yet to read a Riley Jensen book. Is the series still going or is it finished? I've been thinking I need a new shifter series to start, would you guys recommend it?
Yay for Georgina Kincaid! Those were fun books. I had heard so many bad things about Georgina, but really enjoyed the series :)
Oh, and Judithe, glad you had a good week.

Shelf: Series Catch-Up
Book: Insurgent by Veronica Roth
Completed: 10/23/2012
Rating: *****
Review: I really enjoyed this book more than the first one. I was sucked into the story and spent many a late night thinking to myself "One more chapter, then lights out!" The ending was kind of predictable but I look forward to the next one!

I haven't started keri Arthur's new series yet and I'm spewing I'll miss a met and greet in a Melbourne bookshop later next month too!!! It's great reading her books and picking out the local (ish - for me - Melbourne's about an hour away) spots.
Loving the team hug ((((((13)))))) thanks guys!! I needed that :D
Oh, well, now to settle in and wait for the new shelf.....

Our new shelf was posted - Favorite Series. I picked a new series to me: Matched by Ally Condie.
We'll see how it goes!

Going to read Hallowed for favorite-series shelf.

I'm so give out today and aint done a thing! Guess it the change in weather? Anyhow I am all over that group hug!
Ya'll have a wonderful Sunday and I'll catch ya on the flipside!

Going to read Hallowed for favorite-series shelf."
Bit hard for me to judge as I've only read the first 2 Rileys, but it was recommended to me that I read them prior to the spin off, which I also have ready as well.

OK. I still haven't picked my book (finishing up another one, and found so many good ones I have ready to pick up that I'm still agonizing over my choice!), but will soon.
On the other hand, I had a lovely time at the movies (went to The Hunger Games with son, and it was followed by a rather interesting discussion as we've both read the books, but I have a Western Civ. education, and he doesn't....) Now, I'm thinking I need to do a re-read of that trilogy... But, Bingo book first!
Hope it's a great week and nobody gets side-walloped by anymore personal or natural disasters this week!

Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning
Shelf: Demons
Date finished: 10/15/12
Rating: 3 stars
Review:While not as fascinating as her Highlander Books I still enjoyed reading Darkfever and think the next book will be even better because the ground work has been lain and Mac should begin to evolve and get over her girlie girlie ways since she now understands there are things that go bump in the night and monsters do exist and they will kill you if given the opportunity.
Barrons didn't appeal to me at all for the biggest part of the book. I actually fingered him to be an ass and full of himself but towards the end I began to realize this was just what Mac needed him to be because she was so soft and feminine and surely going to get herself killed before she ever realized what was going on. In short she was naive and child-like. He had to harden her up.
Still bit confused on the bookstore clerk, Fiona. Is she one of Barrons lovers or just a dear friend? At some points she acted sort of jealous towards Mac and then in the next instance she was worried over her safety?

Good Job!! :D

I'll keep all you East Coasters in my thoughts the next couple days. Hope Sandy passes without causing too much trouble.

The Guardian by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Shelf: Favorite Series
Date finished: 10/20/12
Rating: ★★★ 1/2
Thoughts:
Well, I did like this book, but...
First, it really annoys me to pick up what looks like a nice, long book...and see the page count has been bumped up due to a rather large type-font (or whatever that is). I've noticed this in a couple of Kenyon books (particularly the Dream-Hunter ones), and it just puts me off. The other thing was a lack of "punch". While the characters were new, and a "new" pantheon made an appearance, it had a little of the "been-there, read-that" feel.
Dream-Hunter Lydia goes to hell on a rescue mission and is captured by the Guardian, Seth. Her natural empathy (or is it Stockholm Syndrome) quickly lead to deepening feelings, more than lust, of course. Seth, who has basically got the embittered, chip-on-my-shoulder, not-gonna-give-a-d*mn-about-anyone-but-numero-uno thing down pat, also falls in love. It's nice, but not deep. Often, it feels a little too quick/character development is a little thin. Still reeling over the jackal bit near the end.
There are some really great books in this series, and ones I love to re-read. This is a decent one, but unfortunately not as good as it could be. I'll keep reading, but not as anxious to get my hands on the next one. I hope the next one brings back more of the "LOVE IT" feeling for me, but not holding my breath to find out. But, still gets 1/2 a star extra just cause I want to love it more...even if that isn't really happening.

Shelf = Demon Shelf
Book Read = The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox
Date Finished = 10/30/12
Rating = ★★
Basic Review
I was definitely disappointed by this book. I think I was hoping that it would be funny, but I didn't find humor in the grandma-motorcycle schtick. I also was annoyed by character names like Ant-Eater and Pirate. I found the plot to really drag and didn't enjoy it. It was merely okay for me. Not going to continue the series.

I finished Hallowed and it was awesomesauce. Will be back tomorrow with a review.

On a side note --
DH and I put out a bowl of candy for Halloween, and of all the things - someone stole the bowl we put the candy in! Crazy! Bowl's probably only worth $1, but still. Strange ;)

Shelf = Favorite-Series Shelf
Book Read = Matched by Ally Condie
Date Finished = 10/31/12
Rating = ★
Basic Review
Sorry... I typically love dystopia (even young-adult dystopia), but this one didn't do anything for me. I found it boring and too juvenile for my tastes. I think it went to 1 star instead of 2 stars for me because I *hated* the audiobook. That's probably my own fault, but the 1 star goodreads equates to 'didn't like it', and therefore 1 star it gets from me. Bleh.
If any of you liked it, I apologize for my low rating.
Not my cup-o-tea.
