Just finished . I loved it! Well done mystery, interesting, realistic characters, and well written. Background information on code breaking history and botany was well researched and really added to the interest. I will definitely read more by this author.

I think I got to the 9th or 10th book in that series before I abandoned ship. For some reason for me at least the books seemed to become repetative after a while I felt like this too with his Alex Cross series. For me was my favorite in that series. James Patterson's chaptering style can make the book seem choppy. Though they are nice reads with thrill.

I loved Nightingale Vale. It had the sense of an old fashioned ghost story. There were I admit some formatting issues but a great story teller. Stayed up late to finish it.

From the Corner of his Eye by Dean Koontz

One of my favorite authors and rarely am I disappointed. About 1/4 way through and loving it.

Finished- Read from February 03 to 18, 2013

Wow, this book kept me interested for some 750+ pages! Many absorbing main characters and even the secondary characters interesting and real. Most of the book involves a terribly arrogant, paranoid serial rapist/murderer. His delusions and more than that-his pure evil drive him towards what I think he sees as his survival. That survival, in his mind involves the death of someone named Bartholomew, who turns out to be a child. Dean Koontz must have really thought that this was the ultimate evil character (I Agree) --I say that because it seems everyone else in the book is ultimate good--It was going to take a lot of goodness to bring this guy down! This book has many interesting themes and I enjoyed them all. He ends with bringing things together using Quantum physics, molecular biology, quantum mechanics, Spirituality and a good dose of the Bible. The name Bartholomew is no coincidence in the story. Loved this book.

Currently reading Beat the Reaper. The main character is Dr. Pietre Brnwa (Peter Brown) and they also sort of indicate he is the author. I hope that is a publicity stunt! At any rae, it is a bizarre combination of hospital internship and the story of a mob hitman. It is well written and as nurse, I find the hospital scenes hilarious! i.e. the interns way of saying goodbye is to say go home and get some sleep! Even when you kmow they can't or won't be going anywhere.

A Casual Vacancy by JK Rowlings

was interested in whether this author could write more than Harry Potter. Read over 70% the book and am just quite bored with it. Something should be happening by now! Instead Rowling is still introducing new characters. I have a feeling that the book will get better but I have thought that from page 1 so I am putting it on my "To finish later" shelf. BTW A Casual Vacancy is when someone on a town council dies and leaves a vacancy. If you like books about small towns and a tiny bit of politics with many, many pretty average characters -then this may be a good one for you.
To be fair, I also became bored with the Harry Potter stories after second or maybe 3rd book so perhaps this author is just not for me.

I grew really bored with the dysfunctional citizens in The Casual Vacancy, too. I put it on a shelf called Drivel. I am a real Harry Potter fan, though. I have read them all more than once. Maybe I am just a kid at heart.

Me too, Kathy! I haven't plucked up the courage to try The Casual vacancy yet - so many people have found it disappointing.

Perhaps it because she is such a good writer that when she writes about this town of unhappy people, you really feel it. I had to put it down in the early stages.

It must be very hard to find something new after such a huge success as Harry Potter. Whatever she did was almost bound to be a disappointment. Maybe by her next book we'll be comparing to The Casual Vacancy rather than HP and that might be easier for her. I kind of hopes she goes back to children's or YA fiction, though not necessarily back to the world of wizards.

I think she has the opportunity to display her talents in different genres. This is really different from YA fantasy but that's not to say its not very well written. It was. But depressing. I didn't care who would fill that Vacancy. The mysteries that we read always work toward problem resolution and reach a conclusion, usually satisfactory. The story pulls you along. Not so, in Rowling's latest IMO.

I also am greta fan of the Potter books and only made it through 50 pages of this one--snore!!! I couldn't find anyone I liked enough to care about.

im reading The Uncoupling by Meg Wolitzer, its something i put on my list a long time ago and im finally getting to it. only one chapter in, we'll see i am not feeling the strong draw to keep reading but i will keep going. also started Five Red Herrings by Dorothy Sayers today. So far so good but reading the conversations are a bit of an adjustment since they are in dialect.

Yesterday, those of us watching the posting and responding to questions by Jacqueline Winespear experienced a real treat. She wrote the Masie Dobbs series. As a result I am going to read some of the WWI era history books that she mentioned. But currently I am working on Legacy of the Dead by Charles Todd. I enjoy Ian Rutledge.
