My rating system, refined in 2014:
1 star = no! Likely a DNF. One star because the author sat down and typed.
2 stars = maybe. Good premise, but poorly handled. Lots of typos and grammatical errors (though I admit to being a grammar freak). I'm probably shouting in frustration with the errors.. Misspellings. Poorly researched. Painful, but I probably finished if part of a series, with the hopes the author improved. Definitely needed someone to beta read before self-publication.
3 stars = average. I enjoyed reading it. Good plot, likable characters, well-written dialogue, well handled backstory. Nice sentence structure. Grammatical errors, but easily enough fixed in my head. I might talk back (really. Out loud even, but only when it's just me and the book) emphatically correcting the few errors. Might be a bit passive, with more telling than doing. Will read again if part of a series and I need a refresher.
4 stars = good. Enjoyable plot and well rounded characters. Well-written dialogue that moves the plot along. Will move me to laugh or cry (I prefer laughing). Assumes the reader is smart enough to not need explanation. Will probably be re-read.
5 stars = excellent! Definitely on my re-read list, perhaps even one of the books I read at least once a year. I recommend to friends and family, whether they like the genre or not. I might even recommend it to strangers.
Most of my ratings are 2-4. If otherwise, I usually write a review to justify.
